Title: OI! LISTING OF FREE ****! Frick the System: Internet Version
Post by: Stryke 9 on April 07, 2002, 12:59:23 am
OK, since I'm pretty sure none of you have ever heard of **** the System, I'll give you a rundown. Old, old booklet on how to get anything and everything without paying for it, and without the pigs busting down your door. Nice and handy, when you're strapped for cash. And it's time for a second edition. List your free goodies, put up a short descrip, include as direct a link as humanly possible. And make sure, if they're a demo version, that they more or less work (as in, you'd look at the end product).

Photoshop filters, modeler plugins, programs of a graphical persuasion, go. I'll put up an example momentarily.

And no, your commentary on almost entirely unrelated matters is not appreciated, unless you come bearing links.

VDL Photoshop Plugins  (http://www.v-d-l.com/up.html)

Also here (http://www.v-d-l.com/adrenaline_nightvision.html) and here (http://www.v-d-l.com/adrenaline_harmonix.html). Fairly impressive freeware plugins, nothing to base a render on, but then again, nothing that could hurt to have handy. These are somewhat less popular than the ubiquitous Flaming Pear (http://www.flamingpear.com/) plugins, but some are better, none have time limitations, and I know the Nightvision was pretty impressive when I dug it up the first time.;)
That, and the waveform one kicks ass in a serious way when properly utilized.

Adobe Photoshop not included.

The Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/)
Who needs Photoshop, anyway?
PHPEdit (www.phpedit.com)
A more civillized editor for a, well, less civillized age. :D

I stole these from wEvil (however links were added by me):

Free Rendering Programs:

Brazil 0.2.6 (beta, but very functional if a little slow) http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/
BRMT (Renderman compliant renderer ,precursor to entropy. get it at www.exluna.com)
the one that comes with yer program (duh)
Vray beta (another GI renderer for MAX) http://www.chaoticdimension.com/news/

Free Best Soft Internet! (http://wwwkostaki.chat.ru/bp.htm)

Inhumanly slow. In Russian and what appears to be Engrish. It's like an online garage sale- it seems to contain links to literally everything on the Internet (from Windows XP beta version to DivX 4.0) that looks interesting, but not QUITE good enough to go and download. Sometimes you find a gem, I dunno.

Also, the bad translations are worth a trip on their own.:D

NOTE: The main list is all broken link, but is a good reference if you wanna track it yourself. The Russian (http://wwwkostaki.chat.ru/index.htm) side for the indexes, the Engrish-like (http://wwwkostaki.chat.ru/indexxx.htm) side so you know roughly what you're looking at.

3DMaxer  (http://www.3dmaxer.dk/default.asp)

Dutch org. Apparently, all free goodies for 3DS MAX. I can't tell, tho, since I have yet to break any in. (psst, you StarCraft whiners! If you read Dutch, one of the members modeled your damn BattleCruiser!)

Also, Hair  (http://www.3dlinks.com/Shop/shaghair.cfm). You know, for when you really want hairy models. Also 3DS Max, I think it's a 3-day demo.

Anyone know of a Steakā„¢ Render Glow 8BF plugin or something that produces that type of effect? That would be very nice. ;) Anyway, here is what I can find at the moment:

Irfanview: The best program I have seen for image viewing; it is fast, powerful and supports just about every format out there
http://www.irfanview.com

Terragen: A nice outdoor terrain render program comparable to Bryce; I haven't explored it much yet but my brother uses it a lot
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen

Universe: A nice program for making starfields and stuff; the shareware version can only do some effects, but most of the important ones are there (except for the lens flare, which is the best I have seen)
http://www.diardsoftware.com

Glitterato / LunarCell / SolarCell : Photoshop/PSP plugins for making space backgrounds; Glitterato and LunarCell make some cool effects if tweaked around a bit
http://www.flamingpear.com

Goldwave: A great sound editor; it is shareware but the only limit is a screen that pops up at the beginning.
http://www.goldwave.com

Winamp: Probably the best standard (non-mod) audio player around; very good equalizer and
http://www.winamp.com

Modplug Player / Modplug Tracker : A very nice audio player for mod-based files, similar to winamp but for mod's. The tracker program is a mod music editor; I haven't done much with it but have seen some very impressive stuff designed by it.
http://www.modplug.com

And one of my favorites: :D

GrafEq: Really, really good program for graphing 2D implicit relations; the only program I have seen yet that correctly graphs hyperexponential functions. If it supported infinite sums and diff equations I would have registered it... (although the only limit in the free version is a pop-up every ten minutes)
http://www.peda.com

That's about all the legal stuff I have.

That Other Starfield Prog (http://216.147.85.26/emm/astroscape/index.htm). Shareware, full version, but I don't know that it's the nicest around.

Anyone got the TrueSpace 1 link?

Truespace 1 (http://www.pcplus.co.uk/article.asp?ID=8556): needed for freespace conversion and such.

Lightwave2Terragen (http://www.spatial-design.com/plugins/lw2tg/lw2tgDownload.htm)
Basically makes Terragen a terrain generator for Lightwave. Demo.

Basic Lightwave plugins (http://amber.rc.arizona.edu/lw/)
Terrain generator, decimation tool, all sorts of handy stuff.

