I was playing about with one of Narol's fighters the other night (the Kali) and it got me working on a Shivan design. It was based loosely on his Kali, but ended up looking more like, as he pointed out, and advanced Manticore. Here's a little panaround AVI (380k). Check it, out let me know what you think. I'll post static views later tonight when I get home.

Cool.
-
Not bad at all, although the animation is a bit fast. ;)
-
Fooking sweet model
-
As promised, static images. I'm calling the silly thing the 'Naga'. Its just under 400 polys, not intersects, no booleans. It works well as a COB too. Completely solid and everything. I'm very well pleased.

two thumbs up :)
now go and map it :D ( hey, Mike, why do you look at me that way? please! don't hurt me :D )
-
-
Textured that thing would rock. Try the Astaroth maps, I think they'd look good. Keep some of that intense red, though.
Seems suited to nebular environments. I can't really see any gunpoints; how many and where?
-
Gunpoints? Um.... Hey, I just model these things!
Seriously, lets say six primaries and two secondaries. I may amend the model to put in logical places for the secondaries since my original idea was to have the backs of the two upper pods be covered in missile apertures, and Freespace likes secondaries to face forward, I hear.
Remember, this model was developed from Narol's Kali, which shows six prominent gun barrels on the insides of the pods. I will maintain that.
As for texturing... um... which one is the Astaroth? :D I have no earthly idea how I'm going to do it. Heck, I don't know IF I can do it.
Venom's Arcadia, on the other hand, has given me a fair idea of how to setup the LODs and the debris, so I think I can do that.

I dont think it looks "snakey" enough to be called Naga...
Looks more like a demonic bat...

The Malay tradition holds naga to be dragons, rather than snakes with human heads, thus my choice of name. Naga is, however, my second choice. I originally wanted to name it 'Ruhk'. 'Ruhk' is an anglicised spelling of the old arabic name for the Roc in the Voyages of Sindbad.
-

Ruhk- name of assasin who killed Grand Admiral Thrawn, ironically, was also his bodyguard...(StarWars)
As far as mapping goes, last I checked I was doing that. Personally, I think Taurvi maps are in order here, but the Astaroth is definitely worth looking into...possibly even some parts from the Mara maps.

I thought that was 'rukh' in the Thrawn books.
I have no idea which maps are which. Why is there a texture for a transport that's like 1100px high? Anyway, You can texture it if you want, I just wanted to give it a shot before I gave up in disgust anger and deep seated hatred for people who know what they're doing. ;)

What are you trying to say here? that I don't know what I'm doing? :p
About the Ruhk thing, I could be wrong, havent read those books in a long time...
-
Astaroth=spiky interceptor. Taurvi=nifty sleek flat bomber.
So is it ruhkferret or rukhferret? ;)

It is 'Ruhkferret', as in the bird, not the cheeseball StarWars character.

The way you speak reminds me of a Culture Hub Mind. ;)
I like it. I really can't wait to see you texture it - how big are you planning to make it, game-wise? eg. Nephilim-size, Seraphim-size, Dragon-size, etc.
-
it looks like it should be big.
Actually...those two large hulls raised above the engine area are slightly remeniscent of a saths' beam spikes.
Maybe some crazy whacked out shivan corvette with nothing except two BFreds?
-
Hey, really cool model there! I want to see some skins.:yes:

I agree. An opportunity for a really killer tex job, like the Seraphim. :)

*Shudder* It'd need to have the armor of a cruiser, maybe a Rakshasa, very slow speed and no anti-fighter defence to be even close to balanced...and yet it would still be a terror
-
Its... um.. actually a fighter... :D
-
Reminds me of a Shydow offa Space.
I think it'd be good as some MASSIVE (juggernaught dwarfing) sized uber-ship (non-shivan-terran-or-vasudan). Like a planet killer or something. But if you insist on making it a fighter, make it quite big (on a fighter scale)
-
very cool shipn - reminds me strongly of something but i cant think what =( thats going to annoy me now lol - but sweet model will look amzing textured
-
Reminds me a littttle bit the Nial.
Then again, perhaps its just me.

Makes me think of an evil shivan mutalisk :D
-
Those pics are low resolution  can you give us something better?

