Title: Definative FS Soundtrack Project?
Post by: Thaeris on December 22, 2009, 03:18:41 pm
If you got FS2 from GOG.com, you probably downloaded the soundtrack as well. You then noted that the soundtrack was nothing more than the music extracted directly from the game, uncombined, and not terribly appealing to listen to.

...Or you cracked open the VPs to get the music. The result was then still the same...

Fortunately because of the efforts of Nix, we have most of the high-quality versions of the music from FreeSpace and FreeSpace 2... As well as many extras. What I would like to suggest is a community project to properly compile the pieces into coherent tracks. Anyone can do this with a free program like Audacity - I'm doing this right now, actually. However, I ask for collaboration as I'd like to think that by having several more experienced people than just myself working on this we could compile the tracks in such a manner that they'd sound as close to perfect as possible when compiled. After we're done, we can then simply upload the results to FSmods in .mp3 format. That way, everyone can have access to this music.

...And you'd never have to ask for a properly compiled set of the soundtrack with someone just telling you, "do it yourself" again. Ever.  :D

That said, is there anyone on the board who'd be willing to help with this?

Blackhole is the community audio master. But I dunno how busy he is. . . .

This has already done, albeit possibly not with the high-quality tracks.  I can't be assed to track it down at the moment, though. :p

I have them (both the FS1 and FS2 mixes), but I can't be arsed to upload them. :p

If you're going to go through all the trouble, at least use Flac for final distribution.  People can convert to lossy formats if they want.  Or provide both.

That actually sounds like a pretty good plan. I'd need to track down the codecs for Audacity to convert to .mp3 anyway, so I'll say we use .ogg quality 10 (I'm guessing this is equivalent to FLAC, as there should be no loss in quality - Note that Audacity does not export directly to FLAC) or FLAC directly.

I have a beta version of Joshua I'd like those interested in this project to look over. Last time I worked on it, I felt some of the minor timing issues were a bit off, but I couldn't seem to identify what they were. Apart from that, I'd like to think that in general it's about perfect, but that again is why I'm asking for participation.

I'll have it posted on my Sky Drive in a bit... slow internet causes such delays... The file is close to 10MB.

Ogg Quality 10 is still lossy, so it's not equivalent to FLAC.  Might be indiscernible, but it's not the original data.  If we're going to bother we might as well go the full monty.

I agree, but all I have to work with is Nix's MVmusic pack - I didn't see the FLAC files for the FS2 music anywhere...

By the way, here's my first take on Joshua:

Like I've said, I'm still a little concerned about the timing factor which joins the first two "chapters" of the track - it's that minimal space between which joins the percussion from the first bit and the operatic portion in the second. It's mostly done, but I'd like to see if anyone else can do it better.

That and the "dramatic pause" joining the second and third bits... What's the concensus on that?

Even still, if you're taking compressed audio, and compressing it with a lossy codec again, you'll still lose quality.  The MV Music pack is encoded in vorbis because that's what the game understands, but I think the tracks those were made from are available somewhere, before being encoded in a lossy format.

I got these from Nix's upload. If you know where the master audio files are, please feel free to drop the link in this thread.

I suppose I could make the final copies in .wav format, though rest assured that those files will be massive to the Nth degree. Good quality, though...  :p

Now I can. :D

Somebody mirror them (again), because I'll be taking them down in a day or two.
