Title: You May Need to Run the Installer Again...but it still doesn't work
Post by: JBK405 on December 22, 2009, 07:45:30 pm
Hello all, greeting from a longtime FS fan but first-time FSOpen user (So I'm a late bloomer, sue me).  I used the automated installer at http://scp.indiegames.us/ with everything selected, and it seemed to go well, but the after-installation report says that several portions did not install properly (Multiplayer Missions, Multiplayer Voice Files, .OGG Cutscenes, FreeSpace 1 Cutscenes and Homesick gave the report of "IMPORTANT NOTE: There was an error while installing this section. You may need to run the Installer again in order to ensure that this section works correctly").  I cursed loudly (Very loudly), but then ran the installer again to fix the problem, and again it seemed to go okay (When it gave me the different options to select, the only available downloads were the ones that did not properly install), but it gave the same error report, with the same issues.  I tested the game and saw that yes, the cutscenes did not work properly, and that is not something I enjoy (What with the very nice cutscenes and all).

How would I go about fixing this?  I've run the installer three or four more times, each time giving the same error report that suggest I re-run the installer, and I'm stumped.  Well, okay, I'm not really stumped, since I suppose it's not fair to claim that when I have not really done much to try to fix the problem, but I am unsure of what to do next.  How wold I get the installer to properly install these files?

You will most likely need to manually find those parts and install them.  The server they are on is probably down.  The installer only looks where they are supposed to be so if someone took them down then it won't find them.

Ah, curses, but that's about what I expected.  If it is a server problem, would simply running the installer again (As the installer itself recommends) once the server is back up work by itself, or would I need to manually download these files from the servers themselves?

Either should work but there is no guarantee that the servers will come back up.  I'd just get those ones manually.

With the latest stable builds of FSO, a manual install is (a.) friggin' easy and (b.) surprisingly fast...

Learn to do a manual install - it's well worth it. In fact...

(a.) Get the FSO/FRED2open executables as well as the launcher. Place them in your main FS2 directory. Getting both the normal executables as well as the debug builds for both regular FSO and Inferno will save you some time, so just do it from the get-go.

(b.) Grab the MediaVPs (which are conveniently placed in their own mod folder - or you place them in their own mod folder  :D) and place the pack, which is, this is important (really, it is...), already in its own folder in the main FS2 directory.

NOTE: For a relatively bare-bones install of FSO, this is literally about all you need to do... Now, to play it, just select the settings you want in the launcher, making sure the proper FSO executable is selected and that the mod selected is the MediaVPs. You anre now free to kill Shivans...

(c.) Additional campaigns are easy to find and choose using your friendly neighborhood FS Wiki. Punch in "Narwhal's Campaign List" and browse about...

(d.) This is all and good, but you still need to know personally what you need to do. Go find the instructions while keeping these guidelines in mind - it's well worth your time.

...And, to anyone else, if you see I've made an error, please pitch in. It's been a while...

For an even more bare-bones installation, skip (b.).

For thorough manual installation instructions, see this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=47640.0). At the top of the thread are links to other methods. Including, but not limited to, Turey's Installer.

I can't help but notice everybody keeps saying "simple" and "easy" when referring to a manual install.  I fear you have all grossly underestimated the ability of users to misunderstand even the most basic of insructions :)

Anyway, you're right, I'll probably have to simply go with a manual install since (Like FUBAR-BDHR pointed out) if these servers are down they're probably not coming back up; I'm new to FSO, but I am aware this is not a company or profitable game and there's no highly-paid technical support to cover for these things.   The linked page (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=47640.0) did have a link to the FS2 cutscenes I was missing, I suppose I'll find the rest of the downloads later.

Thanks

I've hit the same issue.  It looks like I need to find the following 5 items.  I found Homesick, but can't find the first four.  Can anyone point me to some working links?  It looks like http://www.fszmirror.com is down.  Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Multiplayer Missions
Multiplayer Voice Files
.OGG Cutscenes
Freespace 1 Cutscenes
Homesick (found it at http://www.moddb.com/games/freespace-2/downloads/freespace-2-homesick-mod (http://www.moddb.com/games/freespace-2/downloads/freespace-2-homesick-mod)

Congratulations! Your FreeSpace Open install/upgrade has completed! However, there may still be a few more things you have to do. If there is any text below this paragraph, please read it carefully, as it contains important information that you will need to know.

Not sure where these might be available, but unless you plan on playing multiplayer, you don't need these.

Jeff - Thanks a lot.  I'm downloading the cutscenes now.  Honestly, I probably won't ever do multiplayer, so I think I'm all set.  Thanks again!

Thanks from me too! It seems that server is down for longer as I searched for those cutscenes for some time....

So, could one be so kind and upload multiplayer missions and voices to some Rapidshare or other file host as well? I want to play with some my collegues here in Poland ;)

Why use rapidshare when you can use a host that is not crap?

Mission pack: http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.5
Voice pack: http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.7

Niah, thanks. But there are two more problems I think... ^^"

One, where to put those files?

And second... uhm... http://www.freespacemods.net/files/no.jpg

Try these, then: http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.5
http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.7

And the vps need to be put into the base fs2 directory. These are the ONLY optional vps you may put there without me tracking you down to spank you.
