I just got word from Sandwich. It was brief, since he's on limited batteries...
To: [email protected]
Subject: still alive
Hey bro, just wanted to let you know that I'm still alive & well, but I have to conserve batteries. Looks like i'll be in for a month total - I'm in Jenin right now. :-/ Things are ok, but intense. :)
Greets to all @ HLP!
God bless!
Michael Cohen
He's still okay. :)
-
Uuuh man, he's OK. I hope he did what I asked him to do... ;7
-
I doubt they'll have given him access to the nukes and biological weapons yet.
-
Actually I wanted him to kick his general...in some extreme way.
-
Jane (my wife) and I were watching the news last night and they mentioned some of the events in Israel. I told her I was worried about things over there and she looked baffled, as I am usually uninterested in global events that do not directly involve the US Navy. I ended up telling her about Sandwich and how cool he is.
I miss the bastard. :( Glad he's okay. :)
-
Good to hear he's okay, let's hope he stays that way. :)

Somehow I don't see that possibility actually happen... :p

Heh...kicking your CO is asking for a *world* of pain.

I'm sure happy he's ok:)

You got an obsession with kicking generals?
Whats so damn hard about kicking generals?
Try kicking a fat, 60-year old russian teacher instead.
Believe, I'd choose the general any time! :p
BTW, happy to hear that our hero is OK.
No, seriously I am.;)
-
That's Good news.

i wouldn't want our sandwich fried :(

i though his service time was up? i not been paying attension to wahts been going on - have theings heated up down there and they need to call up reserves again?

Israel is only a few steps away from war, so yes the reserves are back in action.
Glad to hear Sandwich is okay.

Israel are occupying it, looking for the terrorists.
-
I didn't know sandwich ran off batteries....
i hope he comes with a 9v adaptor included!
-
Well, it's good to hear that he is still doing fine. ;) I don't think the Israeli soldiers are really at risk though; it is the civilians who need to be careful. The Palestinian military is very small and unorganized so they cannot really go for a full-out assault; they resort to the suicide bombers instead, which usually claim civilian lives instead of military ones.
i wouldn't want our sandwich fried :(
:D yeah, fried sandwiches don't taste very good IMHO. :D

LOL!

It seems everything over there is a mess. No offense but when you lock up the leader of a group, you don't expect them to get more militant? ...and this all happens right after it seems a reasonable compromise was found to help stop all of the problems in the area :p
But quite plainly, I don't agree with the methods either party in this conflict are using. (but not much I can do about it :p I especially don't agree with the whole suicide bombing mess, you're in an industrialized nation and you can't even mount say a peaceful protest? In that case if Israel was as evil as they say, you could ***** at the UN and win)
-
I don't think Palestine is much of an industrialized country..... not that I've ever been there but I think it's pretty poor.
-
Um, Palastine is a state nor country(same thing i know!).
-
There is no state (aka country as we call it) of Palestine, it doesnt exist. What you do have are the Palestinians who used to live where modern day Israel is and were kicked off their home when Israel came to be. They've been living out on their own ever since and want to go home. Israel on the other hand doesnt want them as they are afraid of some Palestinians being anti-Israel terrorists. Therefore you have the people of Israel who have long be wanting a home and wont give it up now that they have one, against the refugees who got kicked out of their homes and just want to return. Its a no-win situation down there, you cant just say one side is right and the other is wrong.
-
Well my point was that the region is relatively industrialized, the people doing the suicide bombings aren't the starving refugees. There are better ways to show their case then what is being done...
-
Thing is, wasnt long ago when a Ambulance was found with explosives in it.
-
He's still alive! Hooray!
Meh. It's all POINT OF VIEW here. Stuff over there is crazy, and it all depends on how you look at it. People are blowing themselves up over there all because of their POINT OF VIEW.
To plagerize and rip off Obi-Wan Kenobi, "It's from that certain point of view."
I won't even go into mine, I'll probably get flamed to death. ;)

They should just give a 5 day warning then nuke/level all the major religious cities. Jerusalem, Bethlehem and all those other piss-poor places. It'd stop all the damn fighting.

If you nuked all of those cities, the entire world would have to deal with a combined Muslim/Israeli jihad against the nukers. That wouldn't be fun no matter how many nukes you tossed at them.