I'll toss you TrueSpacers a bone (http://www.norfolkgraphics.com/free.php3) with this site, which has a handful of (very) basic demo plugins, and then a fair-sized goddamn steak with a big-assed links page (http://www.lunadude.com/rsrc_trueSpace.htm).

Also, bone TS models (http://www.blackknightproductions.com/puppeteerv2.htm), if you dig that sort of thing.

Anyone got a free sound editor?

Metasequoia (http://www1.sphere.ne.jp/mizno/main_e.html)
Free modeling prog. See the page for information- it looks decent in general.

Anim8or (http://www.anim8or.com/main/index.html)
About the same, looks slightly less tasty, but you can't be picky with freeware...

Miscellaneous Progs (http://www.webattack.com/freeware/gmm/fw3d.shtml)
A listing of all sorts of various modelers, all freeware. Some good stuff, this. Includes POVray and a decent-looking Terragen clone.

Ey, moderators- how 'bout making this a sticky or summat? I keep seeing people who HAVE to be going past this thread to be making their posts begging for free ****.

Shows what you get for just being a little creative in titling...:D

Not really - if it dies it dies, you can just point them to it when it's needed - perhaps if you make a page with all this info people can link to that?

1. I'm being helpful, but not to the extent that uit overrides my supreme laziness. I sure as hell ain't gonna refer 500 noobs to a thread which'll get deleted in a month or so.:D

2. You haven't been listening to me ***** enough, Thunder! The computer holding my internet accounts got hit with a compound virus, and it took my FTP account information more or less permanently with it. Otherwise, hell, I'd be too busy flooding the forums with TAC mods right now to make this.

Well they're not graphics orientated programs but two of the most useful freeware programs I use are the excellent pegasus mail and the equally great SmartFTP.

Pegasus mail   -   www.pmail.com
SmartFTP         -   www.smartftp.com

I have yet to try out UV mapper (Aldo uses it wth pretty spectacular results you will agree) but here's the link:

UVmapper        -   www.uvmapper.com

Lastly a program I hold in high regard is the Blade MP3 encoder. It's simple, small and chock full of options. Getting it is a bit of a pain though since it's been banned almost everywhere but if anyone wants a copy gimme a shout and I'll send it pronto ;)

Ditto that and... it's FREE! :D

Goldwave: (http://www.goldwave.com/) A supposedly useful sound editor, free. Haven't used it much...

xIRCcon: (http://www.xircon.com) One of the best IRC clients IMHO :)

Satori PhotoXL at TUCOWS: (http://www.tucows.com/mmedia/preview/251253.html) A nice image editor, a demo.

TUCOWS: (http://www.tucows.com) A useful download site, has always worked when I needed it.

AAGH! It's mutating!

We had a beautiful and useful thing going here for a short while. Read the rules. If you're gonna post, actually HAVE a useful link, don't just say "(X program) is A-1 SUPAR!" or any of that crap, and don't post links that are already prominently displayed on here. Come on, really. What good are 200 links to Goldwave, if they drown out everything else? This is useful as a reference as a dead topic- it's worthless if it disintegrates into crap like every other topic on HLP. User board rules, just this once, OK? Don't take a verbal **** in the topic just because you won't get in trouble for it.

On that note: A whole heap o' freeware and model links.

Spline Editors! (hamaPatch) (http://www.geocities.com/hamapatch/program/index.html)
Modelers! (Amabilis) (http://www.amabilis.com/)
Beta-Level converters!(Crossroads) (http://home.europa.com/~keithr/crossroads/)
Models n' ****! (http://www.modmed.com/)

Next person who craps in here gets a whuppin'. At least use a find function to see what's already on here!

Crap-o-meter getting high. I'm pissed. Seriously.

OK, now this isn't a prog link as such, but you can get TS5, Photoshop, 3DSMAX and nearly any other full versions if your conn is fast enough and you have the patience to look>> www.kazaa.com is a file sharing prog, you dont have to share any of yours, but it helps others if you do. get desktop client.  www.neo-modus.com is anothe rsite hosting DIRECT CONNECT, but you have to host over 2 gig of stuff to be allowed to get any good stuff. (for the more hardcore apps users out there).

Stryke. As the shepard said "calm the flock down!!".

This is all pretty useful stuff, I don't see any probs with how this thread is running. Anyone who puts up a "yeah that proggie is cool" post just adds more weight to the apps value.

BTW guys no linking to private FTP's, you may as well be posting warez. This is a good thread, keep it up
Title: Frick the System: Internet Version
Post by: Stryke 9 on May 04, 2002, 01:32:04 pm
Maeg: Possibly. But most people can tell when a prog is crap and when not by looking at the specs. And this isn't the first time I've started a thread like this. They're susceptible to crap, and 40 people saying things like "Goldwave is teh ****!" is worthless if nobody else ever posts another link. Comment away, but find something to add to the list first. Thus, if anyone has anything actually substantive enough to say that they're willing to run a search for it, can post away. Those who want to blather can go to one of the dead topics. It's not hard- I've been just running all my links off a Copernic search, after picking out the ones that I can confirm actually HAVE something worth listing.

And sometimes, I find a little something for me. Like a ton of texes, for when I've exhausted FS's VP potentials. (http://www.grsites.com/textures/)

In fact, I'm going to display my irritation by failing to find a freeware link to go with this post.
