Title: Can't get FSO to work
Post by: Vip on December 22, 2009, 05:20:01 pm
Hey all, sorry if this has been answered already, but I couldn't find anything via Search.

I just downloaded the GOG.com version of FS2. I installed it to D:\Games\Freespace 2 and the game works just fine. However, whenever I try to launch the FSO (official 3.6.10), nothing happens. The process is running apparently according to the Task Manager, however the game ain't working. I guess it's because the GOG version doesn't use disks or something, FSO worked just fine today when I tried it on my not-so-legally-obtained-several-years-ago 3-disk version. I've installed FSO manually lots of times and and I haven't encountered such an error until today.

I'm running Windows XP Pro. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, for the love of....

Please look through the FAQ (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.0). Use the instructions found there to generate a debug log. Then post that here.

You don't understand. It won't go past the Launcher; basically the FSO executives, be it normal or debug, won't work. I can't even get a log. And I'm 100% positive it's not the fault of the files, because they work just fine with the 3-disk version.

That's odd. Could we get a screenshot of your FS2 directory?

Sure. (http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/926/fs2folder.jpg)

It's a fresh GOG install with fresh Installer 5.5e, 3.6.10 officials and 3.6.10 mediavps.

Oh hey, you're Polish, aren't you? No, I'm not, by the way. :p

I don't see anything wrong, not at first glance.

Yup, installed. Everything worked fine, I even flew Bearbeating today. Things got messed up when I uninstalled the previous version of FS2 and installed the GOG one instead.

System specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @2,66GHz
GeForce 9800 GT 1GB
2GB RAM

So FS2 works, but not FSO?

Well, FSO DID work with the old FS2 that I had, mediavps, widescreen and what not.

Now, only FS2 works, while the FSO executives won't even run (they're working in the background according to the Task Manager, and my PC slows down by a considerable degree).

Go to features tab in the launcher and under dev tools click run in window and try it again.  Make sure there are no FSO exes running in the background first (reboot would be good).

You could do this the Viking way: burn, pilliage, and rape your computer... ah, just uninstall everything FS2/FSO related and start again. I'd probably do it that way.

Since it's XP, I don't see why you should be having any problems...

Just out of curiosity, what method did you use for installing FSO?

I'm guessing that this one's directed at me...

The first time I used Turey's installer - This was for FSO 3.6.9. In general it worked beautifully, but it did have some problems. However, they were never critical issues (namely things like not being able to download Homesick, for example). Thus, I never worried about it. However, in comparison to a manual install where you directly control how things go into the FS2 folder, the automatic install can be a little messy...

...So when I decided to upgrade to FSO 3.6.10 final, I deleted FS2 in entirety to get rid of all the slop. I reinstalled the program from the GOG installer and then learned how to do a manual install. Easy to do in general, and maybe after a few questions I was set in entirety. Manual's the way to go.

Actually no, but thanks for sharing.

I was actually curious about Vip's method, because he's the one with problems currently. But now that I'm more awake, I spotted the mentioning of a manual installation in the first post. Carry on.

Manual, I tried the automatic install only once and decided it wasn't worth the trouble. I've redownloaded the 3.6.10 execs, and now I'm also downloading the GOG FS2 installer; apparently I accidentally deleted it. Never try to fix things at 2am :P

Anyway, I'll try a completely fresh FS2 and FSO install today and see what will happen. In the worst case scenario, I can always find my good old *.iso files and just keep the GOG version as a "clear conscience" thingy.

EDIT: BTW. I just remembered something that was bothering me yesterday. When using the GOG version, is it normal that when I try to run vanilla FS2 it automatically turns on the game, instead of first showing me the retail launcher window ? Because without it, I can't set graphics, joysticks or anything. Just wondering.

A quick googling revealed that FS2.exe is the retail game engine and freespace2.exe is the retail launcher. So, if you run freespace2.exe, you should get to set your options. I really don't think GOG would have changed this feature from the original game.

Yeah, you've paid for the license to the game. Morally speaking, there is nothing wrong with using isos or stuff like that.

OK, so finally figured out what was the problem. Apparently, you have to first do all the settings in the retail FS2 (like detecting video card, setting the 1024x768 resolution, etc.) before trying to launch FSO. Now it all works just fine. Must admit I was surprised that such a small issue could have such an impact on the FSO, though.

Strange, that. Normally, the Launcher should set up all the registry keys the game needs.
*Shrugs* Well, as long as its solved....
