Title: Callsigns on capital ships, how to get them working?
Post by: Spoon on November 06, 2009, 08:01:59 am
They work fine when used on fighters but when I give a capital ship a Callsign it doesn't show up when a message is send from it. I tried giving it an alt name but then the normal ship name will still show up in messages.
Bug, or am I doing something wrong?

Capital ships don't use callsigns.

Yeah, but the possibility would make it useful, no?

Capital ships don't use callsigns.
Right, well. In my campaign they do.
But right now there is no way to properly have an alternative name in messages when the source is a capital ship, aside from changing the name of the ship itself. (which looks odd on the hud) or am I missing something?

Sure there is. Say you want your warship's callsign to be 'Admiral Calder'.

Just set the message source in FRED as #Admiral Calder.

Now, you won't get the silver brackets around the warship, unfortunately. But it is a viable workaround.

I kinda want the silver brackets though. For some reason makes it feel more like that person is actually on that ship. Instead of some mysterious being communicating at 1000 light years away, so to speak  :p
Is there like a coding reason why cap ships don't have working callsigns like fighters?

There's a design reason.  The callsign code isn't only used for messages; it's used for the escort list and communications menu as well.  A lot of that stuff only makes sense for single-person ships.

I see, didn't knew about the communications menu/escort list.

Guess i'll just have to work around it then...

YOu can still have the callsign in the Alt Name box, and just have all parties refer to it as said callsign.  Irritating sometime, but it works.

I STILL WANT a feature that allows me to not override ship and escort ship names and callsigns.

:nervous:

Idea.  Make the ship's default name the Callsign, and the Alt Name to its real name.

That's what i'm using right now, looks kinda wierd when you target a friendly fighter to see "Guarding General napoleon" on the targeting info though  :p

You do.  It just only works for fighters and bombers.

Admiral Petrarch isn't the ONLY person on the Aquitaine, for example.  Why should the Aquitaine have a callsign?
