This is a topic where we can post reasons WHY we think Shivans are the ultimate race. It'll turn sick, but hey, this is the internet!
What if Shivans didn't exist?
1. The T-V War would have kept going on and on until someone gets annilhated by laser turrets and...and..some other "advanced" weapon they had back then.
2. Carl the Shivan would be named Carl the Terran
3. Well....we would still have the Galatea.
4. We wouldnt get the idea to develop beam cannons! (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO)
5. Freespace 1 would have been a boring war where you know your race will win.
6. The number of campaigns in existance would be reduced by 75%
7. We wouldnt get the cool chance of watching Shivans incinerate Terran and Vasudans with big ships and weapons.
8. No Sobek?!?!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Why Shivans Rule
1. Who doesn't like bio-android spiders with advanced knowledge and a big weapon embedded in their bodies?
2. Their weapons will scare the hell out of you (Having the Ravana fire its main beams at you while you have your volume at full blast.)
3. Their weapons rule. Period.
4. The Sathanas. Period.
5. The Mara rules all other fighters.
6. They make search and destroy look good.
-Edited for a spelling mistake-
And remember...no one can hear you scream in subspace.

Forget the Sathanas. Think Lucifer. When I see the Lucifer I get this freaky feeling. I don't get it when there's a Sathanas.
I love the plasma cannons on their shouldiers!
-
Now, if the Lucifer had some more impressive weaponry... I would've been really scared  - I played through FS2 before I could get FS (I played the first ten mission though)
BTW: Shivan blade things on the arms are awesome :D

Shivan blad things on the arms... *hrmm....*
Methinks I just got another Shivan fighter idea. ;)
-
3. Their weapons rule. Period.
Well, I think that only applies to their beam cannons (excluding the SRed); their fighter lasers are pretty crappy and their missiles are just weaker versions of mainstream GTVA missiles. :p:D

Well it was a little more scary, because you had no hope..
Freespace 1 (Mission where you fly a dragon)
"oh my god, its the Lucifer!"
Freespace 2
"o look, another juggernaut, well our POS Colossus will blow it up"

  BTW when i was compliting freespace 1 for the first time (48 h of non stop playing :p ) i had creeps all over my body... And i liked it...
Freespace 2 was more impressive, but it didn't gave me those creepes i liked in freespace 1, so i found freespace 1 story better :p

That was in the beginning. Late there was 40 juggernaughts, Capella explosion and Admiral Petrarch.
Scaarry.

40? no, 80 :D

Just put BFReds on the Lucifer and it kicks ass again.

Hmmh, he never seemed very scary to me? :headz:

Hey, scariest part in FS2 is when I thought the shivans would take all the Bosch beer!
no seriously...
in FS2, I thought the part where the Sathanas jumped in for the first time in the nebula freaked me out... this huge arm coming out of the fog... me saying "holy ****".. and being knocked 10km with flaming exhaust and an explosion... very fun and scary =)

Oh you will be, you wil be scared to s*** (http://www.plauder-smilies.de/evilgrinblack.gif) when you (if you) play the campaign that I won't talk about right now! ;7
-
It was about 11 PM when I played FS1 for the first time, I installed it and clicked on play and then when the part of FS1 intro where LT *** begun to call: MAYDAY, MAYDAY the light went out and it was totall darkness but I didn't bother too much cause I wanted to see the intro and wow it was really creapy!
I recommend you all to play Freespace games in totall darkness just the moniter screen light. :D

Correction. Their missiles ARE GTVA missiles. And, well...
It seems the Shivans were cool in FS1, from what I've seen of it (I still have yet to play the campaign, but I might as well have from an informational standpoint), but they crapped out in FS2- bacame, essentially, just another evil alien race. For some reason, 100 ships slightly more powerful than another ship just isn't all that impressive, while a single, mysterious ubership with technology that can knock out a planet while you're still using peashooters is great. Likely, even if there were no Colossus to make the Sath look like just another Shivan ship, having way too many of them would have ruined the effect. I mean, which were you actually closer to freaking in- the missions where the Ravanna suddenly pops out of nowhere, and starts blowing you to bits, or the missions where you spot half a dozen Sathani? And which one had numerically more power? Notice anything? Excess kills a good atmosphere.
But that's just the Sath and Lucy- hardly the only thing that made the Shivans cool in FS1 and pointedly not in FS2. Well, actually, that's about it- other than their rather mysterious nature in the first game (they're less aliens than insurmountable galactic forces at work, whil in FS2 they're quite mortal, explained away to a dissapointing degree, and, well, just more sociopathic aliens), and the plenitude of interesting cutscenes in FS1 lacking in FS2 (what can I say? FreeSpace works better asa half-movie). But overall, I'd tend to say the Shivans WERE cool. Ah well...

:thepimp: Haven't smoked one of these in a while.
And yes, your message is sound! FS1 had everything better 'cept graphics. That's why I made the port. ;)

Shivans can be scary. Not fearful scary, but cool scary.
Like when you first see the Ravana. You only see the front part of it which is firing a million beams in your direction. First thought: RUN!

