Well, I nearly give up. I'm playing the campaign on hard and I can't get the secondary objective (I've done the primary). Try as I may the Bastion always goes below 35%. So I read the wiki, it said load up on bombers, and kill the Demon with Harbingers.
Great.
Well, not so much. The Harbingers are doing crap for damage. I fire off a pair and I'm lucky if they do 4% total. Rediculous. What am I doing wrong? They are worthless. There is no way with all my men firing on the pig to kill it before the Bastion goes down, but, according to the wiki the Harbingers should quickly kill it.
I'm running version 2.3 of the Freespace 1 port btw. I don't really want to start over again at this point seeing how I've almost beat it.

What damages the Bastion? Shivan bombers? Fly escort instead of bomber.

The wiki is not reliable for FS1 walkthroughs and needs to be rebuilt there, tbh.

Yeah, I've flown escort a billion times. For whatever Reason the Bastion has paper armor in this mission, one Shivan bomb hits and that's 10% down. Funny, seeing how the stats are the same on the Harbinger and the Shivan bombs.

Whaaaat? There's your problem; version 2.3 is over five years old and balanced incorrectly. Get 3.1.1 instead.
Version 2.3 was back when we were trying to run the Port side-by-side with FS2 data, and thus the FS2 statistics are used for a lot of things. Unfortunately, the Demon's hitpoints rose from 100k hitpoints in FS1 to 160k in FS2. You're doing 60% more work than the mission is balanced for!
The only problem is that 3.1.1 is not compatible with 2.3, so you'll have to restart the campaign from scratch. At this point, you may just want to finish the 2.3 campaign and (optionally) replay it with 3.1.1. Don't worry about the Bastion's hull strength; failing the secondary objective doesn't significantly affect the remaining two missions.

Yeah, I installed fsport years ago but never got around to playing it. I have everything else current such as mediavps, .exe's etc., just not fsport. Ah well, I'll go ahead and beat it the easy way then.
I was wondering why things were darned near impossible. :)

Best way to beat that mission is to follow this strategy.
Here is a strategy by redalert19243 on the DF message boards:
"The following is a fairly successful strategy I used to beat the
level..... I couldn't beat it without letting the Bastion's hull drop
below 35..... When I used this strategy the Bastion's hull remained
somewhere around 70 (which is excellent) and I really had no trouble at
all.
First, make all of Alpha wing Valkyries (including yourself) since they
have a high top speed and acceleration, which is ideal for intercepting
bombers, and equip them with Banshee and Prometheus cannons since
Ulysses can't use them. Give them Hornet missiles, but give yourself
interceptors (you'll see later). Assign Alpha wing to protect the
Bastion. Make all of Beta wing Ursa bombers and equip them with
Harbingers, Synaptics (for defense) and Stillettos. Have them attack
the Tantalus while you provide cover for the Bastion (sounds like
suicide). Your job is to target all of the bombers first (VERY
IMPORTANT) before they can reach the Bastion. The ones to look out for
are the Nephilims (initially) and Shaitans (later). A helpful way of
protecting the Bastion is to target all of the megabombs being
delivered if you can't intercept all of the bombers in time. Target
them with T since hostile (H) targeting won't pick them up. Use the
intercepts that you equipped to target the bombs since they have a
faster lock and velocity. Once you cleaned them up, go for rest of the
packs, especially Basilisks since they have nasty swarm bombs. When
your done with them, the Tantalus should be very low on health and feel
free to destroy it with whatever remaining fighters you have. In a
moment the Bastion will jump out and the mission will be complete."

One Tip more:
Don´t forget to use the key for targeting bombers and their bombs. Blow the bombs with gtm interceptors and the bombers with the gtw banshee.
