Title: Translated versions of FS
Post by: FreeSpaceFreak on December 28, 2009, 10:25:00 am
How to set FS to an other language, and which ones are available? Been looking all through the Wiki and the forums, but the best I could find dated back from 2002 and was... vague at best.
Voice acting is only in English, I guess?

The official localized releases of FS1 and FS2 (like German) include the voice files in the same language. As for other languages, I know that at least an Italian translation is under construction. Ish. The last time I heard, Mobius was having one of his "I don't believe in promotion and status reports" phases so no one really knows how it is coming along.

So it's not possible to just "switch over" from the normal version to another language?

You must have them on your HDD, like in most games' case. From the top of my head, there's English, German and Polish done officially that I know.

Wasn't there a French version as well?

Are these files for download as add-on somewhere, or must they be purchased from GOG?

You should be able to translate the main campaign (and probably any pure text parts of the interface) by extracting Strings.tbl and Tstrings.tbl, translating them and then using them as a mod of sorts. I don't think there's any method to switch languages in-game with a flick of a button, but you should be able to change the language by using different versions of Strings.tbl and Tstrings.tbl.
