Or have the new mods been new for about 6 months? With a place this busy (ie. mod wise) that thing should be updateable every month or so. Is the problem the lack of mods, or the lack of admin time? Or has it just been forgotten?
-
do you mean HLP MOD database.
Well if that is the case i guess that Black Ace that handels the MOD section has been busy for a while now
-
Waal, dass wah ev'ry one's on a CAMPAIGN, see? You does some work, you gets some mods, hon.;)
-
Lol! And you should get someone to handle the mods temporarily, while Black Ace is busy...
-
Yes. Get someone to handle mods temp at least. I've submitted a few files and nothing is happening. I'm getting to the point where I might actually have to email it to one of the admin  :D

Can't remember where on HLP I read it, but it said that an active seething modding forum is much better than a static links page. So, go there for all your modding needs. ;)
-
An active forum is all good and well, particularly for new mods, but for old mods, or for a mod that you know the type of but not the name (eg, you want a new cruiser of carrier), a page with a big list of concise, ordered names and descriptions is better than several pages of ambiguous topic titles that you get from a forum search. Plus, the point of my post was to point out that it was static, and it would be a lot better if it wasn't just a static page of links.

Well, Black Ace is back.... kinda. So we gotta whip him a few times to get him back in shape, see? ;)

Ouch... I've been beaten to a pulp... :D
Seriously guys, we know this is an issue... let me explain to you what is happening, because as a faithful community, you deserve to know. About six months ago, Setekh and I, with MUCH help from Cobalt, began a total rework of the MOD database. Instead of being completely text driven, it would include preview pictures for EVERY mod, as well as detailed descriptions, file sizes, author contact info, and other things. As you can imagine, this process was HUGE, and it took us the better part of a month. We ran into every bug known to man, and the process/interface itself is incredibly tedious. Thunder and I, as well as a couple others had to learn the basics of using the MySQL language, in order to use the input interface. Overall, it was by far the largest project the HLP staff has ever taken on.
As we spent more and more of our time on the conversion, the current version of the database was never updated. It seemed pointless to update it the old way, just to redo it again when we got to that point. A combination of several major bugs and time consuming activities IRL have limited our progress towards the final product, and for that I appologize.
Here's the bottom line: I leave the decision up to you. We can release the almost finished MOD database right now. There may still be bugs, and errors that we have not caught, since we have not completed a quality assurance phase. Or, you can wait about 1 more month for the complete version. I spent the bulk of my time on the project during last summer, when I didnt have college stuff breathing down my neck. School lets out here exactly 1 month from today, at which time I plan to turn my FULL attention back to HLP and my "TPS" campaign (for those of you who are wondering). My feelings are, you've waited this long, so I would wait for the bug free version. But I am willing to do whatever it takes to please the community as a whole.
So vote away!

Finished version.
-
No! I want the new, COMPLETE, database NOW!! :D
Hehe, okay. Finish the new database... I think we can wait a couple more weeks.
-
Er... why not release the beta version now, and the complete one later? 'S not like there is only one possible copy of whatever it is, and it can be either online or off and uder construction...
And it seems a bit... strange that you'd be putting up a page that is obviously so hard to modify and keep updated, this being a productive and non-dead community, where new models are popping up like children in a minefield playground. :wtf:
If it's really all that hard, perhaps an all-text page that could be updated in about 12 seconds would suffice, mm? A fancy page is no good if it doesn't have what you need.

Making posting scripts = ****ing impossible.
Posting using such scripts = SOOOOOo00o easy.

Good call, Stryke, but this is not the case. Once the script is bug free, it will take about 20 seconds to place a new MOD in the database. The time consuming issue at hand is taking the hundreds of MODs we have, and typing them into the system. Adding one or two here and there is one thing. Adding hundreds of lines of text and pics is another.
Does this make sense? In the end, the script will speed the whole process up, as well as making it searchable, sortable, etc.
It will be sweet...

once it's done :p

I told you, get a server with Tomcat installed and I'll get that done in no time... ;)
(I can do it during work, noone will notice... :D)