So you want 3 BILLION people at your throat? That what you'll get when the world's Christians, Muslims, and Jews are all out to get you for nuking Jerusalem, not to mention Bethlehem. You'd plunge the world into the Crusades again! I'm guessing you'd also destroy Rome and Mecca, which would make even more people angry at you...
-
Not to mention Israel would nuke him back.
-
With the nukes they're not supposed to have. :D
-
A lot of people have nukes they shouldnt have, only a few like Britian are allowed them legally.
-
I think there's only five countries that can legally have nukes. the U.S., Britain, China, Russia, and France.
Maybe there's more, anybody think of any?
-
I think that's about it, but it doesn't really matter who "should" and "should not" have them; anyone who has the capacity to build them basically is allowed to do so. :D
-
Ahh, no China arent allowed nukes! No way ever.
-
basically, every developed and developing country has nukes, even some of the un-developed ones do (aka black market).
-
And you can rest easy that there are about 10,000 nuclear warheads sill in exisence.
-
China is a permenant member of the UN security council and as such can have as many apocalyptic weapons as it likes.
To date, America has produced over 61,000 nukes of various sizes. God knows how many are still active.
And by nuking all the major religious cities, religios wars for control or destruction of the cities would be ended once and for all. Sure, you'd be literally crucified but military tensions in the middle-east would be lowered drastically (in the grand, long-term scheme of things).
-
No. There is a special law dictating that only Britian, France, Russia and the US are legally allowed to have nukes. oh and nuking the middle-east, would get Pakistan nuking you, India nuking them etc and the world would end as we know it, nukes never solve any problem between humans.
-

That wont work. Eventhough the cities would be destoryed, the people's faith in their religion will still remain.

Why does it seem that this makes no sense... :blah:
LOL, yeah I agree. Those laws were created slightly after the end of WW2 by the winning nations, which basically consisted of the US, UK, France and the Soviet Union. The balance of power has shifted somewhat since then, but the law hasn't really been changed. Like I said though, there is no law in practice or anything; if anyone else has the capability to construct them, nobody is going to try and stop them. :D
-
Yeah. After all, if they finish, they'll HAVE NUKES... :blah:
Sometimes you wonder how we screwed up this society so much. :D

Humanities tendency to screw over anything they find, including themselves :p
It's in history, a guy invented the concept of killing, then war, then religion (I mean the religious wars (ya know, like the crusaders) not religion itself so don't flame me), then auto-matic weapons, then heavy armor (tanks), then planes, then nukes, then whatever-we-come-up-with-next (ZPE, Beams?)
:sigh:

Actually, the plane predated the tank. ;)
And while we may have a screwed up society, always remember it could be far, far worse......

Well I know we wouldn't have HLP if we were all cavemen so.. :D
-
Is it just me or do all the major world religions go through a period of extreme corruption and militancy, I mean the Jews were basically a concurring force in the "promised land", later the Christians had the crusades, and the inquisition, now the Muslims are having there crusades (jihad), it really amasses me how similar Christianity and Islam are, both have there founders basically worshipped as gods, both preach tolerance and compassion, both have been hijacked to further political goals, both have holy wars. I really feel really sorry for these people's descendants, they will have to live with the shame, the same shame that Christians must live with, for the crimes aganced you're own laws and you're own god
-
Christians don't live with the shame.. or, technically, they dont have to. theyve been forgiven by god.
and no one should have nukes. nukes should be illegal for everyone. nukes are _evil_.
-

There's one BIG difference. Christianity relies on grace; that is, Jesus atoned for all our sins. Islam relies on personal service; if you're not good enough, and don't perform all your rituals everyday, then you don't get to "go to Heaven".
-
well isn't that sort of like Judaism
-
Judaism (believed by Jews) is very, very different. They do not believe that Jesus Christ was God; they believe that the Messiah is still to come. :)
-
Just so I know (curiosity) how do people tell when god forgives them for something - I know comparatively little about christianity... :p
-
You ask, and He hears. (He has very good hearing.) ;) All you need do is ask for forgiveness sincerely; and it is given to you. :)
-

Steak hit it right on nose. We believe that Jesus was a false Messiah, and the real one has not yet arrived.
*changes topic back to nukes*
China is definitely allowed to have nukes, as they have nuclear submarines that carry ICBMs with nuclear warheads capable of taking out a city on the West Coast from about 4000 miles away.
*changes topic to Middle East*
I've got an idea. Why don't they just give Israel to us at HLP? Steak can be president and we can all go live in HLPLand happily ever after. No more violence because there are no religious owners of the country. :D

Yeah, then a asteroid comes or aliens and we get wiped out. Also about China, NO! It doesnt matter what gear they've got, their not allowed them.
-
I'm almost positive that China is a nuclear-legal country...but whatever you say
-
Nuclear "legal"?
thats the most rediclous oxymoron i've ever heard.
If there was any kind of enforcable "law" then NO NUKES would be the only legal thing. China is in possession of nuclear material as is N.korea, Pakistan, India and probably Iraq as well.
I wouldnt trust any of them to sit the right way round on a toilet seat given the populations capacity for rational thought, but luckily the threat of a nuclear winter seems to have stopped them wiping us all out.
Still..such technology should have never been made available to them - or us for that matter.

