Hi,
Hello everyone. First post. Newbie. Just got both FS and FS2 from GOG. Also got a new Joystick and now I'm ready to fly. I searched the forums and the site but couldn't find / understand how to resolve my issue so please bear with me :)
I installed both games, and ran the launcher. Basically all I want is to play them with the latest eye candy and improvments. I'm not interested in MP or additional campaigns. Maybe later.
The launcher worked fine but I got 2 errors:
Starting section: .OGG Cutscenes
Checking: FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp
Current File Size: 0
New File Size: 344
Download Mirror 1 (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/) has failed.
All Download Mirrors have failed.
Done with section: .OGG Cutscenes
Starting section: FreeSpace 1 Cutscenes
Checking: FS1OGGcutscenepack.vp
Current File Size: 0
New File Size: 351
Download Mirror 1 (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/fsport/) has failed.
All Download Mirrors have failed.
So I have a couple of questions:
1. Do I need these files?
2. If so, can I take those files from the original installations? Where to get and where to drop them?
3. How do I launch the games in "Open Freespace" mode?
Thanks for your patience with a clueless guy.
I didn't really understand the "sub" thing. -- Jeff Vader

You don't necessarily need them, but having them is a good thing. Get them here: http://www.freespacemods.net/
Now, to use FS2_Open, you need the FSO Launcher and the FSO exes, both of which the installer should have gotten for you. Start Launcher.exe, select the fs2_open exe by clicking the "Browse" button, make adjustments using the "features" Tab, and select the MediaVPs in the "Mod" tab. Then click run, and enjoy the goodness.

So I can't use the ones from the GOG installation? Where should they go?
-
They should go into data\movies.
You'll need to move them all out of data2 and data3 directories (I think tht's where GoG put them)
-
1. I don't understand the small font thing.
2.I installed both games, and ran the launcher.
...
The launcher worked fine but I got 2 errors:
Could we revise all the meanings for the word "launcher"? In the second case you seem to be using it as a synonym for Turey's Installer, but I'm not completely sure of the first case.
Anyways, the launcher is actually a sort of a tool program that you use. FS1 probably had its own, FS2 has its own (Freespace2.exe) and FSO certainly has its own (Launcher.exe).
3.3. How do I launch the games in "Open Freespace" mode?
FreeSpace Open (FSO in short) is an open source version of the original FS2 game engine. It is used instead of the original FS2 game engine. You cannot and should not attempt to mix FSO and FS1. If you want to play the FS1 main campaign with prettier graphics and such, you'll need FSPort, which you have at least mentioned in the topic.

Also, what's the "moving the retail cutscenes out of the data folders/moving the .ogg files in" thing about? All you need to do as far as I know is put the "FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp" into your main FS2 directory. You should never have to mess around with the retail data in a GOG install...

From what I've heard, the GOG FS2 contains the FS2 cutscenesin .mve format, but they've been wittily placed in either \freespace2\data2\ or \freespace2\data3\ . Or both. Effectively meaning that the FSO engine cannot automatically see them and use them. Yes, using the cutscene pack would be like "place it to \freespace2\", but since marxeil asked
So I can't use the ones from the GOG installation? Where should they go?
, he was responded that he indeed can use those cutscenes.

Sorry, I should have read more before posting. I was mistakenly referring to the installer as launcher and sort of made a mess of everything else.
Anyway, I found the 'FSOpen installation for manly man' and installed everything manually. I did find a few more hairs on my chest so it works :p
I'm still not sure about one thing and I'll try to be clearer this time:
I want to start with the first Freesapce and then continue on to Freespace2. I also want to play it with FSOpen. I installed all of the FSPort files as per the instructions. The only thing missing is the cut scene pack. The link for that is broken. So I'm thinking - I have the original cut scenes so instead of downloading them I'll use the ones I have.
Movie files are located in two places:
C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace\data1\Data\movies
C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace\data2\data\movies
I suppose I should take all of those and place them in:
C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\data\Movies
And the launcher + FSPort will use them from there?
-
A bit of a correction there: Yes, the cutscenes will work there. However, the FSPort cutscenes (i.e. the FS1 cutscenes) rightly belong in ..\FreeeSpace2\FSPort\data\movies (If you have them separately, that is. The FSPort team distributes a cutscene vp that needs to be placed in the FSPort folder)
-
Indeed. Even though theoretically having all the cutscenes in \freespace2\data\movies\ would work, there's the fact that in both games the opening cutscene is called "intro.***", effectively meaning that you could only have either the FS2 opening cutscene or the FS1 opening cutscene in \freespace2\data\movies\ .

Thanks a lot. I suppose this should have been in the FSPort sub forum so again thanks for the Patience.
