That engine is sexy as hell...

Why would they not go with it?

Looks extremely interesting...

Then again game companies barely even know what's good anymore. =/

Because Nexus was a marvelous pile of horse dung.

Nexus 1 was incomplete, a great game, but limited in certain ways, it's a pity 2 never got made.

Edit: Ironic that video was made a considerable amount of time before BSG and yet definitely has an atmosphere that reminds me of it.

Maybe because it has giant spaceships sitting there duking it out while tiny fighters fly around them?

Well, that is hardly a new event, to be honest B5 was doing that years ago, but it doesn't feel like B5 to watch.

I'd say it's more along the lines of both the video techniques used and the atmosphere projected.

The companies still going isn't it? What i mean is, no chance of the engine being open source at all? :nervous:

a great game AND to me, not incomplete at all. Multiplayer wasn't good but WHO CARES? Story was good, it demanded tactic and it was and still is awesome, not to mention good looking. It's not a pity the sequel never got made, it's a crime against humanity!

a crime against humanity!

So's turducken. ;7

Nexus 2's teaser is plain sexy.

It is a great game, I'll agree, but even the people who released it said that they would have liked to do a lot more with it, including editable fields of engagement, improved Multiplayer and various other improvements. The game as released was excellent, but time limits took their toll on it.

Kind of like Hostile Waters, I have no complaints whatsoever about the game, but the original intent was to have a much larger game, there's even rumors that a Multiplayer patch for it exists, but was never released.

Edit: More than rumour...

it was a great game.

The BSG mod was pretty good too.

Very difficult though, basestars were nearly impossible to kill.

I've got the Stargate one and one of the star-trek ones. But the skirmish-maker gets boring after a while.

or can we . . .

We could with a working post process system. The problem is (once again) getting the depth sorting right when doing the distortion.

Cool, one of my favourite game trailers of all time, I just keep coming back to it once in a while.

I really like the way the combat scene plays out... the fighter shooting at a target behind it made me go "whoa" and "WTF" at the same time though... that is some high-tech off-boresight lock-on?

And the use of beams, pulsed beams, those energy bombs and missiles/torpedoes too... Really half-FS (beam) and half-(whatever sci-fi universe uses missiles and torps as heavy weapons as opposed to beams) in my opinion. (I quietly yearn for a time when FSO can have weapons like that XD)

Then there's the fighters shooting each other down with machinegun pulse lasers... I like!!! Compare that to the game where it's all just flickering beams... it felt very "meh"... :doubt:

The only thing I couldn't get used to in both the first game and the trailer is the music with that voice... like something out of a horror film, (as in truly scary and not those cheesy flicks) but it really captures the mood of space I guess...

What do you mean 'quietly yearn for a time'? Missile and torps are very practical heavy weapons in FSO right now.

Um, well, you could take off the bomb flag, or you could just give them a lot of hitpoints.

Easy fix.

Warship torpedoes are ****ing awesome.

I'm aware of this, I'm stating what just about everyone else of the entire community says about ship-to-ship warheads. :doubt:

Ship-to-ship missiles are slower than beams and can be shot down.  I don't mind them being able to be shot down, its just that beams are faster and slow-moving vampires aren't very cool.  Plus beams are well, massive glowy beams o' doom.  If anti-capital missiles in FSO were faster and had epic missile trails like in the Nexus vid, they would be much more visually appealing.

Been done as early as INFR1.

Vampire is the name for an anti-ship missile.

Taken out of context, I find it rather amusing.

Where is this said anti-ship missile from?

What do you mean 'quietly yearn for a time'? Missile and torps are very practical heavy weapons in FSO right now.

I kinda meant some of the other weapons, like the blue and red pulsed beams (you can kinda do this in FSO but to me it'll just be a long exhaust trail "mysteriously attached" to a normal projectile rather than a true "trail pulse beam" as I would call it... with the full length causing damage), the energy bomb (they tend to fly at an arc rather than straight... cool) and the yellow beam that bends... (fighter pilot: WHOA SH**)

The machine gun lasers... well I tried tabling them but it just doesn't feel right in FS. Could be just me.

