Title: How to ego boost?
Post by: Mars on November 09, 2009, 09:53:38 pm
Perhaps this is a silly question. I've just noticed I've been down on myself lately, with no real reason (I just can't blame it on quitting smoking, because I've done that before, to much less effect). What to the rest of you do when this occurs?

I just decided at the start of September to be friendly to strangers, help out old friends, and its worked out quite well thus far, really gave my ego a boost.

Take up an athletic, competitive sport or start running or something. I swear, it really helps a lot.

This is my problem, I am. I've been racing for a month and a half now. I'm in pretty awesome shape, have great friends . . .

and I feel like a douche all the time. I'm really very confused by it.

Relapsing gives me a temporary ego boost. But that's about the least useful advice that is going to occur in this thread.

I take drives at night or I'll spend time sitting people watching for a while.

Something that is quiet but not too boring

'Tis not a silly question, this is perfectly respectable. :)

Everything mentioned so far is good, especially exercise which works wonders, but if that/diet/friends are not an issue, then my guess is that perhaps there is something deeper down that you feel is missing from your life, or maybe things are not going in the direction or speed that you would like them to.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, instead of trying to find a 'quick fix' for your spirits, take a moment to comtemplate the source of the trouble, and try to work from there.

My two cents, anyway.

I take drives at night
I do this as well when I feel down.  And as cheesy as it sounds I find taking a hike through natural wilderness (assuming it is accessible) is great for the spirits. :)

Stick with the exercise, eat well, and be nice to people, even if you feel like a creep.

You reap what you sow, in more ways than one.

Odds are you are feeling guilty about something subconciously.  Something you said or did that maybe didn't mean a damn thing and you are obsessing over it.

Course this means **** coming from me, but whatever.

/me doesn't have time to read the whole thing in detail so skims.

In short i'd say be a bit selfish one day, see how that goes for ya. I don't mean go around stealing from kids or old people. I just mean FOCUS. . ON. . YOU. (The original definition of the word no less) pick out something you're good at and remember good moments. Try to remember times you were on top of your game and how that made you feel. Do that a few times a day and you should be able to pull that feeling out of thin air after a while.

Failing that. . . Valium.

Drink heavily.

Might not actually help, but at least you'll be drunk.

Do something you're good at. And get better. People ask me why I do pistol shooting, considering in my neighborhood there's just no chance I'll ever be call on that experience for protection of life or property. Well, the first reason is because I can't find a decent rifle range, but the second is because I'm good at it, so I like it.

A couple of others have suggested it but sometimes you have to have a "ME DAY".  Do something out of the ordinary, something that is fun for you, and make that day largely about you serving you. Not everyone but some people such as myself spend quit a bit of time internalizing and making everyone else their concern... not always a healthy thing so when I get down I try and focus on me for a bit.

That might be all you need... maybe you need to hang out with a couple of close friends and get some stuff off your chest... I don't know.  Something might be bothering you that you haven't considered as well.  People are still partially driven by instinct... depending on your stage in life you may be feeling a fairly deep need for something (don't go off the rails on me people... minds out of the gutter!).

Find something that gives you a rush and push your limits. (Similar to what NGTM-1R said.) I personally love to mountain bike and freeski (Snow). I find that not only am I stoked to be progressing, it allows me to forget about whatever **** is going on and just feel the rush of whatever it is I'm doing.

lol, it definitely took a lot out of me, but it was only the first of many I hope. I figure I should do a lot now while I'm 20, my grandfather could do 5ks through his 80s, but I don't know how long I'll be able to run this fast and this long.

I'm mostly racing at 5K now, some 10Ks. I honestly don't know how people race in marathons, but hope to find out before too long.

nihilism is kinda like the game (which i just lost). if you try to be a nihilist, youve already failed. dieing would work, but only if you werent really trying.

Do you consider yourself . . . post-human?  :wtf:
replace post with anti

I did the half marathon with someone else, it took a while, and I'm not counting the time honestly.

My mile is 6:30, my 5K is 23:40, my 10K was 2 hours - I need to do some speedwork and endurance no doubt.
Title: Re: How to ego boost?

My 13 miles was one hour forty two minutes. I can pull a mile out at seven minutes easily. 6 30 would make me puff.

That's a pretty decent pace. I mostly do shorter stuff like between 600m and 3k. (I'm currently trying for a sub 2:00 km) But I can pull out a 45 minute 10k if I really kill myself. normally I'm closer to an hour when I do it for fun.

I only remember those times because, hey its half a marathon :) and the other because of BPFT requirements.

So how's the ego doing by the way? Self confident much, come on man get out of the rut.

yeah, but it only take one lazy  :doubt: to do it, class is as fast as slowest member.
I've done that distance in 5:02 w/hill

The ego is doing alright. I suspect my problems have to do with a case of the unrequiteds with my best friend XD

That being said, if I just concentrate on other things I should be fine.

I can sometimes be crictical on myself, from time to time, but.. Looking within yourself for the answer is probably the best solution, it may take some time though.

Also, examine problems from a distance, I know it is hard to do when thoughts race wildly in your mind, but try it.

Also, remember that someone out there really cares about you, turn to them for advice. I know this to be true, just ask my wife of 24 years. My best friend, lover and soulmate.

God bless you Patricia.  :D
