A friend of mine is trying to log on to FS2net but it says lost connection.

Did they register and verify their account?  You can no longer log in with unverified accounts.

Where exactly does he get to when he gets that message?  Did he follow the instructions in the first post?

He goes to log into PXO and then it says connection to server lost

Have him delete the multi.cfg file in the data directory and try again.  It may be looking for the original PXO servers instead of FS2netD.

he doesn't have a multi.cfg file only a text document

Well, it should be deleted.

Side note: It could be that his OS is hiding file extensions. In that case, it will show up as a text file. Should there be a text file called f2_open_pxo.cfg somewhere, delete that as well.

Well there is a multi.log as well which may be the one showing as a text file.  Deleting it won't hurt anything either.  Not having a multi.cfg is fine but like E said look for a hidden version.

It keeps saying he's been disconnected even after deleting the two files

Split this out into it's own topic.

Select the debug build (one ending in d) from the launcher and run it.  Attach both the FS2_Open and multi.log from the data directory.
