Title: Murdoch To Cut Own Throat

Quote
Rupert Murdoch has said he will try to block Google from using news content from his companies.

The billionaire told Sky News Australia he will explore ways to remove stories from Google's search indexes, including Google News.

Mr Murdoch's News Corp had previously said it would start charging online customers across all its websites.

He believes that search engines cannot legally use headlines and paragraphs of news stories as search results.

"There's a doctrine called 'fair use', which we believe to be challenged in the courts and would bar it altogether," Mr Murdoch told the TV channel. "But we'll take that slowly."

Mr Murdoch announced earlier this year that the websites of his news websites would begin charging for access.

The target had been for all its sites to charge by June next year, but indications are that this is now unlikely.

News Corp owns the Times and Sun newspapers in the UK and the New York Post and Wall Street Journal in the US.

Newspapers across the world are considering the best way to make money from the internet, particularly in a time of falling advertising revenues.

The risk is that charges may alienate readers who have become used to free content and deter advertisers.

We can only hope he starts charging for Fox News too and prices himself completely out of the market. :p

He has enough money to keep it up for a while even if they hemorrhage money, and it's going to be a devastating attack on Net Neutrality regardless.

I really think this is a bit much.  Blocking news websites from popular search engines doesn't help students when they're given an assignment where they are expected to find a news report related to a given subject.  And charging for access to a news website is just asking for trouble...

If you somehow consider anything owned by Rupert Murdoch to be a legitimate news organization and not just the blight on the field of journalism that it is.

I can only hope this goes through.  People don't need to be getting their "news" from Fox anyway.

And bad kara!  You got my hopes up that he was actually going to cut his jugular :p

You're massively overgeneralizing there. Newscorp owns the Australian, which does have some right wing leanings, but is generally a pretty solid broadsheet, especially if your interests dovetail with what it covers preferentially, which mine quite often tend to.

Fair enough.  I may just be scarred by Fox and the NYP.

I understand what he's saying to mean he doesn't believe Fair Use is, like, legal? Or is it that he doesn't think what Google is doing is fair use? Or something completely different?

What does he want to do next? Jab peoples eyes out in newsagents for browsing? Or god forbid . . . . Read a paper over somebodies shoulder on the train.

Quick point, when I first saw this topic I immediately thought of mad dog.

Is this the same guy that wanted to charge by the word for quotes and linking to articles as citations?

Interesting when you consider how much stuff the Murdoch corps copy almost word for word from other sources...

As I see it, this is more a scheme to get one of the secondline search providers (Like Microsofts bing) to pay for an exclusive deal to index that content. Not that anyone using Google to read news will switch to another service just to read Murdoch items....

This is a good thing. If it's harder to access, stupid people wont see it anymore.

You shouldn't read the news anyway.  You should watch it.  That way you can tell when the journalists are lying.  You can see their lips move.
