I'm making this poll for research purposes so please answer accurately.
Basically, I'm thinking about doing some cutscenes and I would prefer to optimise them for the most regularly used setting.
Subtitle text in cutscenes does not seem to be centre-able, rather one just has to eyeball it after trial and error in Fred. However as far as I know this will change for different resolutions.
Though images are centreable and if everyone plays at 1280x1024 it might be worthwhile just to create text images since it seems they can be centred onscreen. (at that resolution the default text is so bloody small)

I'm just going by what's available in the launcher options. Does your launcher allow 1680x1050??? I had assumed they were all the same but maybe it depends on one's monitor and video card.

Yes, the launcher detects available screen resolutions and displays those fs2_open supports. Which are at least 4:3 and 16:9 resolutions.

Bah.
So . . . likely it will be almost impossible to centre text in the middle of the screen for a cutscene. Erg. Ideally text should be centreable and then be able to offset from that centrepoint. That way text could be placed in relation to the centre of the screen, regardless of resolution rather than basing it from the top left of the screen. Though of course both could be useful depending upon what the FREDder intends.
Well I'll leave it a few days, hopefully a trend emerges.

Was playing 1600x1200 on my 19" CRT monitor, but as that is now dying, (suspicious pops and cracks from the rear) I have obtained a 14" LCD screen which only allows resolutions of up to 1024x768. :ick:

Fields 7 and 8 in the show-subtitle SEXP center it in the screen. Maybe you could try that and see if it works?

I have a 4:3 screen and a 16:9 screen in a dual set up. I switched the primary monitor around once and the launcher instantly gave me different resolutions to pick from.

I'm using 1024x768, my display is capable of 1680x1050, but I rarely used it recently, mostly because of immense number of textures on Steve'o's ships.
1680x1050 is the mode I'm using for normal playing, not mod development. (don't worry about WiH final, it will be optimized, it's just not done jet)

2048x1536. FS2 is a game that greatly benefits from high pixel densities, due to the long viewing distances.
As for the cutscene subtitles, they did not scale at all with the resolution when I last tried them. The text looked microscopic and the positions were off. Unless something has changed, I suggest avoiding them altogether and using training messages instead.

Well no worries. I just did my opening credit subtitles so that's 30 lines of text that should look decent on 1280 and a bit off centre on anything higher or lower.

Same here, 1024x768. I've got an 8 year old 15 inch CRT monitor, and a ~3 year old graphics card, a lowly Geforce 7600 GT. The monitor itself actually goes up to 1280x1024, but that limits the refresh rate to an eye-strainingly-slow 60 Hz (it's more likely that the flickering at 60Hz is my monitor's problem, since 60Hz is actually pretty normal for a refresh rate), and everything's too small anyway at that resolution on a 15 inch.

Because people don't understand ratios? I use 1280x960 too, because that's a 4:3 pixel ratio and my screen's physical width to height ratio is also 4:3. I don't get why we have 1280x1024 as a native resolution so much... :nervous:

Refresh rate of 60Hz will look like **** on any CRT

1280x1024 does look like garbage on a 4:3 CRT, but some of the 1280x1024 users here probably have 17-19" LCDs for which that resolution is in fact correct.
That resolution has become common over 1280x960 because it was at one time the largest resolution that could fit into the 1MB framebuffers on video cards. :p

If the text size doesn't scale, the text would still be unreadable on monitors with high pixel densities. It has been a while since I last tried out any subtitles though.

show-subtitle seems to accept all 12 arguments without a problem for me. From the current code it looks like it would be fairly straightforward to change it to use relative coordinates.

Not sure with mine, right now it's 1680*1050 (1440*900 in windowed mode I think) but my main computer which isn't running at the moment uses 1280*1024.
