Title: Norman Borlaug dies
Post by: Kosh on September 13, 2009, 04:33:48 am
 At 95 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8253005.stm)

Quote
Norman Borlaug, the man known as the father of the Green Revolution in agriculture, has died in the US state of Texas aged 95.

Prof Borlaug won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for agricultural innovation and the development of high-yield crops.

The Green Revolution helped world food production more than double between 1960 and 1990 with Asia, Africa and Latin America in particular benefiting.

The Nobel Institute said he had helped save hundreds of millions of lives.

Thanks for giving us plenty to eat (mostly).

I remember Penn and Teller called him the greatest man who ever lived or something like that.

A real pity. Few people can claim to have done as much to change the world as him.

What's scary is how many people are trying to undo all of it in the western world. Of course its easy for them to say since they have full stomachs, but what about places they are preaching to like certain parts of Africa where malnutrition and starvation is rampant?

I've never really heard of him before right now, but now I'm ashamed to admit that.  If only all of us could manage to help even a small fraction of the number of people he did.
