Title: Openal Problem
Post by: Renegade on January 03, 2010, 01:26:43 pm
Hello,
Last weekend i visit a friend of mine and  i have installed FSO 3.6.10 Final on his Computer.
then i installed OpenAL.

Then during starting the Game pops up a warning Message: Openal 1.1 or above required.
Ok i am not lazy - de-install OpenAL - reboot - Install. Same Warning box.
After 4 trys i gave up.

OS: Win XP Home with AC97 Sound on board - Nforce chipset.

Any suggestions ??

After this box FSO 3.6.10 Final runs but without any sound.

greeting Peter

There is an old OpenAL library somewheres... you have to search for it and delete it then install the new OpenAL.  If you search you should find which files to remove somewheres in these forums.

nForce drivers often have, especially for onboard sound, their own proprietary openal like solution that may be conflicting and over riding.

The easiest solution would be (after installing the official OpenAL) go to Windows\System32 and copy "OpenAL32.dll" and "wrap_oal.dll" into the root FreeSpace2 directory. That _should_ help.

Alternatively (and a lot more friendlier for your friend) locate the "nvopenal.dll"and/or "ct_oal.dll" and move it/them AND rename it/them somewhere else where it won't load and re-install OpenAL.

jr2: If it was an older version of the Official OpenAL library, it would get over-written with the newer install.
