Title: Models giveaway
Post by: SolCommand on December 11, 2009, 05:53:20 pm
Hey guys.

A few years ago I was working on a mod that was supposed to be a complete overhaul for Freelancer but somehow after a wile the project closed due to lack of enough ppl in the team. During that time I created a number of models that were supposed to get textured and imported in the game but unfortunately they never made it.
A couple of months ago I remembered about the game when I was browsing on a gaming site for new combat scifi games to play and realized I still have those models on a usb stick somewhere ... I found it after a wile searching all around the house and thought it would be cool if I give all these models to the community, maybe someone will find a use for some of them, who knows. Anyway I released my models for public download on another Freelancer community website( The Starport) and since then I've created some more, some even textured. There are about 70 or more models available for download, most are WIPs and they're in 3DS and OBJ format. You can use them for any mod/game you wish.

You can preview some of my models on my blog:
http://solcommand.blogspot.com/ (http://solcommand.blogspot.com/)

And you can download them all from here:
http://digitalbrilliance.org/SC/
or
http://cid-5d0715049236d05b.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/.Public (http://cid-5d0715049236d05b.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/.Public)

I also make models on request if you really really need a model but I'm involved in many projects atm so my time is limited, thus I may or may not take your project. If you decide to contact me, you can do it at >the starport< (http://the-starport.net/).

Thank you for your time and enjoy my models

Wow, quite some good stuff in there. And most of them aren't even warships; indeed, good civilian/industrial models are all too rare (at least in the FS community). Awesome job :)

Wow. And thanks a lot. Like FSF said, there is a lot of potentially good stuff in there.

I'd love some screenshots of the models ingame if you decide to use some of them

Cool.

It seems you have a sort of story going. Why don't you think about putting this in FS?

I second that idea.

And I love that Human Destroyer/Battleship thing.  Looks really cool.

Here's a destroyer I just made along the lines of my Human Warship and Cobra fighter:

I really like the Anna, it looks like a great Terran-Vasudan hybrid along the lines of the old Great War-era Vasudan freighters.

I'm very excited at the prospect of getting some of these small stations ingame. I already have a boatload of texturing to do though :(

Still, very useful resource if someone can texture them.

Decided I'd a quick vid of the ship, it's not perfect but will do :) The ship is not always centered and sometimes it moves too fast but ... that's life lolz

I Downloaded the Anna V and... as much as I  like the ship (As Galemp said, it'd go great as a Vasudan freighter circa FS1 or earlier), but I have to know, what on earth did you do to that texture? It looks like you maybe painted it on on a 3d paint program and then autoexported the UV? Because it's massively inefficient - I had a look at the numbers in PSP and something like 79.8% of your texture file is unused space. To put that into context, the UV file I'm texturing at the moment has around 15.5% unusued space. In other words, even with a reasonably inefficient UV Map (unitilizing, say 75% of the mapspace) You could get exactly the same amount of detail into a 1024x1024 map - a quarter of the current size. Also, as it stands now, making a shine or bump map for it would be very difficult.

The way it's done also means that it makes the texture look very pixellated, even at relatively forgiving zooms (ingame you tend to get quite close to ships in order to scan/take out turrets etc, so pixellation issues would become more serious.

So, yeah, I guess it's more a suggestion for the future than anything that's likely to be able to be changed for the Anna V at this point, but keeping your UV maps efficient would be a good habit to get into generally.

Otherwise, I want to again mention how much I like having all these small stations. Once I'ved finished my current projects (which I've been motivated to speed up now :)) I will probably be UVing and texturing at least one or two of these.

I know of the texture issue and it's already been solved starting with my latest model. I may go back and solve it on the Destroyer also when I'll find time

Can you export to the Collada DAE format? I tried importing the Shey Ke capship into Blender, and it looks like below; the DAE importer is more reliable.

Done -> converted to OBJ and DAE format. Note that I've never converted to dae format before so i do not know what settings I need to apply to convert properly. You should try OBJ if dae does not work.

