Self-explanatory. Seriously, I take the Colly ;)
-
Moloch, for the jagged protuberances (best phrase ever!) and the general feelign of Menace every time I see one.
-
I've chosen Collosus (mostly becuse of upcoming HTL), but a FS has a lot of cool ships, including Orion, Deimos, Hades, Hatshepsut,Sobek...
-
The Orion: armored brick never looked so damn good.
Please note this does not apply to the version in the MediaVPs.
-
No Aeolus, Fenris or Leviathan?
-

Agreed
-
Wait what the hell is the GVC Sai?
No GVC Aten?
I like the Moloch. Even though it's kind of a joke - it looks way tougher than it is.
-
It's a Vasudan cruiser from Inferno, I don't know what is it doing here.
-
GTD Hades for the first time I saw it (JAD :D ).
-
Canonically, Hatshepsut.
Fanon, maybe the Raynor, Karuna, Saturn, and those damn unnamed awesome ships from BWO.
Also the TI Aesir.
-
BWO has unnamed ships? :P If you mean their destroyers, those have been named...
Also, if we're talking Fanon, I'm voting for the BP version of the Raynor closely followed by the Sirona.
-
As far as fanon goes, I have to go with the GTD Titan. Your cruisers can't resist awesome of that magnitude!
By the way, why do so many people hate the current HTL Orion?
-
By the way, why do so many people hate the current HTL Orion?
Cause it's just boxes for the sake of boxes. Good hi-poly jobs follow the design and form of the original model, whereas the Orion just has extrusions and blobs tacked on to it.
-
By the way, why do so many people hate the current HTL Orion?
It's an armored brick. It brooks no extrusions.
-
Cause it's just boxes for the sake of boxes.
IMO it's boxes are brilliantly placed to make it more interesting. It's true that it doesn't follow the original design all the time, but it's still the Orion.
-
Orion, for its true majesty and "city in space" feeling. But well, most of the FS ships look really cool.
Indeed, GVC Sai should be the Aten.
-
Sobek.
I've never understood people's fascination with the Orion either.
It's pretty unremarkable.
-
The Aeolus.
-
Swapped the Sai out for the Aten.
I had to go with the Demon. It manages to cast a really imposing presence over the battlefield, like a great bloated insect. I've loved flying around the thing ever since Evangelist.
-
Coolest looking?
Hecate.

I think it looks incredible impressive.
-
The Rakshasa for me. Oozes menace, even if it doesn't back it up the way the Lillith does. Wish I could have picked more than one though - the Arcadia, the mentu and the Fenris/Leviathan would have been on there as well.
-

