Something I made the other day.
I'm thinking about making three versions. Carrier, Destroyer and Battleship. Kinda like what they've done in Reciprocity(sp?).
The Hull will have to have minor changes made, of course, but here's the basic design.
Fire away!

Looks like it'd be best as a Carrier
nice design :)
-
Yeah, looks like a carrier. Reminds me of the Homeworld mothership.
-
Me likes. Reminds me of the GTD Warhammer. :)

Warhammer?
-
wow, i think here is a long list of fan made ships, we shoud have a fan made ship name list database, so ppl can fin any available name, that way we can't have 2 diferent ship with the same name
-
Looks very good. And I think a Carrier would be the best choice here.:D

Thought the same thing... the front of the model, specially.
And Ryx, how come you don't know the Warhammer (http://terra.sourceforge.net/featured/fp-large003.jpg)?!? :D

My MT knowledge is rusty. When Setekh commented on the similarity between the two, I searched the forums for more info. Didn't really find any.
Don't suppose you have a clearer pic?
-
Hm, not right here. Lemme see if I can find one...

Eh?
-
Without the top bumps it could easily be the deck to a modern aircraft carrier. It should definitely be a carrier!
Asking this question for Hanger Man: Will it have hangers that you can fly into? :D
Nice model.

It wouldn't be too hard to throw something like this together with some PHP, an Apache webserver and PostgreSQL on the backend. I think this is an excellent idea.

Give me a server with Tomcat and any database, and you have that in five minutes. ;)

The fact that Segomo and Rosmerta were described as sister-classes, for me (somehow), translated into the same basic hull design with variations for their respective role.
Perhaps I'm wrong? :o

Which one is Tomcat? I have to admit, when it comes to non-IIS web serving, I don't know much beyond keeping the machines alive and well.
-
Tomcat, the Java Servlet Container/JSP Space from the Jakarta Project, which is in turn part of the Apache project.
-
*heh* See I could do the same thing on an IIS/2k box in about 5 minutes, but I wouldn't respect myself in the morning. ;)
That's not true. Right now my own website runs on IIS4/NT4 (though, hopefully not much longer. I should be moving to an apache server on FreeBSD sometime soon).
-
Tomcat can be used as a web server too, though it needs Apache if you're working with large server loads. And it's damn easy to install - unpack everything, adjust a couple of environment settings, maybe edit one XML file, and run the startup sequence. VoilĂ . :)

*Looks at the picture* Seems a bit flat to me, but it does look more durable rather than artsy...I'd like to see it textured

Patience(sp?)
It was going to resemble an Orion to begin with, but it didn't turn out that way.
Right now it is about the size of an Orion (lenght wise).
Should I make it bigger?
-
no

well, they're not really similar atall..... just the same rough tech level, and intended to complement each other

Anyway, it's a nice ship, but I think it needs abit of variation in the shape and the surfaces...even just a few recessed areas, create a bit of contrast.
Depnds what the polycount is, though, and you also have scope for big turrets, or destroyable subsystems on the flat ares (depending on ship size & relative scale)

Polycounts at 230

Plebnty of room them :). If you don't want to alter the basic structure, then just add more fine, inset details.
Or you could stick at your current polycount and add a lot of destroyable deck objects, like radar dishes, storage pods, turrets(obviously), or even large areas of geometry, like a bridge tower :)
-
I'll play around with it and see what happens. ;)

Here's an idea.....
coat the surface (where appropriate) with low-poly models, even plain boxes, with very low hitpoints. That way, you can strafe them, and wath them blow to bits with every run ;) ;7
Of course, you have to take into account the unfeasible number of subsystems required - that would all be targetable.... :devilidea:
-
Looks like a carrier to me.
-
Reminds me of the PVFr Satis. I like it.
-
Hehe, it looks like a frigate 2 me :p . BTW the textured looks like carrier for me :p

It isn't textured. I did apply a map so it would look better, that's all.
-
OK, played with it and it didn't turn out to bad. I'm still not happy with it, but generally ok.

hmmm.... yes.
-
You could give it a hanger that you can land inside.
-
Just in case the hangars aren't visible enough.

It has my STAMP of approval :D

I was thinking it looked more like a freighter to me

No Here's a freighter (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,6249.0.html), though. Need to redesign the cargo/container thing. :sigh:
-
Thats big.
-
yeah, i would make it much smaller I think, as broad as the orion, rather than as long.
-

 It's too flat for a destroyer, methinks. The detail is just right for a good, largish cruiser.
-
Make it truly immense and have it as the GTVA mobile command.
-
in that little joint where the deck thing attaches to the hull, give it four huge guns, think BFRed...except for terrans...mebby BGreens would be enough...

Is it not possible to make a subobject nonselectable?

It is a bit large perhaps, but making it as wide as an Orion is a bit too small. Large hangars, you know. ;)

When I was altering it, yesterday, the profile reminded me of a duck. :D
It still looks a little like one, but not nearly as bad.
More tweakage will follow. ;)

This looks even better with textures!!!:jaw: :jaw: :jaw:

the tiling is terrible, sory to say. use a map that doesn't have some dark stuff that will make your ship look like a zebra ;)

I'll work on it. And yes, the tilings an issue.
-
lets us know when it is converted some of us might like to use it.
-
Sadly, I can't convert. :(
If you want it, tell me, and I'll send you the texes + a few versions of the model, that might work as suitable LODS (in .3ds format).
-
Convert? From what-to-what?
-
.3ds to .cob is no problem. (3DE)
It's really all the trueSpace-stuff. I open up trueSpace (now uninstalled) and I try to do stuff, but I can't find s*** in ts. Subsequently, my patience only lasts for a few a minutes.
