I would like to inform those that don't already know, that FreeSpace Close-Quarters, a FPS (First Person Shooter) has come to be at Game-Warden. :)
You take the roll as a GTA marine during the first Great War. You get to do the usual, escort missions and such, but you mainly have the privileged of attacking and fending off rebel Terran attacks and Vasudan attacks. You may even get to see a Shivan or two. ;7
FS-CQ will be made on the HL2 (Half Life 2) engine, which IMO is one of the best FPS engines out there right now.
If you have any questions, here is the link to the forum:

You can also ask questions here, but they may not be answered right away.

I am following this. Intently.
-
This'll be interesting, so long as you don't turn it into some kind of comical multiplayer fragfest like 1.6 (thought it has it's place), this'll be good :).
-
What'd make me squeal in fangirl-esque glee is if you made it some kind of ultra-tactical Republic Commando type game.
-

That won't be happening. I'm still not sure if multilayer is going to happen at all.
-
Well fragfest was what I was really worried about. :P
-
i loved republic commando. I played the demo OVER and OVER and OVER. Never got the full game tho.
Will you need to own HL2 to play this?
-
First republic commando was a great game.
Edit: Second I have been hoping something like FS: CQ would happen for years now.
-
This is off-topic... though it does relate to ground combat...
Has anyone considered using DropTeam as a mod platform for FreeSpace?
Battlefront.com, DropTeam page: http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=92&Itemid=137
The game is basically designed to be modded, is by nature multi-platform, etc. It uses an advanced physics engine (despite its looks) and is multiplayer. There is a demo, too. I believe the demo is open enough that it itself can be altered. It also lets you just drop .obj or .3ds files into it with the appropriate flies to go with the model. It will also take straight-up .cob files, meaning existing models for FreeSpace could potentially be used without much conversion.

Yes you will need HL2 to play this.
A quick update: Currently playing around and learning Hammer, getting familiar with it's interface etc. The screenshots below could possibly be part of a tutorial mission due to it's simplicity. :)
And finally, here are the screenies. :)

Not very FreeSpacey. But it's a good start.
-
You mean the weapons, the fence in the frikin' middle of nowhere (I felt like putting there for fun) or everything together?
-
Looks good enough to me :).
-
As long as you get the characters (ie. Terran Marine, Vasudan, Shivan) to look right, I think it'll be fine.
-
Do the soldiers in the bottom picture look anything like marines? Opinions?
-
My opinion is that this pic is too small to clearly see anything.
Though the mod looks promising.
-
Here are some pictures of the various people that you can attack in HL2, so some of them may be used. Any of them look like marines/guards or soldiers that you would see on a Terran ship?
Picture1: Police officer/civilian enforcer.
Picture2: Nova soldiers (or something like that.)
Picture3: Combine soldiers (the ones in my last screenshot.)

Those don't look anything like the marines we saw in Hallfight.
The attached file has what they should look like.

Snail has a point but i think the blue combine soldiers with "hard material" look Armour materials would make a better all purpose space marine
-
As much as the combine soldiers don't look like the GTA marines from hallfight, could the look still be pulled off? IMHO, there isn't a huge difference between the combine soldier and the hallfight soldiers. Also, there may be other GTA marine outfits that we never see. I'm sure that the ones from the hallfight couldn't be the only ones.
-
Maybe they can be used for security forces or regular ground soliders (in Hallfight we have seen space marines).
-
I'm thinking perhaps a reskin of the white ones with a different head.

This one? All you would have to do is change it's mask (I think.) Not sure how to do that yet though. :)

What about a Vasudan Marine? I assume he/she might look like a more heavily-armored pilot, maybe?
-Thaeris
-
I think the HL2 guys could work if their helmets were different.
-
What about a Vasudan Marine? I assume he/she might look like a more heavily-armored pilot, maybe?
Possibly. I'm not sure yet. Would a Vasudan wear battle armor, or would they go around fighting like they normally look?
-
Snail, where the ginger funk did you get that image from????

You don't go into battle naked... unless you're Celtic. In which case, you get to paint yourself blue :D !
I assume Vasudans are pretty tough (as demonstrated by the "Terran pilot vs. Vasudan" clip), but they still need to carry equipment. Not to mention also that bullets/lasers/large balls of plasma/etc. are often sharp, fast, or volatile (explosive)... Sorry for the pointed joke, but I'd imagine that Vasudan troops would indeed wear such protection  .

