Title: Windows 7 + mission files
Post by: Fandango on December 13, 2009, 10:06:34 am
Hi, I'm having a problem with windows 7, I'm trying to send a mission to a friend but the mission file does not appear. I can see it in Fred itself but the mission file does not appear in the missions folder when browsing it outside of Fred. Does anyone else here use windows 7 and have the same problem?

I've got Vista, but I think I know what you're talking about.

Vista seems to have "security" features attached to files in the program files, thus preventing you from editing them within the folder the file was originally placed... Unless you're using the proper program, that is.

Try this: when opening FRED2, copy the mission file you want by right click, blah, blah, blah, then, without leaving the "open" window, select your desktop through the "change directory" window. Paste the file to your desktop and close the "open" window. Refresh the desktop if necessary, and you should see your file.

Thanks Thaeris, it was a "security" issue. I've never used vista (upgraded from XP) so wasn't aware of this "feature".

Not a problem.  :D

The worst problem with this "feature," so-to-say, is that it can cause runtime errors if you're contiuously having to move a file about... which you're moving about due to the fact that you're testing your changes to the file in question, and Windoze won't let you modify it directly in the folder itself! Eugh...

This is where my Computer puts the missions (It is a Vista) This is the default folder were Fred2 puts the missions you create. :wtf:

C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Freespace 2\data\missions

Don’t know if this is the same for all computers with vista. :nervous:

Note: you have to have the show hidden folders option checked in organization, folder options , in order to veiw some of these folders

EDIT: I found a much easier way than my previous tip all you have to do is go to C:\program files\Freespace 2\data\missions and find the compatibility button and click it.

And this is why it is usually recommended to put FS2 somewhere that is not C:\Program Files.

babylon5:
The reason we suggest using c:\games\freespace2 is because there are some internal buffers that haven't been sized correctly (and we're STILL finding them 10 years later) that will throw up problems if a directory name is too long.

QFT (and not just for FS2...)
