I have an older copy of FSO via the old installer, and my recent virus scanner picked it up as:

Backdoor: Win32/IRCbot

It's not a virus. It's just a custom IRC client that did let you monitor the lobby. I don't think it works anymore.

Multiplayer got a big revamp after the 3.6.10 Final release, so if you want to play multi with others, upgrading is necessary.