Probably just me but somehow the heavy missiles/torpedoes just feel different in the trailer than in FSO... oh well. Then again in the game the fighters shoot them down so easily... meh... not too different from FS in the practical sense I guess. One-hit kill was cool... BOOOOM :wtf:

The first time I played nexus I didn't know :wtf: I was doing and fired off a missile then suddenly the alarm went off because the missile just killed something only a few km away and I almost totaled my own hull LOL

There goes the epic drama XD

It's not the name for a particular missile, it's just the brevity callsign for an ASM in naval/air force jargon.

"Vampires forty, distance twenty klicks" or whatever.
Title: Re: NEXUS 2, when was it cancelled ?
Post by: asyikarea51 on September 05, 2009, 11:02:13 pm
Arghhh... Still can't get over how the trailer uses beams and missiles with equally nice pyrotechnics...

That's it, I'm gonna go watch it again.

Oh those Vampires.
Naval/air force jargon translates into space combat?

But yes, that trailer is nice.
Ice cube shield a bit strange though.

I don't think hitpoints is the issue. I remember asking about this and I recall that bombs were destroyed by being hit not reduced to zero hit points or below.

I know for Renegade Legion mod, har har, if that ever gets anywhere, I want to make some ship to ship missiles that would have hitpoints more akin to a suicide fighter than a bomb. But I'm not sure if that's possible under FSO at the moment.
Title: Re: NEXUS 2, when was it cancelled ?
Post by: General Battuta on September 05, 2009, 11:35:27 pm
You are correct and incorrect. Bombs were (and still are by default) destroyed by being hit, but bomb hitpoints have been introduced in 3.6.11.

Even so, War in Heaven had some quite nice ship-to-ship salvoes before missile hitpoints were introduced; it can be done. But if you want big, honking, solo torpedoes, then you need hitpoints.

Nexus 2 would have been made if Nexus 1 would have made a bit more money. It isn't incomplete you can play all the way through the game. And there are some nice mods for it to especially that Star Trek mod.

While Nexus is quite playable, there are many parts of the game that were obviously left unfinished - skill points being one of them.

Too bad, really, because it's a great game.

Stupid skill points and stupid paying points to buy items then remove them, AND NOT keep it :(

I think there's an 'undo' button on that screen somewhere. I just found it tonight.

I meant an inventory. Like each thing you buy could go in a store to be used and kept for free when unequipped.

Yeah that part of Nexus was a bit suck.
Title: Re: NEXUS 2, when was it cancelled ?
Post by: Vidmaster on September 18, 2009, 10:40:53 am
nah, actually not. Because it was not money, it was work time. Depending on your current location and the status of whatever location, they had more or less time for your fleet. You don't buy, you order the support guys to equip your ships. Also, there was no almighty shop, you had to work with they had in the supply chambers and the nano-technology of the Anglewing (if you install any item in the Angelwing at least once, the ship's systems can recreate that item and there is always at least one of it in the cargo hold).
During missions were you were on your own, there was no reequiping.
I really liked the system.
And yeah, there is the undo button. Also, you can just load your game.

You know, I think I am going to replay it again. Once again. Hell, how many times do I have replayed that brilliant game already?

I'm doing it right now, and really enjoying it.

I found the registry hack to let you run it at widescreen resolutions, and although the briefing text usually shows up offscreen, everything else is fine.

Just got out of the Earth-Noah wormhole and I'm adapting to the new tactics. Made the mistake of taking lasers for a little, but it's pretty clear e-shell/railgun combos are the way to go right now.

correct. I hope you choose at least the second difficuty setting (and patched the game before).
The easy setting is a joke, no tactics needed.

I've only played through it the once, either on Easy or the next one up, and I got my ass handed to me in more than a few missions until I started thinking things through.  The second to last mission and those ****ing missile battleships in particular... argh.  I want to know how their missions made it through the fighters and best flak systems every single time, and mine didn't so much as scratch them.  I finally had to resort to dual siege lasers to knock them out and then concentrate on the Gorg.

At any rate, while some missions are a little too easy, the rest are a reasonable challenge even on easy.

yeah, the second to last mission, the big final fleet battle above Earth before you *spoiler*...     ...wonderful.

Experienced is the second setting and should be the default one. After one runthrough, you should only play professional. To be honest, it doesn't change much or makes the game more difficult, the main change is the amount of points to upgrade.