Nukes are just bad, let's put it that way. But notice how there have been no wars on the world scale (e.i. World War I, World War II) since the invention of nuclear power?
-
I thin without nukes WWXXXXIV would have happened , everyone is afraid of starting the end of the world
-
Cause so far everyones been too scared to do it. Not that it will make a difference - it should be interesting to see what happens on that front when all the oil runs out.
-
as some genius once said (and i cant remember the name, probably Einstein) "I know not what weapons WW III will be fought with, but WW IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

Yup...like in Red Storm Rising, World War III, and there weren't nukes used at all (but they started thinking about them at the end of the war)
-

I guess it makes sense; all three religions originated in the same place (referred to as the Semite religions) and were created around similar philosophies. ;)
Cause so far everyones been too scared to do it
Yeah, that's pretty much why nobody has really used these since WW2, along with the fact that it would not sit well with world opinion for the same reason. Still, someone desperate enough would probably go right ahead with the "scorched earth" strategy. ;)

Yeah, it was signed around the 1960's between the nuclear powers of the world, Britian, Franch, USA and Russia. Nuclear weapons are needed anyway, to prevent asteroids etc from wiping us out.
-

mmh? they'll just use one of the many "undisclosed yet" power sources they've made up, and won't use since they don't make valuable money like oil does :p
-
Propane should work well, and it would reduce reliance on some of the oil-rich "rogue nations" in the middle east. Humanity is too reliant on the environment right now to make that a viable option, but that should change in 50 years or so with the progress of technology. ;)
-
"Judaism (believed by Jews) is very, very different. They do not believe that Jesus Christ was God; they believe that the Messiah is still to come"
well duhh, I know that, I was refering to the "one big diference" between between christianity and islam, the "if you're not good enough, and don't perform all your rituals everyday, then you don't get to 'go to Heaven'.", doesn't Judaism have a similar position
-

propane (natural gas) comes from the same stuff oil does, they're all considered petrochemicals. when oil runs out,so will natural gas
-
They come from the same thing, but there is more natural gas left than oil. Oil will run out first.
-
The primary differences between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are these:
1) Christ is the Messiah in Christianity; in Islam and Judaism he is considered a prophet.
2) Christianity doesn't have ANY dietart restrictions; Judaism (pork and non-kosher foods) and Islam (alchohol) do.
3) Muslems believes that Mohammed is the final prophet God (AKA Yahweh/Iehovah/Allah) sent; obviously, Christians and Jews do not.
4) Christians are waiting for the Second Coming; Jews and Muslims are waiting for the First.
And yes, I do know that I used 'I' instead of 'J' in Iehovah, this is because there is no 'J' in the latin alphabet.
-
The Middle East will be in serious trouble when the oil goes out, but war might break out when theres a tiny amount left to fight over.
-
When there's a small amount the prices will rise so high no one will want to buy anything oil-based and the industry will just go Boof...

What, me worry? :p
Anyway, we're going to be moving outof Jenin today, to another location nearby. It's not the same as getting out, but it's a step in the right direction. :)

Woohoo! :nod::yes:

yeah! cool! go sandwich!
keep safe, sandwich... (well, fine, he's never going to read that but anyway.)
:D
-
good to hear, very good to hear...
About the asteroid, just nuke it. At 1 mile across, it doesnt stand a chance against some of the ICBMs we've got.
-
however unless we nuke the WHOLE surface at ojne parts are going to hit earth no matter what.
-
Well, it all depends on where they hit then... :D
-
Good to hear from him again!

Anyone played that adventure game called The Dig? They proposed a very similar scenario in that. ;)
And it's good to hear that sandwich is getting out of the front lines. :)

He's still safe, that's good. But I hope he isn't moving into the place I read about in the newspaper. The fighting sounded pretty nasty in some places today.
I just hope he comes back safely...

not so. At one mile across, a few ICBMs (or their spacefaring counterparts) targeted at different sections of the asteriod would pretty much take it down to a few good sized chunks. The nuclear detonations would destroy any of the smaller parts meaning the asteriod would be relatively debris-free. More missiles can be launched at the remaining large chunks to break them down further. Finally, after there are no significant chunks left, a nuke can be programmed to reach a certain point before detonation (where NASA expects the missile to intercept the remaining debris) and the nuke can be detonated within close proximity to the debris cloud which should take out whatever's left. Realisticly however, anything the size of a briefcase or smaller (which most of the remaining debris will be) is no threat as there's an atmosphere above us thats very good at melting things as they come in.
-
The problem is, ICBMs are not designed to intercept targets in space, and we'd have to modify them - meaning that we probably wouldn't have that many warheads, meaning that something would possibly be able to get through and then...
-
What they did in The Dig was to put two bombs at selected locations on an asteroid to deflect its course, so that it would move into a stable earth orbit. (nukes are much less effective in space due to the lack of an atmosphere; shockwave would be much smaller)
-

not much of a problem, mount the warheads on the old redstone rockets, just launch more of them. Or just put a nuclear silo up inot orbit between now and 2800 :p

I still gotta play that game...
-
We have enough nukes to turn it into molten rock. I reckon we should build more nukes. Thing is, nuking asteriods isnt direct, the blast is near it and the shockwave should alter its course into a stable earth orbit(in which case we get to mine it) or away which is good too.

or we can just sheath the tip of a nuclear missile with molybdenum and shoot straight at the center of the asteroid, reduce it to a few chunks all going in different directions :D

It is used on many of the FS2 ships for armor, so that could well be true.
