I really think that would be fun.
I mean, like the battles you see in Star Wars or whatever. It *looks* like they take several days ...
It would also include some interactive objectives, and so on, not just random fighter wings.
Of course not something too complex, i guess that would be hard to make :s
It would be even funner in Multiplayer mode for sure
Since i'm not a FREDer, i just wanted to submit that idea there, maybe someone would be interested in it ?

I'm not sure it would be that fun.

Long arcadey flights and fights are fun, but only to a point. They have to end somewhere.
YS Flight Sim fits this criteria. You might have a "defend the base" mission which takes a good long time and it's not too hard because of YSFS's simple physics, but it needs to end somewhere. Thus, why not do an escort mission or the like? You can have a long mission with a lot of content, but it still ends after a point.

I've played BaseWars in Tachyon, where we had an 18 hour straight match... literally.
Mind you other than me, it wasn't the same people mostly. Some would leave, others would come in
and then the opponent team would gain strength, they'd loose some people, our side would go back up.
That's resource collecting, fighting off enemy pilots, staging base attacks, etc.
Yes it is fun, but it is very tiring.
If the idea is to have a always ongoing battle, you might be better suited to having something like
a mission where you're already well into a battle that already started before you arrived in system.

Since there's a topic on it already...
Try this game. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=66975)

There's something like "in-game joining" implemented to FSO, but it's experimental.