No, that's genuine. She looks good with the angry red. I'd like to see custom maps on her, but that's outside of my league as yet. Either way, she looks excellent.

cut and paste is about as good as my custom maping skills go, but with Shivan ships its not so noticeable.
untouchable: sorry for the low res, but i was taking into account the fact that there are 56kers here, and i dont want to be rendering this thing for an hour or so for previews.
For those of your wondering: this ship has parts from the Nephilim, Mara, Astaroth, and Taurvi.
-
I've got this terrible urge to put her into I-war2 so I can play about with animation channels in flight. :D Wouldn't you just love to see it kind surge and tighten down as you apply the forward thrust override, or flex as it cuts through a tight turn? :D
-
I'd heard Iwar2 ships were complex but do they really do that?
-

Do they? Most don't, no.
Can they? Um. Really terribly easily. :D The upgraded version of the Molly that I'm working on is using animation channels for all the directional thrusters and for moving the engine spines in response to forward and aft thrust. You can tie effects to thrust channels, the weapons fire channel, a couple of glow channels and, most importantly, to custom script channels. Very very groovy stuff.

Hey anyone working on a FS2-Iwar2 MOD *nudge* *nudge* *wink* *wink*
If not we need one  (and I need IWar2 :p)

baaaah!!! lame excuse!!! a jpg would be no more than 200kb, a still pic of a ship is rendered in 5 seconds, and, admit it, you're LAZY!!! LAZY!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA LAzyy.... :nervous: her... never mind....
btw, did I mention your text is blu:snipe:

They're not low-res... just excessively blurred. :)
-
Narol: Anti-Alias the renders. Or do a two pass openGL render or something but don't blur them.

Phreak is doing some work on this, as am I. Mostly, lately, we've been discussing how to mangle the Freespace2 game system into Iwar2's system without giving up too much functionality.

I think he has the desire to blur pics hardcoded to his brain... :D
-
i added just a tiny bit of blur to clean up the lines, as i always do, since im not going to actually render them (those are screenshots from ts). So call me lazy if you want, but they're just previews anyway.

Why aren't you going to render them?

someone mentioned mutalisk - that reminded me of starcraft and it might be starcraft it reminds me of but i cant think of the ship must beena protoss ship it hink though

yes, the one that cloaks units, don't remember its name tho.
-
Would that be an Arbiter?
-
yes, this one, but flying backward
-
This is not an Arbiter flying backwards. This is Narol's Kali, turned upside down and given a more organic appearance.
-
I know, but that's how it looks like, as KMN pointed out
-
I thought it was called the corsair to the arbi .. whatsit

Corsairs are the Brood Wars update of the standard Protoss air unit, I think. Arbiters are the units that cloak everything under them, but not each other or themselves (I like to hide archons and reavers under them).
I could, of course, be wrong about the Corsair.
-
corsairs are the new protoss anti-air fighter jets. look like valkyres
-
got it it reminds me of the chig fighter from space above and beyond - haaaaaa that was bothering me now i can rest
-
similar to the thing from starcraft too but closer to the chig fighter =)
-
? mmh ?... gotta check again, but not in my memories, no. grrh, i could expand, but I have to catch a train :(
-

Corsairs are Protoss air-to-air units which can also deploy disruption webs (stops units from firing when underneath them); Arbiters and slow things that can cloak other objects (not Arbiters), displace, and some other stuff... :)
-
Corsairs: Faster than unupgraded scouts, rapid attack of 5 with splash damage; can generate disruption web, which causes all ground units underneath to lose the ability to attack for a short time.
Arbiters: About as slow as carriers, can cloak all player units nearby without expending energy, cannot be cloaked, can create stasis field on one unit(?), which freezes unit and makes it invulnerable, and perform recall, which will recall player units from anywhere on the map next to the arbiter.
I can't seem to remember to HPs tho... :o

I think the most important feature is that they're air-to-air only. Scouts have air-to-ground guns. ;)
-
Air-to-ground is better though, wipe out those pesky ground units.
-
One word. Reavers. :D

Carriers and Reavers are overrated. Just swarm them with Dragoons and Archons.
-
swarming reavers with dragoons is the most stupid strategy i've ever heard for SC :p

i meant swarm the opponent. As for reavers, thats what scouts are for.
