Title: Just finished it and...
Post by: Narwhal on November 14, 2009, 12:03:41 pm
... it is great. Finished it in Insane until the mission Return to Ross XXX, then in Hard. Great storyline, even though it looks a bit hasted at the end, overall nice voicing, some missions I will always remember (he who rides the tiger, of course) and all missions are "original" in some way (=different from your standart FS mission). Well, great job. For me, it is the new Canon over the released ST.

Two minor problems for me :
- The "shocked" Vasudan in the mission where the GTI runs a blockade killed immersion. I disliked that. Quickly forgotten, though. The mission is one of the best, apart from that part.
- The last mission is not on par with all the others. I found it rather dull.  Even the voicing was not that good. Of course, still better than the Volition ST finale. As a side note, the first time I "almost finish it", I blowed up just after sending the last missile which blew the Hades up itself, the second time, I was hit by the Orion as it was jumping out... lots of stress, went down from 60% to 12%... but survived. I would have destroyed my computer else. Way to treat an hero, girl !

Also, if anyone interested, I can do a mission-by-mission reporting :)

Thanks for your comments. :)

The voicing is exactly the same in that mission as in all the others. :p

But some other people have said the last mission is not as exciting.  How would you improve it?

I agree a lot there. I found it funny but IMO it doesn't fit in a srs campaign liek STR.

I think the problem is that the Hades as a lots of health to destroy. This means that at some point, the player is going to sit somewhere relatively safe and send missile after missile while calling support. Did someone found another strategy ?
On the other hand, if you try to send the player around to save GTA assets or anything else, chances are that the player will blow up. After 10 minutes or more playing, this would seriously piss the player off. And it is tough to have dialogues for 10 minutes.

I have not thought about how to solve this conondrum a lot. My general solution would be "much more easy provided you do a much more" : if the player is sitting somewhere, it is bound to fail, but provided the player react to new information, it could change a lot. The following suggestions are quick ideas, don't use all of them at the same time :) Or use none.

Add "micro-events" like the arrival of the Orff, but sometimes tipping the game in favor of the players, sometimes in favor of the GTI. The members of the GTI infiltrated in the GTA would try everything  to derail the operation : squadron of reinforcement turning against the GTA, some Fenris and Leviathan attacking the Orion (in exchange, limit the number of Zeus the Hades send). This way, the player has something else to do rather than shooting megabombs at the Hades. And taking the Zeus for quick response rather than heavier bombers would be a viable option (I took an Ursa). This way, the player would either choose the strategy "everything on the Hades" or the strategy "everything to protect what can send stuff to the Hades". You could even randomize the order of those events so for once the player does not count of his pre-knowledge of the mission to destroy the Leviathan the moment it jumps in.

Allow the player to choose when to call the Orff. Calling a Cruiser in reinforcement is damn funny, so the player would call it only when he has destroyed the beam on the side opposite to the Orion.

Make it impossible for the player to shoot from "inside" the structure of the Hades (lots of place to hide from the Lokis), for instance with an "EMP field" when the players get too close. In exchange, add some fighters on the player side, since he is going to be exposed a lot. (Actually, make the Alphas and Betas that can blow up repop).

When the Hades is at 10%, make it jump out, with a Red Alert mission in subspace. Of course, problem is that it would look like a little too much like the final of FS, so I don't know.

Last suggestion : right now the order of destroying stuff on the Hades is forced on the player  : first the beams, then maybe the Weapon Syst, and then everything else. Maybe in the briefing give every "part" of the Hades a role, for instance : destroying communication would either stop reinforcement coming from outside or allow player reinforcements to come (once), Nav would destroy the EMP field I mentionned, some other place would allow the player to target the Lokis (before that, a strong jamming device hampers it), etc. Probably a little too tough to FRED.

As for the voicing, I know you cannot change it now, but I think the voice of the girl lacks conviction and intonation at the beginning of the mission. After ... well was busy calling support so could not hear what she said.

Well, the ending can't really be changed. The Hades has to be in Normal Space to reconcile events with the shootd of it lying on the surface of that Deneb planet in FS2

No, I like this idea. Give bonuses for each subsystem destroyed. :)

I agree that this last mission was a little "sitting somewhere and blast harbingers on the thing" for 10 minutes. It lacks epic somewhat.

As I understand, the FS2 custscenes are not to be considered proper canon, as they were developed by Interplay, not :v:.