Hmm, the DAE didn't work (said something about a "NoneType" object not having an attribute "split") - but the OBJ worked fine. Thanks a lot :)

I finished remaking the Anna-V Destroyer couple of days ago.
Changes consist of :
- removed the plate with the name of the ship
- removed some solar panels
- small texture changes
- rearranged UVs

ALSO, the destroyer now comes with 20 texture variations. The preview is way to big to post here so you can >> see it if you click this link << (http://public.blu.livefilestore.com/y1phUhM6VImSm6NlfErt6RGNZYjN9SlrlrNDIPDQALxfIJ-AwfwcaTrbPAc5AJuquvZ7KjCEBo6AlQqpGZC50OALA/Anna_variations.jpg).
Took me 10 hours to bake all these textures  :o

This is the final version of the destroyer, if you still think the texture file could be better, feel free create your own custom texture that would fit better with your mod :) as I've already started working on another model.

Download the model here:

The very last one looks quite Vasudan-y.

EDIT: Actually on closer inspection, for a Vasudan model, the previous model would probably be better suited.
Title: Re: Models giveaway
Post by: Hades on January 05, 2010, 06:31:13 pm
The last one is too boxy to be Vasudan, however, with the right texture, it would be very good for a Terran ship.

Well, I haven't taken too good a look at the model in question, but I will state that FS1 Vasudan ships are considerably more angular than FS2 craft. Having a Great War-era Vasudan "brick" wouldn't be uncalled for.

Well, if you go by the concept art, they were aiming for streamlined and curvy ships, very much like the Aten, Typhon, and the FreeSpace 2 Vasudan ships, some examples:
The PVFr Ma'at, a canon Vasudan freighter...
The GVF Tauret, a canon Vasudan fighter (this is actually a FreeSpace 1 concept art)...
At the very top, the PVT Isis (which looks like it was originally supposed to be more of a shuttle than anything.)
There's also the Thoth concept art, but I haven't uploaded it to the wiki as I have the above concepts yet.

Not exactly.

Even the examples you gave aren't wholly organic or completely smoothed - Both of them incorporate mechanical elements as well as angular shapes, but in a very alien way.

What IMHO really epitomizes Vasudan ship design in FS1 would be the PVFr Satis - crudely mechanical, inferior to Terran ships, but aesthetically organic, almost as if the engineers who designed it were trying to hide its mechanical elements with organic design.

SolCommand, may I say how utterly amazing these models are. I've been frequently checking them all out on your site ever since FSF pointed me at it a short while back. They are high quality and just original in their own way. Keep this up!

I hope you wouldn't mind FSF and me using the Shey Ke Capital Ship, Cargo Ship and Human Warship for my Cerberus campaign revitalisation? They would form the major part of a new faction I'm creating, which we've slowly but steadily begun bringing to life. FSF's is already performing texture surgery on the Capital Ship and it just looks incredible.

Title: Re: Models giveaway
Post by: FreeSpaceFreak on January 22, 2010, 01:32:19 am
Having them all at once converted to OBJ would be handy :nervous: There's much good stuff in there, and OBJ would make all of it easily accessible for Blender users.
Title: Re: Models giveaway
Post by: starwolf1991 on January 22, 2010, 03:29:18 am
I agree. It would make it easier for Blender users.

Could we get the Security Vessel and Dax Transporter converted, you know like the Shey Ke stuff was? I'd like to use both those vessels to fill two important places in my faction's fleet. Then, I think my faction may be complete, for now at least.
Title: Re: Models giveaway
Post by: SolCommand on January 22, 2010, 09:45:20 am
All the old models are in 3DS format. The newer ones are in OBJ since I learned more ppl can use it . Maybe when I'll find time these days I'll convert them all in OBJ  ;)

Awwww noes!

Well, I do hope you're able to convert the security vessel and dax transporter. My fleet is short of a cruiser and transport, and they would fill the gap, seeing as they closely match the Shey Ke and Human Warship.

I've got hundreds of models on my HDD, can you tell me the exact name of what u want converted ? Or better yet, link me the pic for the security vessel so I'd recognize it, cause I probably have it under a different name in my pc.

