Title: Ubuntu user + Joystick
Post by: camaris on October 28, 2009, 01:35:21 am
Greetings,

Now my question goes to not really which is the best joystick, but those of you who play freespace in ubuntu, linux,.. what joystick do you use or know that it works. Currently I am playing with the mouse and sometimes is frustating, so after reading the posts with references to Saitek, MS, Logitech Wingman Extreme,...Sidewinder Precission Pro and so on, frankly speaking I do not know which one to use.
Please recommend me some options for freespace+linux to study.
Thanks in advance.

No, seriously, any advice?

Surprised nobody's responded.

(Screw mouse and keyboard, by the way; just playing with the keyboard is fine.)

Anyway, I have no particular experience with Linux, but assuming that it works with Ubuntu, the Saitek Cyborg Evo is a very popular choice.

Change of plans

At the end i am recycling an old gamepad (and old unused wife's present): Logitech wingman action gamepad

no idea how to attach a pic

It works with ubuntu, and since it has 6buttons on the top I can select several keys to it.
Ubuntu has this tool jscalibrator to callibrate joysticks, gamepads, but in the new version of ubuntu 9.10, there comes the following message in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install jscalibrator

Quote
emilio@emilio-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install jscalibrator
[sudo] password for emilio:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package jscalibrator is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package jscalibrator has no installation candidate

So it seems that there is no current tool to callibrate joysticks for ubuntu 9.10 (correct me if I am wrong) and I would not achieve anything by buying a joystick.

The gamepad sensitivity is way too much and I am not able to reduce it from the options in game.
What is the "deadspace" option by the way?

hi,

you can calibrate joystick with "jscal" and "jtest" which are in the "joystick" package available on ubuntu 9.10.
I have a Saïtek P2600 working well on this distro (however it didn't need any special calibrating).

I'm running Linux Mint 7 (based off Ubuntu).

My Logitech Extreme 3d pro worked upon plugging it in.
