I have made a bunch of ships over a long period of time and have been making several missions that I hoped make into a campaign but now my textures are starting to go haywire. random textures will just not show up in the mission or show up as black. WTF is that about? Once the testures stop working, that's it, I cannot get them to work again. One of the things I have seen is that if say, a wing stops showing up in the mission if I remake the texture it will still not work on the wing, if I rename the texture it will not work, however if I put a different old texture in for the wing it will work. I am using dds textures, but of course if I use the TGA they still won't work.
Any ideas out there? I am a desperate man right now

Wait are you using texture replacement in FRED? If so that is currently broke for ships with shine and/or glow maps. Best bet in this case is to fix it in the mission in notepad.

However, if you need to have ships with diff textures, try the "change ship class" command under (models & textures).
This is a workaround, but if you make the separate entry for each ship you can change it's textures in fred just fine...
Hope that helps you out?
:D

I am not using texture replacement and the ships with different textures are different ships types.
One of the weird things is that the ship looks perfect in PCS which is getting the textures from Data/Maps but in Fred and Freespace the ship has not wings. Even in Fred in the wire frame mode the wings don't show up. I guess there could be something in the geometry - but it use to work fine...
I just thought of one thing and will give it a try.

nope didn't work. One thing I did see is if I look in the texture replacement window the 2 textures that are missing are not in the "old Textures". I know they are in the maps directory and I know that they work in PCS2 but they won't show up in fred or FS and they are not even seen in the texture replacement window. Is there a limit on the number of textures allowed? Am I screwing up in the naming convention?
I am really boggled on this one...

are they power of 2? texture dimentions for dds should be power of 2.

How about zipping up the models/textures?
Seeing something firsthand is often better than a description.

I figure out the problem. It looks like you can only have a maximum of 7 textures per object, including shine and glow maps. You may ask why in the hell did you have so many textures? Because I don't know what I am doing, and I am learning from my mistakes.
Actually, if I am learning from my mistakes I should be a freaking genius by now
This forum has again been invaluable because I never would have figured it out if I didn't look in the texture replacement area of fred, which I got from here.
Thanks.
