Title: Hello
Post by: Yancho1 on October 24, 2009, 09:55:10 pm
Hello, I've been reading these forums for quite some time, but I finally decided to register.
I already know that I shouldn't talk about FreeSpace 3.
I had an idea to make a mod based on StarControl II, the Ur-Quan Masters, but unfortunately I have no modding or FREDing skills. Maybe some of you could make something based off my second favorite Space Game? (FreeSpace is of course #1).

Should probably be moved to "Missions and Campaigns" forum.

Or "FreeSpace Modding" now that I think about it.

Hi there and welcome if you have not already been.

Actually I'd love to see a UQM mod myself.

I posted here for 2 reasons:
1) That was only a suggestion and in no way a prompt to start such an immense project.
2) As I am not a REAL member of this community, I wish to keep my post count at 0.

And for those who might want to make a mod based off UQM, you would need:
1) The Storyline, taken from the game.
2) Music, from the Remix Pages.
3) Images of ships for models:  Here (http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/ComSim_Central)  and Here (http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/Star_Control_II_ComSim_images)
4) a team consisting of: (Some people may take more than one task)
4a) Someone to remix the music remixes
4b) Someone to make 3D models from the ComSim central pics
4c) Someone to integrate new things in-game with their weapons and make sure they work.
4d) Someone to think of fighter ship models to fit in with the FreeSpace game.
4e) Someone to FRED the missions
4f) A creative person to modify the story
5) Motivation (Could be in the form of Caffeine and Alcohol)
6) Communications images from in-game
7) Voice actors who can mimic the originals (Optional)
and more.
Please take up this HUGE responsibility, someone!

I love starcontrol II and certain story/race aspects of my own mod are heavily inspired by it.
Part of the fun of Starcontrol though, is the puzzle/freeroaming/resourcecollecting part, which I dont really see mixing so well with FS2. Not to mention the funny multiple choice dialouges.
Then there are the ships. The Pkunk's fury with it's crazy 3 firing way is easy enough to make. But shouting insults to recharge weapon energy? And worse yet, resurrection?
Then there are ships that throw up special shielding (Yehat, Utwig), The avatar's ( Chmmr) satelite's that intercept incoming projectiles and the Kohr-Ah's discs that stay into place.
Aka modding nightmare  :p

Multiple dialogue choices can be done, ask Gen. Battuta for details.

It's possible, but rather involved FRED-wise.

There are probably better ways to do it than the way you did, Battuta.

Not too sure about that. And I have seen the mission in question. That being said, it would be nice to have something like a send-message-tree sexp, with definable forks....

Probably, but I can't immediately think of any...

I'm very much interested in multiple dialogue choices in fred.
Battuta may I see an example of how you acomplished it?

One example can be found in one of the tech demos the WCS team have released.

Yep, I believe WCS has done it as well.

I haven't looked at their method. If you're canny with variables, keypress-reset (a lot!), and good writing, it'll be time-consuming but not hugely difficult.

I've not played this game, but it seems pretty nice.

The only thing is, looking at the screenshots, it looks more like a space RPG, kinda like the X series, but with a more retro graphic style.
How well is that going to port over to FreeSpace?? I.E. is it a fairly combat heavy game?

The game could be made by making missions with the Vindicator (Default name for the Flagship) going around and you being a fighter escort for it. You could influence the communications in-game. (For example: by selecting the Flagship in comm menu, you can give commands that correspond to certain dialogue choices. Furthermore, you could also say what system to go to at the end of each mission. I certainly think that taking out the Sa-Matra will be an exciting mission.

The Fury's resurrection could be done by making a ship at full strength jump in, determined by a complicated chain of SEXPs. Insults could be added for flavor. Also, after n times the Fury insults you, it can unload its weapons on you again.
The Yehat and Utwig shielding could be set up using damage reduction that recharges after x seconds.
The ZapSats are three fighters that are told to protect the Avatar and are armed with lazers.
The Kor-Ah's discs could again be fighters that move forward z and then move towards the nearest enemy in a y radius. They detonate upon collision, causing damage like a bomb shockwave.

Shofixti Scouts could be done the same way.

I came here to ask you to do it, not to hear excuses for why it would be too hard to start.

Oh, wow, dude.

Let me set you straight on something: everyone with the skills to work on this mod is busy with their own projects.

If you want it done, learn how to FRED, learn how to model, and do it yourself. Other people have done this. If you can't, your fault.

If you want to start a project but do not have the means to begin or execute the project, give some reason for why anyone should want to join in with you for the said project. And start learning about how FSO works, etc. Being rude or arrogant about the matter will gain you no support whatsoever.

Furthermore, if you're trying to begin a project while simultaneously having no initiative to involve yourself with that project, why would anyone want to work with you? Put some effort in, present yourself well, and you just might start going somewhere.

And what kind of fighter escort would that be? Part of the fun of Starcontrol is that you can fly all those crazy ships yourself. I'd say you either fly the Vindicator yourself or bust.

which leads me to this
The Fury's resurrection could be done by making a ship at full strength jump in, determined by a complicated chain of SEXPs. Insults could be added for flavor. Also, after n times the Fury insults you, it can unload its weapons on you again.
The Yehat and Utwig shielding could be set up using damage reduction that recharges after x seconds.

Shofixti Scouts could be done the same way.
What you suggested for the Fury could work for the A.I but becomes a whole lot more complicated to pull off for the player. Same with the scout.
The Kor-Ah's discs I could see working though. The Zapsats wouldn't stay in orbit around the avatar with a guard order though.

I came here to ask you to do it, not to hear excuses for why it would be too hard to start.
:wtf:
Oookay, well that's certainly not the attitude to go with to get people into a project.

Actually the part that set off my radar the most was:

"I am not a REAL member of the community and want to keep my post count 0"?

WTH? So instead of coming here to learn and [/b]make contacts[/b] and generally grow as a person and a modder, you came to post a request, go away, and explect people to FLOCK to your aid just because you have an idea?

Yeah, good luck with that!

Didn't you mean to ask about flowers?

Flowers are pretty and smell nice. They come in many different colors. There are lots of flowers. Daises, Roses, Daffodils, and Pansies are all flowers.
Now be a good human and
LEAVE ME ALONE!

P.S.: I don't have the time to learn how to make models, FRED, and modify FS2 SCP. If I did, I wouldn't be asking you to please do it for me.
P.P.S.: If you wanted me to do it, it would probably take me around 5 years. And that's just a rough estimate based of my current free-time levels.

Heck, neither do I!

That excuse would float better if we didn't have a med student in here running a big project.  :p

Hello.

I don't think anyone is going to come out and work for you under the conditions you specified.

Especially not if you are a) Unwilling to be a part of this community, b) Unwilling to do any work of your own on the project, and c) incapable of rational discourse on the matter.

What exactly did you expect the reaction to be? Did you think we would be all eager to do all the work for you? Did you think we were all so starved for ideas that we would jump on your bandwagon just because you asked demanded we do so?

Not to be rude or... assertive in a negative fashion,

...But I'd humbly like to propose for Yancho's own good that this thread be locked. This is just going to boil down into a flame war, after all. If he has something useful to add to this thread at a later time, he'd be better off asking an admin to unlock this one.