The Lucifer was indeed pretty neat to watch in the FS1 intro movie; it was huge compared to the Apollo and the Maticores chasing him. ;)
Their anti-fighter beams aren't very good, either.
You're right about that; the anti-fighter beams reload quite a bit faster, but they do only 5/14 of the damage per shot. :p

Yes, but the Shivans tend to use the harpoon#weak and hornet#weak missiles quite a bit in the missions. :p Also, the Hornet is already outdated by FS2 time and has gone out of production long before; they used those only because they had a lot of them left over. ;)
-
I think what made the Lucifer intimidating was the fact that after killing a big ship, it would jump out and leave you there, as if it was moving on and had more important things to worry about than a puny thing like you.
In Sathanas missions, a Sathanas appears and just stays there, waiting for you to run away from it.
Also the fact that the Lucifer was invincible and made it all the way to your home planet. :)
-
Yeah! Is there any kind of Shivan Reference? A summary of everything we know about them? Or maybe someone could post it? :D
-
Yeah, the Lucy was pretty scary when I first saw it jump in and nail the Galatea. What would make it a WHOLE lot better would be BFReds at the main guns! :D
A Sathanas in a FS2 movie would cause people to crap their pants if it was done right....... :shaking:  (here comes the... ahem.... Shivan "anal raping" beams......
The Colossus? Great against NTF, sucks against Shivans. You practrically do all the work when you have to destroy the big S. (wimpy captain :D)
Just bring the Psamtik behind the S, and watch Shivans die!
im done now............. :nervous: :doubt:

Uhhh, captain? You know what you doing?
-
"Uh... captain... the Shivan Juggernaut is jumping in from Gamma Draconis."
"Yeah. So?"
"I suggest we get on the other side of the node so we can get the juggernaut from behind."
"Shut up and let me drink my coffee."
"Sir..."
"What is it now?"
"A juggernaut just jumped in from the Capella star. It is powering up its beam cannons."
"Then kill it."
"It's bigger than us, sir. I suggest we jump out. We have done all we can for the Bastion."
"Nonsense! A few more seconds in which we 'hold them off' will make all the difference."
BOOM

The Poseidon.... errr, Colossus never really stood a chance against the Big S. If it weren't for the almighty Alpha One (:D), it would have been dead long ago........

Er, it has BFGreens (in 'High Noon', anyway). Without A1, it would be a real close fight.
The Colossus has most of its firepower on the sides, so if it had one side facing the Sathanas, it'll take and deal some considerable amount of damage, before finally getting to the Sathanas' side, at which point it wins. Alpha 1 didn't save the Colossus in 'High Noon'. Alpha 1 did, however, let the Colossus keep 100% hull.
The only reason the Colossus lost in 'Their Finest Hour' was that it didn't have BFGreens or engines, and it was down to ~40% hull. No jumping out, no taking out the Shivan juggernaut, and no surviving the blasts from said juggernaut. They had the Colossus using slashers for crying out f***ing loud. Of course it lost.
Another thing: If the Colossus were able to aim its beams well enough, it wouldn't need Alpha 1 at all, since it could simply take out the Sathanas' beams before wasting the rest of it. It certainly has enough firepower. However, if the Colossus were able to do this, surely the Sathanas could do the same to the Colossus.
-
Despite its limitations, the collosus was the only ship with BF greens, which were a huge advantage. The power of a BF green compaired was great to a normal B green, and even newer destroyers like a Hecate doesnt have many B greens.
The Collosus wouldnt have needed alpha 1 at all, if it had only positioned itself behind the sathanas in 'high noon'. Poor tactics, not a poor ship.

Hey, dont slag Poseidons, i got destroyed by one not that long ago.
Damn its pesky HL-7 turrets.
-
I actually tried modifying 'Their Finest Hour' the other day. Replaced the Colossus' BGreens and TerSlashes with LRBGreens. The damn thing slaughtered the Beast almost instantly (in about 3 seconds), and barely won against the Sathanas (it had 2% hull). It was one hell of a fight, too.
In other words, had 'Their Finest Hour' been a fair fight (Colossus has all LRBGreens and 100% hull and engines), that juggernaut would have been smoldering debris.
"The Ravana is going down, but we've sustained critical damage..." Uh, you mean it sustained critical damage, don't you? :D :D :D

Intresting, though didn't the origional collosus have BF greens, not LRBgreens?
If i could find the beam guide (think it's zylobanes) it tell u whether it made much difference.

Volition changed the Colossus's weapons in High Noon to LRBGreen, the rest of the time, the thing is using BGreens (The real centerpiece of the GTVA ay?)

Turns out they both do the same damage overall so i suppose it doesnt matter.
Oh and thanks karajorma for the link.
Wow BF Reds are powerfull :jaw:

Actually BFGreen and LRBGreen are identical, with the exception that LRBGreen has twice the range of BFGreen.
