Title: Getting Started?
Post by: Fury on July 25, 2009, 01:56:23 pm
It seems like there are two such articles on wiki;
- http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Getting_Started_%28FreeSpace_Open%29

The first link is referenced in the top nav bar in forums and main page, while second is in the Wiki main page. Perhaps someone could take a look at them and tell me which one should be in the nav bar and make sure they're up-to-date.

Thanks. :)

Some time last winter (or fall), I was instructed to write "Getting started" and was informed that it would be linked to the nav bar. Therefore I'd say that it should be linked in the nav bar. Then again, "Getting started FreeSpace Open" seems to have some good stuff in it (with the exception of mentioning Turey's Installer). As I mentioned at #hard-light, someone with more Wiki skills could try to merge the two articles. Or something. My two cents.

You made the mistake of thinking I was anything-competent.

The first page is a general introduction to FreeSpace. The "Getting started" page gives a general outline of the FS games to those who don't know what FreeSpace is. It's referenced here at HLP because, supposedly, if you want to get started, you'll need some general information about the games, the mods, the community, so it's okay if HLP references that.

The wiki main page is also all right. It references "Getting started (FreeSpace Open)" because it's under "FreeSpace Source Code Project", not "Retail FreeSpace" or "The Universe". Take a closer look at the nav bar, and you'll see that it is indeed supposed to direct you to something FreeSpace Open-related.

"Getting started" is actually not referenced within the wiki. "FreeSpace in a nutshell" is its only redirect page, which is again not linked to anywhere within the wiki. I would insert a reference to this page to the wiki main page.

I wouldn't touch the first article ("Getting started") because it serves its purpose very well.  "Getting started (FreeSpace Open)" is currently an index page for *some* SCP-related articles. I would rather merge "Getting started (FreeSpace Open)" with "FSSCP Introduction".

[EDIT]Okay. I made the following edits:
*First of all, I rewrote FSSCP Introduction. The original was an advertisment, not a wiki article.
*I moved FSSCP Introduction to "Source Code Project". This page explains what the SCP is, who are working on that, and what it means for the community.
*All articles that linked to "FSSCP Introduction" were made to link to "Source Code Project"
*I plan to convert "Getting Started (FreeSpace Open) in a list of SCP-related articles. Since the original article was also a list, I think converting the page into an index page would be logical.

First, I need some confirmation whether people like this way of handling the "Getting Started (FreeSpace Open)" page. Second, how would that page be organized? Which articles are worth to include and which ones aren't?

Whatever is linked in the navbar is meant to be a general newbie introduction to HLP and FS and an overview of everything.  It's meant to be the first page a newbie visits.  So it ought to be more general than just FSO.

Okay, I added a link to "Getting started" on the Wiki main page. Will it do?