Not sure actually. It's from Volition. Might be one of the extras from the defunct Descent-Network site.

I guess a few unarmored Vasudans would be walking around if they were caught by surprise, but if they're marines I'm pretty sure they'd have armor of some kind.
-
Any clue to what kind of armor? I never saw them wearing any in the .ani files or in the FS2 cutscenes (need to go through the FS1 ones now I guess.)
-
That's because we've never seen any Vasudan marines.
I imagine it might be similar to their flightsuits. See the "Command Briefing" cutscene from FreeSpace 1. There are a few Vasudans in the background
-
Thanks. I assume this is the correct one... cool armor, or whatever you want to call it. :D

That's the stuff! (now where the heck is the cream filling?)
Now if it's just "beefed up" a little with some additional plates, etc., you should have a nasty surprise in store for those foolish GTA Roughnecks. If plates are an option, I'm almost thinking that they might be similar in appearance to the Horus' external plating... at least the HTL Horus. Perhaps it's time to whip out the sketch pad...

Perhaps it's time to whip out the sketch pad...
Na. I can't draw to save my life. If you want to sketch something out though, go right ahead. :)

I'd be more than happy to give it a stab, but I'm not terribly good at doing things that look both freeform and hi-tech. But heck, I never will be if I never try, so what the hell. I'll start by adapting WH40k Eldar armor to Vasudan physiology (minus the absurd helmets) and go from there. Hell, the Wraithlords already have the same basic shape.
I don't like the idea of Vasudans wearing super-clunky armor. We'll see where this goes.

-
Go right ahead. Hoping to see the outcome soon.
-
Since this is the Great War... (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2c/FS_Concept_Art.jpg)
That Vasudan could work... Probably better for a pilot than a marine, but blah.
-
Still, thanks for the art. All I would have to do is beef up the armor on the Vasudan and it may work as a Marine...
-
Give it some pwetty cowours. :)
-
Desert camo no longer required. Lol.
-
Hmm. I believe Krallis was in the process of making an FS-themed mod for Unreal III. He posted a few shots of the marine he was making last November. I'd provide a link to the thread, but the pics are no longer there.
Edit: They were shots of a Terran marine. I think he might even have modelled a weapon or two but I'm not totally sure.
-
Thanks. Maybe I'll send him a PM and see what he's done. Not sure if it will get through to him though. He hasn't been around since mid March. Anyhow, thanks. :)
-
better have coop also!

Multiplayer co-op? We'll see...

Ugh, this may take longer than expected. For some bizarre reason, Vasudan anatomy - especially the legs - is giving me a nightmare of a time. Seriously, they're built like an ATST on crack...

now i think i understand why there is so few scenes showing moving Vasudans
-
You might want to have a look at the Protoss from Starcraft II as well. They and the Vasudans have a lot of similarities.
I do have a moderately detailed Vasudan head here, as well as a body in progress, and some other odds and ends. There's a lot here and I think it should help you.
Clicky goodness! (http://freespaceport.googlepages.com/Vasudan.zip)

Thanks. I probably won't be able to get much done on this until at least Thursday, things have suddenly gotten quite zany for me at the moment -_-

Like I said, no rush whatsoever. :)

I don't assume that you have any updates on that Vasudan, do you? :p
-
Should I look for The Orange Box or just Half Life 2?
-
If you're looking the play HL2? The Orange Box, definitely.
-

Depends. If you want to play the game for fun (just Half life 2) then the Orange box would be great, since it comes with a lot of other great games. But if you wanted to know for this mod (if it gets released :p) then just standard HL2 would work. Ofcourse, your more than welcome to help if you want. :)
-
What kind of game is The Orange Box? Is it gorey? :headz: Like this?
-
It's a HL2 Compilation with Portal and TF2.
-

Yes. TF1 also, right??? Basically, it's a collection of the newer games by Valve. And yes, some of them are bloody in places (but most FPS are now days.)
-
There are vasudans in pilot gear in the Taranis briefing cutscene...

Yes there are. Going from that picture to a different engine and getting it to actually work is easier said than done though.
