Title: Reccomendations for video cards?
Post by: randyv on July 24, 2009, 02:21:17 pm
Hello -

New to FS2, have a 64-bit Vista PC, about 1 year old.  Going to put FS2 open on it, anyone have a suggestion about a good video card to purchase to optimize the graphics on the game?

Thanks.

That is all.

MAYBE YOU COULD USE THE NVIDIA EVGA GEFORCE GTX 285 SUPERCLOCKED VIDEO CARD. STEALTH SAID IT WAS GOOD FOR CRYSIS AND IF IT CAN RUN CRYSIS IT SHOULD BE ABLE TO RUN FREESPACE.

I'M NOT SURE, MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE COULD GIVE BETTER ADVICE. DON'T LISTEN TO ME IF YOU CAN.

Okay, I killed the capslock in the title.  Cool it, peons. :p

Randyv, what video card (if any) do you have in your machine right now?  Even with all of the MediaVP upgrades enabled, FS2 doesn't exactly require the biggest and baddest card out there.  What you're working with now may be sufficient.

Even a card like the old Radeon 9600 was good enough for everything but normal maps. I'd suggest a GTX275 or something.

I love my GTX 275 with 1.8gb memory but freespace open runs fine on my laptop with ATI X2300 128mb video as well.

8800GTs and 9800GTs are cheap now and should be more than enough for FSO as well as most other games, even the lastest titles are happy on those cards with proper supporting hardware.

The GT250 is also a rebadged 9800GT which is a rebadged 8800GT.

Partially. The newer 98000GT's are manufactured with the newer 55nm technology than the first released 9800GT's which were truly, rebadged 8800GT's.

Actually I hadn't noticed the caps in the title until Snail said something. I was just using allcaps because what I was saying was important.

Uhm, what's with the extra 0?
Isn't it 9800 not 98000?

Don't buy anything now, totally new generation starting at the end of this year. Whatever you buy will be outdated, because of DX11 and Shader 5.0

Dang... I was hoping my 9600XT would be able to do normal mapping, but I kinda had a feeling that it wouldn't.  Well, if I ever get back into actually PLAYING Freespace, then at least I'll know why it isn't displaying normal maps.  Maybe if when I win the lottery I'll replace my current system with a more powerful video card and get some of that sweet normal map coolness.

I've got it figured out. You have the 6/49 in Ontario, right? Take out a 28 000 000$ loan (use your firstborn or sibling or something as collateral) and then when the 6/49 goes over 30 000 000$, buy all 14 000 000 tickets. You'll pull away with at least 2 million.

I don't think that my 15 month old baby girl can fetch me quite THAT credit rating... though she is quite precious.  :)
