Title: Noob Question
Post by: cw4rotorhead on August 14, 2009, 09:14:18 am
OK here goes another stupid question.
I only have the "Virgin" FS2 from GOG with no mods or anything else. What exactly do I need to download to get the most single player campaigns. I am also going to need FSO so is that included with the installer? Sorry for being a dunce but there seem so many files avail I just don't know which ones to get.
Thanks to all

Hit 'FreeSpace Open Installer' in the top bar.

Go to the Blue Planet Forum, download BP 3.6.10.

That should cover the big ones for now - Transcend, Derelict, Blue Planet, Windmills, The Procyon Insurgency.

I'm not entirely sure Hip's installer has, for example, the up-to-date MVPs, which I believe Turey's does.

So I'd go with the installer on the top bar up there.

OK
Looking at hip63's installer package he says it has everything Turey's does.

Again Thank you Sir for your reply and help. I am moving to Costa Rica next month and will only have dial up sloooow internet which is why I am trying to download everything and get it installed before I move.

Thanks again

Hip's installer is static, it downloads a specific pack until updated which requires a patch or new pack, Turey's installs by downloading fom the internet, it can be told to change its download targets easily, and it is maintained by the SCP.

And Hip's doesn't have the latest MediaVPs.

Wrong.

OK the Off-Line Installer  has been updated with the lastest 3.6.10 Media VP Files and includes the "Clash of the Titans II" Mission Hot-Fix.

hip63 :p

In the process of installing Turey's installer. Do I need to do hip63's also? And then option 2 from hip63 to install the campaigns?
Thanks

No. Turey's installer is separate from hip's DVDs. You don't need one to use the other.

You will need to grab Blue Planet separately, however. I believe it's temporarily not in the installer due to some kinda issue thing (holding off for the voice acted version?)

Now I am really confused... Hip's installer (option 1) is basically the same as Turey's except it is an offline version correct??
Hip63's option 2 is just the extra campaigns correct?
If I use the installer I am using now - Turey's - I do not need hip63's offline installer unless it has different campaigns and other features, correct???

Please explain.... Thanks

That is correct. Except that Turey's doesn't currently download Blue Planet.

Otherwise you're fine.

And if you don't play Blue Planet then you'll miss out on a very good campaign. :D

Turey's = FreeSpace 2 Open, MVPs, A few campaigns. Needs constant connection while installing.

Hip's = FSO, MVPs, MANY campaigns. No connection needed once downloaded.

After using Turey's Installer, it is a simple matter of manually downloading other not-so-popular user made campaigns from the Wiki database.
Hip's Installer is better as a full FS/O backup in the case that you change computers or data is lost.

Alternatively, go bump your head around FreeSpaceMods.net, if you're bold enough. :p
