Title: joystick settings for up/down and left/right thrust
Post by: feldmaus on August 04, 2009, 04:40:33 pm
Hi All,

i got this Game to work. Nice:-). My System is Debian Lenny 32bit with kernel 2.6.30 and a Nvidia 8600GT.

I tried inGame to set up my joystick(xbox controller). My controller has many axis, therefor i want to connect the up/down thrust and left/right thrust to one of the axis, but it seems that it can not assigned to an axis, only to a button. Is that correct ? Is there a workaround ?

regards Markus

Up/down thrust and left/right thrust don't do anything in FreeSpace anyway. You won't need to worry about them unless you're playing Beyond the Red Line, Diaspora, or The Babylon Project.

There are still other features i want assign to one of my axis, but how to do this ?
Or can i only assign some of this features to buttons and not to axis ?

regards Markus

This, pretty much.  As far as I know, the only functions which support axis assignments are yaw (turn), pitch, bank (roll), and throttle.

The xboy controller has 8 axis and 10 buttons, so it would be nice to get all important features to work. Maybe somebody have got an idea ?

FS2_Open control scheme currently only allows you to bind five analog axes:

Pitch
Roll
Yaw
Absolute throttle
Relative throttle

...and the rest of the controls are all digital; only keypresses can be bound to them. Control, Alt and Shift keys are at your disposal to increase amount of key combinations, though.

Personally, when playing something that allows glide and lateral/vertical thrusters (Beyond the Red Line, some ships in The Babylon Project), I usually bind W as afterburner, S as rear thruster, A as left lateral thruster and D as right lateral thruster. If I don't have joystick or I choose to use mouse for greater accuracy, I might have Q and E bound to roll.

And yes, I sacrifice up and down thrust for better forward/backward control. If I had a HOTAS throttle, I would definitely bind up, down, left and right to a hat switch on the throttle, along with buttons for afterburner and rear thrust at other finger tips.

On FS2, I have a similar set-up except A and D control roll when I'm not using joystick.

I am using the xpad driver, i read something about the userspace driver xboxdrv, which seems to be more configurable.
