Pardon my ignorance, but I hope all the people at the vBB who sit there and flame all day (reference: idiots), won't come spilling over into hlp. I think now would be a good time to turn on that authorization before registering feature.

No! Good news! the VBB is going down! :)

Our moderators...

All Hail Steak, Shrike, Thunder, Styxx, long list of names

are very good.
They'll kill of any unwarranted n00byness (read: idiocy) before it spreads.

Hmmm...actualy i'm not surprised, after they closed the SW forum i was almost sure the whole VBB would be closed. The VBB was just a flame pit nothing more..No interesting discusions, no friendly atmosphere only bad stuff wel you all know what i'm talking about. On the other side it's a pitty to see it go and on the other end it's good that it go's down.. Now we must hope the flames don't reach HLP.

Since the VBB is closing is there any chance of getting a Fred2 board on this site?
I know that Fred questions can be posted on the modding board but I kinda liked it when they were kept seperate (Since there are Fredders who don`t mod and visa versa).

IIRC there wasn`t much call for a FRED board before cause of the one on the VBB but when that goes I think there will be.
Title: The VBB
Post by: Shrike on April 09, 2002, 05:59:58 pm
Well...... to me it seems like the two go hand in hand.  We might rename the modding forum to be modding and FREDing.
Title: The VBB
Post by: vadar_1 on April 09, 2002, 06:27:01 pm
I thought modding was FREDing all the time. I mean if you read the tutorial and mess around a little bit, well lets just say FREDs not really that hard to learn and use...

It's NOT. They're completely different skill sets. Lumping modding and FREDding together in the same forum makes about as much sense as putting SquadWar and... ummm... anything else together.

Hmmm..... well, I'll talk to Setekh and we'll decide if we want to add a FRED forum or not.

Not so surprised it happened.  It was being spammed like for a good and not much useful stuff has gone across VBB in a while with the exception of the occation thread or post.  It's darn shame though.

Personally I think :V: gave up on FS awhile back.  This is just their way of trying to shut us up.  Of course they can't do anything about HLP or other non-official sites.

Or at least it's not worth their efforts to go after 'fan sites'.

But I would keep an eye on the member count and not be surprised when it starts jumping dramatically.

VBB closed and FSers coming here= :)
Influx of trolls and demise of THQ =  :(

That release schedule is.. is... I wish EA would buy Volition. THEY have good stuff. I mean, look at what Maxis has done with The Sims. FIVE expansion packs, and the game is still going for $50! The moral is, find something good and stick with it.

Idea for moderation: probation period! Maybe a week after you register, you can't post, only lurk. Maybe give them an idea of what the environment is like before they get the opportunity to spam.

No way in hell am I, as an admin, going to condone a waiting period.  When I go to a forum I expect to be able to post right away, and having to wait a week is counterproductive towards gaining new members.  So no.

We thought about it, but GS didn't like the idea, because we'd be directly competing with the Red Faction site here.  You can talk about it unofficially all you want though....

This is so sad, stupid, hopeless that it's not even funny, even I can't find the humor to laugh... :(

I hope that V continues makin' good games, but I believe their story has now been cut, ripped and burned out of the book. And to think I have THQ stocks... :sigh:

Well anyway, I'll go into mourning (perfect, because I wear almost all black anyway) and later maybe design a shrine to the VBB - on the net. (this'll be my latest project)

Later.

Well, as I said over at the VBB, "I was expecting this at some point given THQ's track record; with this latest move, they definitely rank among the worst game publishers I have ever seen."

:p

HLP still stands as the "shining beacon of light" for the Freespace games and community though; FS2 shall live on at a new location. ;)

I have noticed that too. I guess it kind of makes sense; THQ owns Volition now, and they get to make any major decisions; V has no voice in that. :p I'm not sure whether our misfortunes are due to THQ, Volition, or both; who knows what the real situation over there is and who is actually calling the shots...

I'm assuming it's not Vs fault... it's probably the ****-awful THQ Be-nice-to-your-customers division...

(I'm sure if WW was allowed to handle the forums he would... I mean, what else would he do? By the way, where did Nathan go?)

Dude, their support sucked before the merger/aquisition.  Ask Warlock.

And it's the Volition BB.  Not the THQ BB.  If they have to give over everything to THQ, then [V] has truly become nothing more than a THQ cog.

Gotta admit - Shrike has a point about WW, website maintenance (as a dedicated job) shouldn't require 9 to 5 work, and checking the forums takes all of 20 minutes perhaps twice a day if you want to make a thorough job of it? Ah well... nevermind.

This is quite true. Either THQ completely and explicitly controls what Volition can and cannot do, which is very unlikely, or the problem lies within Volition itself. As Warlock said on the VBB, the reason they went into the console market was that games there do not need to be supported in any way after release; they want to just "shove a game out there and forget about it." Based on what I have seen, I have a feeling that both THQ and Volition have these problems.