One mission I'll always remember is when the shivans take over the Faustus (can't remember the actual name, it's been what feels like a year since I played) and one supposedly latches on to your ship. That was andrenaline-spiking. :D

Well, I think we can consider everything in the cutscenes that doesn't contradict with :v: canon materials as canon. Think like "we take what we don't see elsewhere in the game, and drop the rest"
And the original ST being the most bullsh** canon material ever, I understand that FS2 cutscenes may be considered as more canon than ST in some extent. That's arguable though.
Title: Re: Just finished it and...
Post by: Goober5000 on November 16, 2009, 10:08:39 pm
I think the consensus is that everything released by :v: is canon, but that then means the canon is inconsistent and self-contradictory.  So people assign different precedences to different sections of the game.  Most people treat FS2 as superseding FS1, for example.  And most people treat missions as superseding cutscenes or the tech room.

Any plan to change the last mission ? Just to know whether I will ever replay the campaign. And plain curiosity, too :)
I suppose it would necessite new Voice Acting, so it is a now, but Galemp hinted that he liked the idea.

No current plans.

However, there are some AI bugs in FSO that have recently been fixed.  Try playing the mission again; you may find it a different experience. :)

I have just finished the mission too and I should say that for sure I couldn't find a safe place to sit down even playing in easy mode.  :shaking:
Of course after being blew up by the Hades the first time I started to hit the afterburner when its hull got to 3%.   :P

The voice acting is very good and the mission are truly well done and challenging, you did a great job!

I don't know with the new IA, but with the former "version", the safe spot was actually as far as possible from the center of the Hades, while being in range, i.e. well "above" the structure that peaks above the rest of the hull : (spot A in the following ASCII)

You are too far away for the fighters to pay attention to you, and you can be safe provided you destroy a couple AA defense.

Yes, but how do I take out the bombers (and the Bombs) in that way?
Wouldn't I be a bit out of range?
Title: Re: Just finished it and...

For the bombers : you tell the friendly wings to do it for you.
For the range : You try to be just at range of the closest structure. Few fighters will attack you and you ll dispatch them with your missiles if one goes on you.

I remember that when I was bombing the beam turret on the highest structure from above I had 2 or 3 Lokis after me.  :nervous:

Well, you might have a few Lokis at the beginning, but once they start repoping, if you are far enough from the Hades (you are), they will have better targets (as in "closer targets") than you, so you will only have a random Loki from time to time.

As I said, I did it with the former IA.

A few days ago I finished it and I must say it really is much better That original campaign. one thing I wanted to comment to avoid having to create multiple pilots in so I put MOD.INI secondarylist = fsport, mediavps, fsport-awakenings, fsport-cardinalspear, fsport-destinyofpeace, fsport_vi;, but when I play fsport-awakenings, fsport-cardinalspear , fsport-destinyofpeace, fsport_vi the selects from the launcher, because if I select them from the screen campaigns Silent Threat: Reborn (with the MOD.ini changed), it show up warning not found some classes of ships, and things happen funny as in the third mission of Awakenings, has to load a big spaceship and the tiny ship load underside.

This is a bad idea. A very, very bad idea. Don't do it.

In general you can keep the same pilot across multiple campaigns so long as those campaigns use the same mod; for instance, you can keep the same pilot for Blue Planet: Age of Aquarius and War in Heaven, or for FreeSpace Port: The Great War, Silent Threat Reborn, and Vasudan Imperium. Cardinal Spear has additional ships and weapons not found in stock FSPort so you'll want another pilot for that.

I know this because when I wanted to go to these campaigns, meaning through silent threat, he appeared mistakes, but if I changed the MOD.ini back to its original state. In this computer for me and my brother play, and we have too many pilots, we Reach the max number, and That Was the reason for the change in the mod.ini. but I discovered that the pilot that i use on the silent threat I can use it in other campaigns (, fsport-awakenings, fsport-cardinalspear, fsport-destinyofpeace, fsport_vi) just that when I enter any of the mods i have to go to Campaign the room and select the campaign. Sorry for the long post and my disastrous English

OK, so you have restored the mod.ini and now you're using the same pilot for all the FSPort campaigns, right? Good.

My native language is Spanish. Another question From where I can download the 3.1.1 Fsport mediavp Because the link on these topics say they are for the Fsport 3.1.1 (fsport-mediavps) (3,6,10 mediavps) But when you download them and read the readme  you realize that they are for Fsport version 3.2 (3,6,12 mediavps)? The reason for my question is I play Fsport THROUGH ST: R and ST: R shows 68 warnings with the Fsport 3.2 mediavps. and i want to play ST:R with FSport Mediavps.

Topics that say they are for Fsport 3.1.1 (3.6.10 Mediavps)