Cause it's just boxes for the sake of boxes. Good hi-poly jobs follow the design and form of the original model, whereas the Orion just has extrusions and blobs tacked on to it.
That's why I use Trashman's Orion, it's random boxiness is at a much lesser severity.
-
Should be relatively self-explanatory, the GTD Hades.
-
GTD Orion = enormous, supersized horizontal skyscraper :D
Looking so complicated, the Orion is beautiful. Still can't take Colly from top 1, though. Looks pretty complicated, also strikes fear in your heart the first time you saw it in the FS2 Sixth Wonder. "WTF is that gigafortress nine clicks away from me?!"
As a representation of the coolest-looking ships ever in the FS universe, the Colly engaged the NTD Repulse. "Repulse" is tremendously a cool name, and I love the scene where they bombarded each other with Green Beams strong enough to knock out a cruiser in seconds. This was like watching a dramatic sci-fic battle between good and evil.
This eventually led to the vaporization of the Repulse, though
-
Aeolus, its stubborn looks fits its character so well.
-
Fenris/Lev
ever since my first foray into the FS universe in the FS Demo standing 3rd watch on the Orff the Fenris class has had a special hold on me, I mostly like the 20th century naval ship look.
-
Canon, I've got to go with Hattie (can't wait for HTL), although it has a lot of pretty darn close competition from the Orion, Demon, Deimos, Rakshasa, and Moloch. Hecate, Lucifer, Aeolus, and Hades aren't bad either, but the Colossus has never particularly impressed me beyond it's size.
Fanon, I have to agree with Blue Planet's Titan and Raynor. Both of them exude so much awesome that I had to strap my jaw closed for the duration of the campaign. What was it the Sanctuary guy said? "Your ships are as beautiful as they are powerful?"
-
I voted for the Deimos. It looks both sleek and boxy at the same time, and manages to convey a sense of speed and power. In other words, to me it looks like the perfect corvette.
-
I love the Mentu, it's just great.
-
IMO it's boxes are brilliantly placed to make it more interesting. It's true that it doesn't follow the original design all the time, but it's still the Orion.
No, the boxes on the original Orion were brilliantly placed. The boxes on the HTL Orion were randomly placed; the modeller even said as much.
-
Really?
The Original Orion doesn't have brilliantly-placed boxes. It doesn't HAVE any boxes. It's just a single box...not a very interesting one at that. It's low poly and uninspiring.
I like the greebling. It may be random but at least there's detail. The detail isn't totally out of place either. There's no way the retail one can look as good as the HTL one. The original lacks any defining details whatsoever. I'm not saying that there can't be a better high poly version, but there's no way the old one is better than the one we have now.
-
I went Orion, i was never that keen on the shape before. But it grows on you.
-
I voted for the Deimos. It looks both sleek and boxy at the same time, and manages to convey a sense of speed and power. In other words, to me it looks like the perfect corvette.
Voted Deimos too, for the reasons above, plus to me it is kind of the iconic FS2 design. The cover of the original FS2 box probably would have been enough of a reason for me to buy the game - if I hadn't already been a big FS1 fan and therefore determined on getting it anyways. ;)
-
It doesn't HAVE any boxes. It's just a single box...
You gain wisdom.
It's a giant armored brick. It shouldn't have but a single box and a few things tacked on outside. This monolithic form conveys durablity, raw power, in a way that of the greebled version or the Hectate simply cannot.
-
I'm going with the Medical Ship
-
I'm not saying that there can't be a better high poly version, but there's no way the old one is better than the one we have now.
Well SPECTER87 had three different Orion models in the works... :P
-
Before he left for inexplicable reasons.
-
That would be a Hecate.
-
His inexplicable reasons would be a Hecate?
What?
-
And cue fail on my part.

But, uh, he said it was a Hecate in that post...
-
*headdesk*
I'm just going to go curl up in a corner and die now.
-
Typhoid, Typhoon, Typhon.
Hard to say which has stomped more human asses, but I'll vote for the one that's a ship.
-
Actually, two of those are ships.
Assuming a submarine counts as a 'ship'.
-
Typhoid, Typhoon, Typhon.
Hard to say which has stomped more human asses, but I'll vote for the one that's a ship.
Given the number of people who played Oregon Trail I'd say Typhoid's stomped the most asses. I certainly lost dozens of family members to it myself. Damn typhoid.
-
Omg! It's tied. . .
This is why there should've been a deadline, add a bit of voter pressure to determine the winner.
-
That's why I use Trashman's Orion, it's random boxiness is at a much lesser severity.
There's no randomness in the boxyness. Everyting is as I have planned.
That said, I'm glad someonebody like it. I tried to keep the feel and look of the original as much as possible.
-
No, the boxes on the original Orion were brilliantly placed. The boxes on the HTL Orion were randomly placed; the modeller even said as much.
Wich makes me think that there are cases where brilliance and randomness can be very close together
-
I voted orion, nothing brings back old memories like it. If there is one ship that represented freespace, its gotta be the orion...
But the collosus was pretty kool... cool but not very good looking asthetically. It would probably look great but we sendom see ALL of it. Also, it seems half of it is empty space. Like, shrink the ship, make it harder to hit, rather than a long pole of fibrous meshwork of cobwebs all the way down (look closely at that long structure).
-
I can't decide, so I'm not voting. It's a toss-up between the Aeolus, Hecate, Iceni, Orion, Demon, Ravana, Sathanas, Hades, Hatshepsut and Sobek in general (for me).
-
The Orion is very imposing and epic, but not particularly cool-looking. That award I give to the Hatshepsut.
-
Teh Lucifer. For being the classic FS1 badass boss ship. :)
-
Once ragingloli finishes it, the Hatshepsut.
-
Gotta be the Hecate, sure it has the dumbest shape but it is still pretty damn cool. I mean who can resist all those wings and strange projections?
-
Actually, I like the Demon too.
Too bad TrashMan's is... bleh.
-

