Ultra high-speed rendering engine, this image constructed from approximately 400,000,000 particles. Standalone proprietary renderer and instruction language, coded in c++. Image rendered on SGI. This is a still from an animated sequence.

I just think XSI has the best suited architecture to implementing something like this into an existing animation package.
As for free...theres always the demo..or..umm...contacts.
