Title: ships i downloaded from freespacemds.net that i dont know how to use.

 :( so got some ships from freespace mods.net and don't know where they go and cant pop up the instructions for some odd reasons any ideas how to use the ships

Unfortunately modding FreeSpace is not a simple task. If you're serious about modding, you might want to refer to the FS Wiki Modding Portal. (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Portal:Modding)
Installing an existing mod basically consists of three steps:

1) Create a mod folder, and put the modded files in the relevant folders. Any packages (.VP) go in the root directory, textures (.PCX or .DDS) go into data/maps, models (.POF) go into data/models, and tables (.TBL, .TBM) go into data/tables.

2) Enable the modded ship in missions. This can be as simple as editing an existing mission (.FS2) in FRED or even Notepad, or as complex as creating a new mission or campaign using the new mod.

3) Launch FreeSpace with the mod enabled. You can do this from the 'Select Mod' button on the launcher. If you have all the files where they belong, and there's no conflicts, you should be able to play with it.

Most mods on FreeSpaceMods.net are designed to be used by mission designers for use in complete campaigns, and it's difficult to just plug in a new ship and expect it to be available in the main campaign. Add to that that everyone who uploads to FreeSpaceMods.net uses a different packaging and release system and you'll quickly have a mess on your hands.

Unless you're really enthusiastic, you might want to download and play completed campaigns that use new mods, such as the FreeSpace Upgrade Project Media VPs, FreeSpace Port, Blue Planet, Procyon Insurgency, or Inferno.

thank you i made my own campaigns and tested it with my uncle which was the co editor for freespace silent threat we made about 5 different type of campaigns and 3 of them are series.

do you know which ones are useable?

also i put the files of the ship in the warzone tables now i cant find whee to enable modded ships? any ideas

I put this topic up to get some help not to be criticise by someone that's thinks he a know it all. Not why i put up topics, trying being mature next time you put stupid comments on others topic.

Dude, calm down. You're the one being immature. Rather than getting aggressive, re-assert your claim with some evidence. We're a reasonable group of people, and we try to keep it that way.

Try not to double/triple post.

All of the things uploaded to FSMods are usable in one way or another. If you can't figure it out you aren't trying hard enough :P There's no mess. I can use everything uploaded there without a problem, guaranteed (ok, bugged meshes aside).

You can find your ships inside FRED. You have to edit missions to use them.

i understand but all i want to know is how to unlock the modded ships in the fred thats all because for some odd reason its not unlocking the ships i put in

meaning i have to enable the moded ships but i need to know where does it say that i check in fred mission specs and other areas but not there.

Then your FRED is not pointing to the right mod directory, or you put the ships in wrong.

well see thats what i thought but when i hit open in fred it goes right to the warzone misson which i have set. but the ships i downloaded wont pop-up for some reason. is there certain ships that will not be useable from freespacemods.net or all of them useable?

Enable the modded ships? Mate, have you followed Jeff Vader's directions? I think they do an admirable job of conveying an appropriate course of action for you. Well, if you want to enable them in FRED, make sure you go into the target line, and then type
(space after .exe)-mediavps,*modfoldernamehere*

From memory, I don't have Freespace on this laptop. Anyone care to help explain?


Okay, they're all usable mate. Make sure

A) All your stuff is in that warzone directory
B) It's in the right place

Double check it too. :)

If the answer is "Yes" to all of the above questions, but it still doesn't work, please run the Debug FRED build (fred2_open_3_6_10d.exe) with the same commandline as the regular one, open the mission, then close the program again. Afterwards, go to <FS2 directory>\data and post the fs2_open.log file found there here.

Tables go into "tables" folder, models go into "models" folder.

no language barrier but i dont speak all that codeing stuff crap only the kind that makes sence on what needs to be done. yes i did that i put the in tbl but still nothing went to put them in models same thing so again does me needing to ask if i editting warzone missions in fred does the ships i put in like the aerofight does need to be in the tbl.

I am quite sorry, but there is a language barrier here. That last post of yours is almost incomprehensible.
And if you had actually done what I told you to do (that is, use FRED to generate a debug log), we could be making some headway in helping you. As it is, without knowing your setup (that is, where you put the data, what data you put in there), we are unable to help you.

So, in order to help you, we will need you to do the following:
1. Generate a debug log, as described above. Post it here.
2. Generate a fully recursive directory listing of your FS2 directory using this tool: http://www.spadixbd.com/freetools/jdirprint.htm
Post that here as well.

Note that you're going to have to learn "all that codeing stuff crap" if you want to do modding. Advanced PC literacy is definitely not optional.

Quoted for emphasis. As I stated this is not an easy undertaking, and having a mastery of language is critical if you're going to be receiving technical support. It takes a lot of time and effort to do this kind of stuff. Don't be like this guy. (http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/p/7505/139826.aspx#139826)

If you want your modding tools to be simple and easy to use, try playing Spore. And if your uncle really WAS the editor for Silent Threat... well, I'd really like to have a chat with him to find out what he was thinking.  :doubt:

Silent Threat is generally frowned upon by us lot as being a slightly sub-par expansion pack for FS1. I don't remember the exact reasons why it's so, but there you go.

At least partially because of the terrible mission design from what I've heard.  To win the last mission, you have to pretty much sit in one place and tape your trigger button down for about half an hour supposedly.

Then there was Exodus where you're suddenly ordered back to Krios (even though you should have probably been there already since it was the beginning of a mission) and are ordered to protect escape pods from a cruiser and several fighters. :yes:

ST was frowned on for the same reason that mech3 Pirates moon was frowned on.  A hurry up and get it on the market feeling.  When this happens (see mech4), the magic is lost.

ha ha i sending all these comments to my uncle to bust on him but the more you guys told me the more i thought your right on about st but let me ask him if he edited missions or tested them i know he work on them but how is my question lol.
