Whilst taking ship reference renders, I've noticed Max likes to substitute other textures instead of the ones listed for a ship.
The only way I've seen to stop this from happening is to shut down max, or to delete the ships it's happened to and import them again.
Has anyone found a way to fix this without deleting ships or ruining a scene?
Example: A shivan-skinned mentu cruiser.

And I don't even want to hear about that BS from before, the directory this is in is clean, only these two pics in it.

LOL! to be honest, i'd say keep the Shivan Mentu, thats pretty cool looking. As for your problem, i dunno what to tell ya, im clueless.

Try sticking the textures in their own dir.
ie: Have textures for say...the GTD Bastion in the /maps/Bastion/ dir.
That'll force MAX to read from that dir only for that model.

Nuts. It's an idea, I already have all my ships textures separated into catagories, corvetts, cruisers, destroyers. Gotta subdivide them too? Ahh well.

I think max still stores texture names in the old DOs 8 character format.... or possibly just 3d explorations conversion to max does (trying to remember).... which would mean it would ignore the full name, and normally pick the alpahbetic one - and S comes before V ;)

Yeah, shivan skins do seem to overrun the terran and vasudan ones. Mostly vasudan ships though. Saw the odd herc 2 skinned like a mara yesterday...

To be honest, you'd be suprised how well that 'retexturing' works out. I was bored one day so I started replacing textures on the Deimos. I ended up with a Shivan Deimos...and get this. The textures were already aligned PERFECTLY! I didn't have to tweak a thing!

I'm not sure about the newer versions of MAX, but R2.5 still uses 8.3 on alot of formats. I think you can use four letter extentions (ala JPEG instead of JPG) on the models in a scene file...not really sure.
