I'm pretty much certain there will be a "No" in here somewhere with a really good reason but I had been wondering if there is any problems or technicalities as to why Freespace/Total Conversions might not work on the iPhone or other counterpart phones. The iPhone already has a variety of 3d games but lacks anything like this.

The main hurdle would be that, AFAIK, noone on the dev team has an iPhone SDK. The other, bigger hurdle is the relatively limited input methods the iPhone offers, FS2 really needs a keyboard.

Well, to answer your question, first think about where the original FS2 team is now. Second, look at the number of controls you need in the game.

Limited texture memory and as already mentioned input methods. . .
Although I did show some of you a 3D space sim on my old Sony I doubt we could cram more than the demos worth into a single .jar

The FS2 Demo is 62.x MB, so there you go. :p
-
Question though is "why would you?"

Iphone is pony agreed. . .

I can't really see much need for this, there are probably more appropriate portable systems to port this to.
