Title: Afterburners won't work.

Hello everyone, I'm new here  :)

Okay, my problem is that my afterburners refuse to fire. I press the key/hold the key/dance on the ****ing key and yet all it does is make a dying sound that I presume is what you would hear when you run out of afterburner power (my power gauge is full). I'm having this problem on the retail version of freespace 2 and also on the OEM trial version.

I'd appreciate any and all help as I'm currently at a big disadvantage in dogfights.

Have you tried FS2_Open yet?

Go here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=64520.0), download the 3.6.10 Final executable and the Launcher, and see if that fixes the problem.

I'm downloading/installing it as we speak lol. Thats a seriously big game file.

Eh? How are you installing it? Are you using the FSOInstaller? If so, you should be aware that it downloads a whole bunch of additional stuff (Graphical improvements, new campaigns), which takes a very long time.

Yes I am using the FSOInstaller. I originally came here for the new campaigns and people to play with. I then realised I might be able to solve my afterburner problem here aswell.
I don't mind waiting for it to all get on my pc and I have plenty of space. Thank you for the warning though  :)

Not a problem. But unless I am mistaken, the installer doesn't download the patch for the mediavps (the graphical improvement package).  Go here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=65038.msg1288578#msg1288578), and download it manually. Then put the vp file into the mediavps folder the installer will create.

ISTR some issues with retail FS2 and the afterburner key. I have heard no such things about FS2_Open yet, so upgrading is definitely recommended. Not to mention that, without FSO, you won't be able to use all the awesomeness the community has created over the years, and that is something that no FS2 fan should be without.

It's a common issue in retail FS2. If for some reason you can't get FSOpen working (that would be horrible!) and you must play retail, just run it in Windows 98 compatibility mode. Problem solved!

I was running in 98 compatability anyway, but thank you everyone for your help. I've gotten FSOpen and I love it, I have afterburners and the graphics are amazing  :D