Exactly, I can quite understand why people over there have gone wild. I'm pretty furious myself, but I see nothing to be gained in venting it out there. There is not much to be lost either, though; banning doesn't mean much when the board is going to be closed in a few days. As for the Squadwar people fighting, most multiplayer communities are much, much worse than that; the reason they do not collapse is because of active moderation, both in the leagues themselves and the forums, which the SW community completely lacked.
Title: The VBB
Post by: Warlock on April 10, 2002, 04:26:31 am
1: Sw was getting the shaft the hard way without any vasiline for over a year before the THQ purchase of :v:

2: Todd, and SEVERAL other "admin" were said to have been hired to be dedicated for web delvelopment.

3: Todd and Nathan both took turns posting to tell us they would restart supportting SW, that was as far as it went...telling us and NEVER doing.

4: They've stated resetting a league takes TWO hours tops, we know clearing a locked match is MUCH less time than this, they just delete it. We LONG ago gave up on requesting a judgment and having the match forfeited to a victor. Now we can't even get them just cleared.

5: We didn't ask for the world, just common support.

6: All the time's they COULD have at least posted info or been a board Admin, notice last night ALL the chances, banning me, slowly cranking up the flood control, deleting posts (yes I count at LEAST 5 posts not threads posts , were deleted,...ALL of this 4 hours AFTER the work day at :v:

I for one will NEVER own another :v: opr THQ product. I'll do what I can to inform others as to the shotty support, Hell even Summoner and RF got nothing RIGHT off the bat.

"Here have one patch and STFU"

This is NOT how you run a PC software company. Someone pointed out the Sims about this. That game is NOT all that, yet they kept making expansions,...FIVE now,..Full game is STILL $50, each add on STILL $30. Why ? Before the game is boring they tos out new add on packs. The site supports the game, they release a few freebie add ons here and there to keep ppl interested.

Anyhow I contacted Computer gaming World last night about all this...could be interesting if they post an article especially after all the years of TRYING to get support and NOTHING .

As for the ppl that folks think are now flaming to flame on the VBB. More like this was a last straw. You can't screw with ppl too much before they slam your head into the mud. I know alot of you single player only ppl will never truely understand, for you the game was fine after the patch. For SW and general onlione ppl, it's been buggy and in need of ALOT since day 1 thou :(

Well off to work...laters

I must say I noticed too that at one point, all turned upside down at the VBB :doubt:

I registered there because it seemed like fun, and I needed some help with my campaign :p
Then at one point people started arguing much more than usual and a swarm of trolls appeared. At first it was fun to read (in some occasions), but it simply got out of hand :(

Lack of support from :v and THQ might have been one reason, I suppose...

Anyway, sad to see her go... final words posted... *bows*

So it has happened. It wouldn't be too sad, but FRED forum was good. And, now, not so many people find HLP at all. I'm not going to get me banned, just posting some links to HLP. ;) About time I joined to HLP, and this is already better than the VBB. But, THQ is... :headz: :snipe:

Edit: Indeed, VBB is slow now. At least it has more new posts and topic than usually. Except lots of them are about that closing.

Edit:  that flood control. Can't post almost anything. 400 seconds.

As good a game as Freespace is, Volition no longer deserves any respect as a gaming house. They simply sold themselves, and gave up on the possibility of making real money for a small, simple, more secure path. If you don't get it, that's what cowards usually do, and that's how I see Volition's managers right now. They'll spiral to the bottom - it already started, their games for the PS2 didn't get close to the popularity they've expected, and they neglected the only market where they were sure to make a top of the line product. Call that a chain of stupid decisions or what?

Anyway, I hope they're reading this. I guess I'll even post it on the VBB before it's definately gone, just to see what happens.

Apparently volition was always the frostier side of Parallax, compared to..er...the other guys.

I dont know the corporate history anyway so..

But you're right abotu concentrating on daft games....but its syptomatic of the general social trends at the moment.   Out with sci-fi and anything relatively interesting and in with sports games or weird puzzle thingies and soap operas :(

But thats' just the way the managers want it run, its all cyclic.  Sooner or later the people with the cash will realise they arent making money anymore because there's no origionality and their games suck (Sci-fi IS origional, i dont care what anyone says)

It will make a comeback in a couple of years, I bet, depending on how many promising companies have to go under due to managerial short-sightedness.

I hate managers, I hate accountants and I hate money.  Rip the system.

I wish one of the V guys would quit or something, so they could get out from under the Order of Silence THQ has apparently imposed. It's bloody weird not hearing from either of the Daves for so long. Heck, I'd almost pay money just to find out what happened to the once-promising Red Faction.

You summed up my thoughts perfectly there. Volition's FS1 support was actually quite good, but ever since the release of FS2's first (and only) patch, everything went downhill. Maybe there was change in their internal structure or something, but whatever the case, the product support beecame worse than any other corporation I have seen out there. A bad developer (or rather, a good developer but a bad supporter) is now teamed up with a bad publisher, making the situation even worse. As it stands now, I am of course not going to buy anything from them either (although "Britney Spears Dance" or whatever isn't exactly worth buying anyway :p); I really have no respect left for either company anymore, nor do they deserve it. As you said, the created a legacy, but they destroyed that legacy. Although it doesn't say anywhere in the official license agreement that they have to support it, when just about every company does a better job than this, "the bar gets raised," as the saying goes.

It would be really good if one of the popular magazines or websites posts an article about this as an example of what can happen to an exceptional game with such poor support. ;)
