The GTB Medusa:

Oh hey, a new one to add to the existing line of Herc 1, Athena, and Orion (?).
That is, if I ever get the patience to make one.
-
Neat. My favorite bomber. Careful with these threads, though. I stated one a while ago with disasterous results...
-Thaeris
-
That's because the site you posted had already been posted several times. This is one he made himself, by the looks of it.
Looks pretty cool.
-
That might be true. I never searched through the board to find an earlier one, I just found them on the web.
In the event of more of these being produced in the future, I feel an epic paper space battle might be in order. Multiple lighters and firecrackers will proudly give their lives in the line of duty upon that day...
-Thaeris
-
That'd be cool.
So'd you just UVMap the original vanilla model?
-
I imported the vanilla model (minus debris and LODs) into Pepakura Designer: http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/ and then unwrapped it. I hadn't registered the program though, so I installed Primo PDF: http://www.primopdf.com/ which creates a false printer that converts anything "printed" to that printer to .pdf and created the file with that.
I suggest you use card for your own models, as paper is too flimsy

Imagine trying to make a destroyer to scale....
-
Making a destroyer to scale is not the problem. Making other things which share scale with the destroyer is...
-Thaeris
-
Like having the Colossus and the Alastor share the same scale.
-
the Medusa is at 1/230 scale, the collossus would be about 23m long at this scale
-
Pinky and the Brain creating a new Earth from Chinese newspaper comes to mind...
-Thaeris
-
the Medusa is at 1/230 scale, the collossus would be about 23m long at this scale
How long would the Icanus, Gigas and Gargant be then?
-
How many kilometers long would the Icanus, Gigas, or Gargant be in actuality? Just scale that with the ratio of the actual length of the Orion (about 2km) and its scale size (about 23m). That should give a pretty good estimate. For example, knowing that the Hades is a little over 3km in length, I bet at 1/230 it would be about 35m in length. Which is an OBSCENE amount of paper. Cross-multiplication is great...
-Thaeris

Just scale that with the ratio of the actual length of the Orion (about 2km) and its scale size (about 23m)
:wtf:
I said collossus...
Besides, it's easy to work out, just open up the model in PCS2, take a look at the bounding box min and max, and then just divide the bounding box size by 230, and boom, there's your answer.
and my original figure for the colly was a typo (meant to write about 26m)/error due to taking it as exactly 6km instead of 6117.462646m, it's actually about 26.6m to scale
-
Hmmm. Sorry about that. I must have been thinking Orion...
-Thaeris
-
So, what ship do you lot want next?
I'm thinking another bomber, or possibly a cruiser...
Any ideas?
-
If you're daring, a Mara or Seraphim. Those would both be devilishly hard to make.
A Deimos shouldnt' be too hard, and it'd look pretty cool. Don't bother making it in scale with the Medusa though.
-
Fenris, Leviathan...
Simple geometry, cool detail.
As far as Shivan ships go, someone did make a Basilisk. I think it was in the same thread as the Orion.

Bumpity bump. Finally got a not-complete-crap camera (though still not far off) so I figured I'd get pics of this up here:
It's about 2 years old now if not more, and so a little dusty and saggy, and is still held to the wall by two 'tempoary' pieces of coathanger wire. :\
Roughly 65cm long, and yes the turret barrels were very fiddly. :p
-
Awesome.
Why did you choose to make a Galatea and not a Bastion?
-
Because the Galatea was the most beloved and iconic ship in all of FreeSpace. Argue all you want, but you're wrong.
-
How long did that beast take to make. Oh and I've got a challenge for anyone who thinks that they are good at this, make a Vasudan ship. :D
-
Where's the papercraft Lucifer destroying it with papercraft SSL's?
-
It took a couple of evenings IIRC. I also built two deimos models before it, but they didn't turn out nearly as well since they were printed on an injet printer rather than a laserjet, and the shape of the deimos makes them rather weak around the rear engine without any internal support. :\
As for the lucifer to destroy it, well I would, but I never liked the in-game lucifer model - only the cutscene model. That's why I built the HTL version in the first place, but I stand no chance of making a paper HTL lucifer. :p
-
Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I was trying to download your great looking Medusa model to build for myself, and Mediafire seems to have deleted the file.
Also, anyone with any other models, even if you think they need modification, etc. I'd love to have them anyway, I've actually got my own website dedicated to models now, have designed a good few, and would be interested in seeing what I can make of what you have.
-
This doesn't look look like a paper model, but I feel that it is worth pointing out this (http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7704) rather spiffing piece of work that Shiv produced.
EDIT: Mea culpa, that was not actually produced by Shiv. Sorry :nervous:

Epic Fake-atude
-
Well if it is then I'm a major tool.
Edit: Yes, those small round things surrounding the base on the table make me suspect it's a CGI.
Anyway...

Have you come across this website yet? Paper models of the Athena and Hercules therein. http://paperinside.com/pericles/freespace/ (http://paperinside.com/pericles/freespace/)
-
So that Hecate is a fake? Pretty impressive hoax photos. Now someone should make an actual model.
-
It's pretty much stated in the thread that it is. Really, look at the stand... It's... just not believable.
-
Nicely done though, with real background.
Plus can you imagine how hard it would be to make a Hecate, you would be there for months. :D

Yeah, I have Pericles' Freespace models already. I also have a model of Lt. Ash's Apollo, and the Orion model that was posted on this forum quite some time ago. I'm just trying to get my hands on more. The Medusa would be great, and so would a Basilisk that was posted in the old Orion thread.

I figured it was some spoiled rich kid whose parents owned a 3d printer or something.
-
Even then you'd have to paint it... That definately doesn't look like a normally attainable paintjob.
-
One of the advantages of paper models is that you print the skin when you print the parts. I'd say a model like that would take...maybe a week to build, if I wanted to be extra meticulous about it.

Well, I'll try and find it and upload it to a more permanent host.
Here you go: Medusa (http://www.game-warden.com/earthdefence/staff_files/qazwsx_ani/medusa.pdf)

Awesome! Thank you a whole bunch!
For those of us interested in getting more, how easy is it to use the model from the game in Pepakura? Care to walk me through it?
-
Pretty easy, just extract the model and relevant files, then convert the textures to .jpg and the model to .obj
-
What do you convert the models and textures with?
-
textures with irfanview, model with PCS2 (to .cob) then to .obj using accutrans 3D, I removed LODs and other crap like that in accutrans 3d
-
Hello, i´ve seen the superb papermodel of the Galatea from Vasudan Admiral. Can someone post me a link where i can download the files of this model ? Please forgive me my bad english, greetings from Germany -Karadoc

Keep in mind though that this isn't a terribly model-maker friendly version. I unwrapped it in the way that made logical sense to me at the time, but looking at it now I'm like 'waaaahhhh???' :p
-
To be honest, I hope to scratch build an Orion out of pla-plate and spare Gundam parts.
-
Seems Lucy's far too complicated for a beginner, eh?
Not like the Ory which is a large boxy blue warship.
-
Actually, to SB either one is a daunting task. I doubt you can easily understand the scale of scratchbuilding necessary here.