Yeah...
-

Is what? Unfinished?
-
Mostly, yes. Also, the horns... well, IIRC you removed those, which was good.
-
I don't feel like mapping it.
I've put the model up for grabs a long time ago if anyone wants to have a go at it, and the head is mapped.
-
Linikage plox...
Also, I used to like the Aten and Sobek quite a bit, Aten looked like a cool nipply sleek and fast shaped thingy in FS1 days... And the Sobek was just RAWR! The Tripple A beams on itin the distance during the first Meson Bomb mission will stay with me for ages.
But yeah Orion is awesomeness.....
-
Hathesput. Forever burned into my mind as the first capship I saw in FS.
Plus, it has that glorious HTL job coming.
-
Lucy, the red, the black, the shape... It's just so cool!! A fact increased by the storylines of derelict and Descent: Freespace.
-
Space lobster is ugly yet terrorisingly endearing.........
-
Space lobster is ugly yet terrorisingly endearing.........
Orion is a box.
-
A box with character though?
But on the other hand the Hecate is not a box with character
-
The Hecate isn't a box at all.
Its a collection of oddly shaped boxes welded together.
I don't get why people say that the retail Orion has character...
It's...bland, generic space brick!
-
So's the Ursa, but they both have Character.. Just check the command anis that feature the Orion.. Gorgeous, The first Orion to show up in retail, defending the Knossos when you spy your first Asteroth... That was buh-reel-eeant!
-
I've never played much of FS2 in retail (only up to mission with the Roman's Blunder) before switching over to MVPs. I saw the HTL Orion first, so I'm more used to it's features as compared to the retail one which looks really low poly.
-

Yeah, I meant that it's not a box, and it has character. Also the Orion does have character, every time I see it I see the Bastion and the Galatea
-
The Orion only had character in FS1, where there were only two really important ones, the Galatea and Bastion.
In FS2 they're thrown around like used toilet paper.
-
Yeah...and I played FS2 first which pretty much portrayed them as "Space Brick #12781738", also with MVPs on (which makes me more accustomed to the high-poly version, hence it's greebles look natural to me). I couldn't bring Myself to go Über old school and play pure retail...
That may have ruined it for me...
-

Which is exactly what a warship should be. A massive, slab-sided collection of armor plate, weapons, and flight deck.
The Orion.
-
Actually, I like the Demon too.
Too bad TrashMan's is... bleh.
Is what? Unfinished?
Which is yours??? In themedia VPs? That one in the VPs, it looks nice except for those two big dumbass pipes near the engine. I don't know what that's about but it really turns me off to be honest.
-
There's a SD DEMON in the media VP? Where? When? How?
-
Three very valid questions.
Akalabeth? :p
-
Oh, no negative. I was talking about the Deimos. I quoted the last message re: the Deimos in the conversation but in hindsight I see that was misleading.
-
Well that does clear that up, but also another question I have is why do people complain about those pipes on the deimos so much? I've never seen anything wrong about them. :\
-
I rather like them myself, though you do get a rather amusing effect in a mission like that one from Derelict where one is repeatedly getting disabled and repaired. :p
-
Rakshasa. I think it's very cool looking, even if it's not that powerful.
-

