Hi everyone,
I have been playing FSO 3.6.9 in Mac OS 10.5, and it worked up untill the Iceni spy mission, then froze everytime.
I tried to update to 3.6.10, and it would not work at all. I bought the GOG Windows version of the game, and copied the
3 Data folders to my Mac. Are the folders set up the same way for Mac and Windows? Can someone give me a folder layout
if they're different?
After trying the Mac launcher with no success, I re-did the 3.6.9 version with the new Data folders.
The game runs, but there are no stars or nebula showing, even with detail on high.
Everything else seemed to work.
The Mac launcher gave a 'flag not found' message. When I just started the debug version
of the game, the messages were "unknown command -normal" and "unknown command 3dshockwave"
The debug version showed a 60 fps frame rate in the mission simulator.
Here's my setup: Mac PowerPC G5 tower 1.8 MHz dual processor. Mac OS Leopard 10.5.7.
1 GB RAM. GeForce 6800GT card. Samsung 226BW monitor. Any help is appreciated, as I really want to play this game!!!

Unfortunately - with the release of 3.6.10, 3.6.9 is no longer supported, but we'll try to get you up and running with 3.6.10.
Would you be able to supply the following data for us:
- The fs2_open.log found in data/ for us?
- and the full path to the fs2 directory
It can get picky about the length of the filenames (and sometimes the content, but not always)
Your setup should be fine for playing FSO.
I really want to play this game!!!
We do too (and we also want you to too)! :D

I can't find "fs2_open.log" anywhere on my drive.
The path to the folder (on my 2nd internal HD) is,
/Volumes/My 2nd Drive 232 Gb/

Should be within \FreeSapce2\data.

You need to run a debug build first. I don't know exactly where the mac version puts the log file, but it's called fs2_open.log. Searching for that should work.

Run FSO 3.6.10d (select it in the launcher) and then get the log.

I'm a Mac based developer, here's the overview of my install of FreeSpace 2 Open on my Mac kit. It follows the broad steps here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,60842.0.html).

You'll notice I have a folder inside /Applications/Freespace 2 Open/ called mediavps/. That contains the 3.6.10 MediaVPs (graphical improvements) that can be downloaded here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html).

Thanks for all the advice. Echelon9, I set up my folders like you have. I don't have the "multi-mission-pack.mvp",and "multi-voice-pack.mvp" files, they weren't in the MVPs you suggested I download.

Ok kit, we're making improvements - I think the following two changes should resolve your issues:
- Download the 3.6.10 Final binary release (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,64520.0.html)
- Don't use the normal map (-normal) command line flag, use -no_glsl instead. This can be done in the Launcher, but because of the issues you seem to have there, it can also be done by removing -normal and adding -no_glsl in ~/Library/FS2_Open/data/cmdline_fso.cfg
Normal maps do not yet work correctly on Mac OS X - we've narrowed this down to bugs in the OpenGL implementation Apple ship with OS X. It's a hugely disappointing bug, as the FS2_Open engine works fine on the same hardware if you boot into Windows. A workaround fix may be shipped with 3.6.11, but we really need Apple to update their OpenGL implementation.

Hi again,
Well, I downloaded the version you mentioned. I didn't use an installer, I just copied the two app files
to my FSO folder in applications. I also changed the config file as you mentioned.
It seems to run better, but STILL no stars or nebula in the background, and I think there may have been ships missing
when I ran a regular mission. Am I missing something? The game seems to run, but there is a lot missing!

What mission were you running? Also, is it from the main FreeSpace 2 campaign, or a mod like Blue Planet, Crossing the Styx etc?

Good morning! The mission I started was the Iceni spy mission in the original game,
the mission where the game always froze for me in 3.6.9.
I noticed that there are a bunch of ships around at the beginning usually, but I didn't see any.
I wonder if I have all the files in the right place. Here are 2 screen shots of my folders.
the first one is in the main Applications folder, the second one in the main Library folder.

Also, like was said, remove the TangoA and TangoB files. Have you tried running without the MediaVPs?

Hi,
I removed the Tango A and B files from both locations and moved
the Mediavps folders out, but there was no difference.
Is one of my .VP or .cfg files corrupt or something? I don't know
anything about MD5 sums.

Code tags are nice.
There still seems to be something in /mediavps. Also, there seems to be a problem with ships/weapons/tbl. Try deleting any tables in /data/tables and /mediavps/data/tables.

You should download this (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/Downloads/HotUv1.20Pack.rar) as well. Extract root_fs2.vp from the package, and put it into your FS2 folder.

Hi. Sorry it took me so long to reply. I added the new Root_fs2.vp file and downloaded the MediaVPS again.
Those files I put in the mediavps folder in my Freespace 2 Open folder in Applications.
I looked and did not see any "table" or .tbl files. The Tables folder in Freespace 2 Open/data is empty.
Actually, the only folders inside my Data folder that contain anything are:
freddocs
missions
movies
players
sounds
voice
Is that normal?
Anyway, the game runs, but still without stars, nebula, pretty much everything in space is missing but the HUD and gauges.
Sorry if I started this discussion on the wrong board.
I started getting some answers, so I just continued it.

Wrong files, those should not be there. The movies are all either MVE or OGG files.

Yeah, those are definitely in the wrong place. Delete the data/movies directory.
And download the fs2oggcutscenepack.vp from fsmods (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.128). Put it into your FS2 directory.

Ok, I took those tango and warble files out, and added those .OGG files loose
in my Freespace 2 Open directory in applications.
When running the training simulator, no stars, bkgd, ships appeared,
but it seemed to run like before with the HUD and gauges. When continuing the main campaign, it loaded the HUD and gauges
in space then quit. This is that log...

You misunderstood what cole and I were saying. You had files in your data/movies directory that did not belong there. These files (tango2.vp, tango3.vp and warble_fs2.vp) are NEEDED, but they need to be in your FS directory, and only there.
