I just signed up after finding this site.
A 3D cockpit is very important to me too... but since this post is from 2002, I too doubt this feature will ever make it in. It would really be awesome if it would...

Sometimes, I am quite surprised at things like this. People take the time to look for things, find a thread that is ages old, and think that bumping it with an implied question like yours is OK.
FYI, Cockpits can be made to show. While there is currently no good way for fully working cockpits, with working displays and such, you should check out some of the promo videos released by the End Project people or the Diaspora team, those will show you what IS possible.
All of which you could have been told without committing the forum etiquette faux pas of necrothreading. If you have questions, and you can't find answers quickly, feel free to create a new thread. Or use the IRC channel.

Then that's my request... fully working cockpit displays... but it would seem people are already working on it. So.. great :)

Nuke came close to what you'd like to see using scripting, his cockpit demo should be available somewhere on the forums.
He's also working on improving it.

Tha vasudan ships you fly could have terran cockpit. With just a LITTLE bit of Vasudan. After all, they ar Modified for terrans.
They wouldn't need to be very heavily modified, especially in 2367 when technology is much more integrated. The seat would be adjusted to be higher and closer to the instrument panel, the instruments' readouts would be translated into English, and perhaps a different flight stick would be fitted. That's all you really need considering both species have a similar body plan. Now a Shivan fighter would require a whole new cockpit, possibly with a camera system like Ace Combat 3's COFFIN for seeing out of it.

Except that it is ongoing in several other places already. Besides, ATM, we know what is needed to get it all working, but unfortunately, it is a non-trivial task. It involves rewriting the rendering engine basically from scratch, a task that is necessary, but will most likely involve a rewrite of significant parts of the entire engine. So, in summary, it is something that will take a long time yet, unless some OpenGL wizard joins the team.
Now, getting the HUD gauges fully modular, and fully retargetable, will take some time, and could even be done in the current engine, but it takes coders, of which there aren't many.