The Orion.
It still has no character in FS2...
-
Rakshasa. I think it's very cool looking, even if it's not that powerful.
That's because its subsystem armour is crap. :p
The Deimos also looks a bit like a huge chunk of metal.
-
Aren't they all huge chunks of metal?
-
They should rightfully be hollowed-out chunks of metal. There's a difference.
-
Wait what?
Ooooh now I see.
But technically seeing as we don't know what the Shivan ships are made of, they are not all huge, hollowed out, chunks of metal.
-
Go Deimos! GO GO!
-
Deimos - End of discussion as far as i'm concerned for the canon ships, however the BP GTVA ships all rock esp the destroyers
-
[grand national commentary]
And the Orions picking up the lead, DEimos has it in his sights as he closes the gap between.
[/grand national commentary]
-
What wut. Both of those are the same - Big boxes. :D

SSD Lucifers a distant third as Moloch. Hecate and Typhon vie for fourth. I'd say this is a close race but right now it's only a two-horse ship race!
-

whaa? Deimos is no box man, wait for someone to upgrade a little more that model and you'll see.
Also, I'm sorry I wasn't able to find any concept art about it either :S
-
It still has no character in FS2...
That's hardly the ship's fault.
-
i think i might like the shivan ships more if they weren't trying to shoot at me every time i fly in for a closer look :'( WHY DON'T THEY LOVE ME?!!
-

They're trying to communicate with you!
-
Actually I don't think the Orion is that cool-looking, per se. That's not to say that it's look isn't good, just that it's not 'awesome'.
The Hecate, or the Aeolus, or some of the Vasudan/Shivan ships, IMO, look 'cooler'
-
I'm surprised no one else thinks that the Sathanas looks good...
-
I would think it'd get at least a few more votes. I was toying with it myself, since it takes the "brooding insect" idea of the Demon and takes it one step further. I've always thought of it as a massive, bloated, pregnant spider sort of thing...kind of a mecha-Shelob. :p
-
Defiantly the SD Lucifer ;)

Both the Orion and Demos are MEHTAL BAWKSEZ!!! THEY COME TO US IN MEHTAL BAWKSEZ!!!
-
Just popped in to check on the poll.
The BO!rion is still going strong
-
hmm, nearly 100 votes not bad, i still stand by the fen/lev though
-
And I still can't make up my mind. :p
-
Am I the only one who's noticed that ships without HTL models are getting fewer votes...?
Maybe they don't have HTL models yet because nobody lieks them. :(
-
NTF Boadieca - Arguably one of the UGLIEST ships (if you can call it a ship) in FreeSpace History...
-
I know, the butt-engines? They DO NOTHINGGGGGG!
-
As compared to the Iceni... :s
-
I vote for the Iceni, its been my favourite ever since I first laid eyes on it.
-
I know, the butt-engines? They DO NOTHINGGGGGG!
Is it a good idea to microwave this? NTF Boadieca...
-
Rakshasa! Rakshasa! Rakshasa!
On a side(and literal) note, we need a cryogenic ship or something.
-
That was a real difficult decision for me, because I actually think that almost all capital ship in FS look rather cool. My favourites are:
- Iceni
- Hatshepsut
- Lucifer
- Sathanas
I ultimately voted for the Iceni.
-
On a side(and literal) note, we need a cryogenic ship or something.
Check out the Vidar from Warzone.
-
Or the Saturn from PI. The Saturn was originally designed as a deep-space explorer, not a command destroyer.
-
Didnt the original incarnation of blue planet have a heavily modified orion (radicaly altered model) that was a cryo ship
-
Um, the current incarnation of Blue Planet has that as well.
-
I got a heavily HTLd model of barney in mine... Thought it was Vishnan mindfoolery :nervous:
-
Um, the current incarnation of Blue Planet has that as well.
What, the Sanctuary?
-
Yes, the sacntuary.
In the fluff it's a "sleeper ship", which means people are held in cryogenic sleep inside.
