Yes. Reading and following the advice in the FreeSpace Support FAQ (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.0) would be a mighty fine idea. Especially the tips about generating a debug log. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.msg1180359.html#msg1180359)

Also, when you get an error message, give it to us exactly as the game gave it to you; Just saying "I have an error" is not a good way to start.

Excess bureaucracy has never helped anyone. If he has a problem, he should preferably come and ask any and all questions himself. And provide all the necessary details (the error message, system specs, fs2_open.log and so forth).

People that aren't dedicated fans of the series dont see the reason to bother trying that much. I'm just doing my best to bring more players to TBP.

Many people here would be most glad to try and help, but the process doesn't work so that someone says "I have a problem" and then we snap our fingers and *boom*, the problem's gone. It's not just about us helping them. They have to help us help them. If they can't be arsed to do that, then really, it's their choice and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

When I first tried to start FreeSpace 2 on Win 7 I got some problem from DirectX. He could try to download and install directX manually (it worked that way for me).
I don't think it has anything to do with the shaders, but it can't hurt to make sure that OpenAL is installed.
Also he should download the latest driver for his gaphicscard. Again, not sure if it will help, but it can't hurt either.
If he didn't try that yet, he should try to use the WindowsXP compatibility-mode.

Not knowing more about the problem, that's all the help I can think of though....

It's possible he's using a 3.6.11 build.  Make sure he's using 3.6.10 Final Inferno.  I remember someone (think it was Zacam) giving me a default shader file to include in Zathars but I don't remember if it's in 1.0 or sitting in my build directory waiting for 1.1.

I managed to persuade him to redownload reinstall and send me the error logs \o/ so we're gonna have some hard data to ponder upon sometime soon.
