Title: Subspace effects in usable skybox?
Post by: Razial on July 27, 2009, 08:03:46 am
Right, this has been aggin' me for a days now. I have looked into every possible way of starting a mission in subspace (subspace mission ticked in bg editor), but there doesn't seem to be anyway of changing skybox if you have that box ticked.

So i was wondering if it would be possible to find the data the default subspace uses (the textures on two rotating tubes) and apply them to a standard skybox (SubSpace_Big.pof for example) as the skyboxes you can use for subspace have the right textures but not the rotating effect. Bearing in mind, i can start a mission in 'subspace' using the change-skybox sexp but it is just the tubular texture, not the rotating effect.

If this is not possible does anyone have any ideas how I may have a mission whose first part is in 'subspace' and then changes-skybox to normal space (or another non subspace skybox)

Thx this has been given me the heeby jeebies the last few days!

So you want to start in subspace, then make it look like you've jumped into normal space?

I haven't done it mysefl but I think that you need to set the skybox to the "subspace vortex" one to have a mission in subspace, the click box for subspace mission does not change the background IIRC, but I can't confirm as I'm not near fred right now.
Check the last mission on FSport, you'll see what they use for that one and you can copy it.

Erm i looked at the FSPort downloads page, but im not sure what to download. Is there one download that contains all the missions, or is it a seperate pack mod or something? Do you have a link for the specific download?

Do you mean the FS1 missions that have been modified using the new open source code? and thus, the last mission being the one with the Shivan Lucifer in subspace? That mission is entirely in subspace isn't it?

I just checked the mission in FRED. It does entirely take place in subspace (its not a skybox, the subspace box is ticked in BG editor). Do you know what VP might contain the details for the subspace effect and what file type and name it might have?

Didn't Transcend use a custom subspace skybox for its penultimate mission?

I'm downloading it now :D  I just wish the vps didn't contain missions lists like sm1-10,mdl1-15,lfu1-10 lol its impossible to get the right mission first time xD

I just went through the last 5 missions in Transcend, in FRED and i dont think any of them have and special subspace sections :) Thanks anyway, im still looking

NO.

You have to play Transcend first. You can't just spoil it!

Haha! Sorry! I couldn't help it! I been lookin for these effects for ages, and I may have.... accidently read some of the mission messages  :nervous: :nervous: :nervous:

It does sound cool and I will play it through, but I am still on a quest to work out how to construct a working subspace skybox!!! :P

Ok slightly off topic.....

I have downloaded it, put it into Freespace2/Transcend, Set the mod in the launcher and set it as a mod in target (which is now '-mod Mods,MediaVPs,Transcend') But i'm not sure how to run this modded campaign? I thought it should work from what I have done, but obviously I have missed something?? Anyone?

Well, from the looks of it, setting a mission to subspace uses both the subspace_big and subspace_small, then rotates them.
You could probably do the same thing if you combine the two POFs into one as separate rotating subsystems...I think...

Did you select it in the campaign room?

And you only have to select the folder as a mod in the launcher - it should have a mod.ini that points to the MVPs.

It hasn't appeared in the campaign room, but I have done the other things. There is a mod.ini config file in the Transcend folder, that folder is set as a mod in the target field, you saw the mod was selected. Erm i'm not sure what else I need to do. Do I need to delete any conflicting mod.ini files in other mod folders if they take presidence?

Tbh actually, in the pic attached, I have another mod folder which contains other vps (that is in the target field etc) but that hasn't worked either (as a mod, the ships come up in fred)

Also would that still be a .pof file, or something different? In either case, any ideas for a program to do that (i dont have much modelling xp)

It is important that you have different mods in separate folders. If multiple vps from different mods (aside from the retail ones) are targeted there will be problems.
Just a heads up, refrain from double-posting; just use the modify button.  :)

Your problem is that you're setting multiple targets in the command line. Just select Transcend as the Mod; the mod.ini will do the rest.