And there's the transporter:

Hey guys
This time I need some feedback from you about the texture on my latest model, the "wormhole generator". I've got a laptop at work and a pc at home and when I look at this texture from my laptop it all looks ok, the colors are not too bright or not too dark, so overall looks good enough to release the model ........ however when I look at the texture at home on the pc it looks like crap, the green is too bright, the blue also and .... the entire texture looks wrong for that matter. So can you please tell me if the texture looks ok for you so I'd know which computer is the one more close to reality ? I'm not asking if you like the model , just curious if the colors are not too bright for you or if they look ok, aka as it should.
So here's the texture that buggs me:

Personally, while I liek the textures overall, I do't think they'd suffer overmuch if you ran a desaturation over them.

Damn pretty model BTW.

It looks fine SC.... I'm not particularly a fan of green, but that's noting 3 seconds on photoshop can't change

Remade the texture and took your thoughts into consideration: changed the green with a metallic texture, replaced the emblem and made the blue lights more brighter.

Hey, just having a play with the wormhole generator model, it seems that there's a poly missing in the central hub (facing the ring) and the UV's busted in a few other spots, most significantly on the four main points on the ring, facing both in and out. Otherwise, it's really cool. :)

I'm rather interested in this Wormhole generator. There is something about it that catches my eye. One very potential subspace device in FS.

I've love to use it.  I gotta tell ya, I couldn't use it in Cerberus currently. No spot in the campaign to use it effectively. If I were to make a sequel however, which is a long time and a lot of thought away, I would most definately love to get it in there. Maybe to expand the Kasturians?

Anyway, excellent stuff SolCommand. Keep it up! Can't wait till see your upcoming outposts.

[EDIT]Yep, no worries. Looks like my (very old) copy of deep exploration didn't like it, and neither did my (equally old) copy of lithunwrap, while newer version of Max and TS showed it ok, so I suspect the problem's purely on my end.

Can I maybe suggest you make some warships or capital ships of some sort? I love the range of things you've been coming up with lately, they are all top notch and superb. But I'm really keen on seeing some more mobile war machines in your style. Maybe something like this:

But anyway, I would definately pick that fighter if I were designing an earth-based faction.

Sure I can make capital ships, it's just that lately I felt there's a need for more civilian-looking ships cause the internet is full of free warship models but really lacks in the civilian / non-combat models and I've always been the the type of player that likes exploring and stuff, combat comes second.
At the rate I'm doing models you can bet i'll do some warships also, just not that many.

Sol first let me say THANK YOU for posting these! I just got a look through your finished and unfinished works, and man these are quality stuff.

I'm not a fan of "caution" striping and hole vents though, so would you mind if I eventually try a few retextures? Also I am big on "chop shopping " for kitbash efforts. (credits maintained ect)

[My Trek experiments into FS2 are "Infam"... Er, I mean noted by both communities.]

(IE) An old hull merged with a new saucer section gives rebirth to an ancient Klingon Academy design: Federation Battleship YAMATO!!! (I claim it's also a super carrier)

Hey guys

Sorry for being so quiet lately but I've been working on a game called "Miner Wars" (http://"http://www.minerwars.com/?aid=211"). Speaking of which I'm looking for some 3D artists (I know there's a fair bunch here) that would like to contribute to the game with original spaceship models, atm there's a need for new motherships. Miner Wars is a space combat sim featuring a destructible environment and is a combination of single player story  game and MMO.  It is currently not far from releasing a playable beta.
If you're interested in this and would like to know more pls check their website (http://"http://www.minerwars.com/?aid=211").

You can also watch some vids on youtube to see the current state of development:

Thanks

Whoa, is that what I think it is?

Scroll down to the "Viper Dropship" on the linked page above, then look at this:

If the devs are going to charge money for this product, they better have a damn good excuse for using that asset, which for all I know was simply extracted from DropTeam...

Lol, those are from a ship pack available on some 3d selling websites. I'm pretty sure your game bought them from there also ;)

Ah, hope so.

If that's not the case, then that's pretty shoddy...

Could you do something atmospheric capable? Something like the modern planes, like the Su-27 or so?  :)

Well it won't be in space, he's trying to use it for his atmospheric fighters mod.
