The decade from 2000-2010 should be remembered as the decade of hysteria. It's been on massive public hysteria after another. First there was Y2K, then the BS government terror alerts of 2002-2003 (anyone remember the fiasco with duct tape and plastic sheeting?), anti-vaxx nonsense, anti-genetic engineering, LHC going to blow up the world predictions (at least one person actually committed suicide because of this a couple years ago), and now the current hysterics on deck are 2012, the anti-vaxx nonsense (still), and the anti-GM scare mongering.
None of these predictions/fears ever panned out, not one. You'd think we'd learn, but so many of us still haven't. Truely a sad start to the 21st century, let's do better.
-
I disagree. People have been hysterical over nonsense like this since the dawn of 'civilization'. Hell, probably before that.
I'd rather this decade be remembered for its anti-consumer policies, or the lack of ethics in journalism. (Although the latter could be argued as being part of the last hundred+ years).

That's true, but not so much in such a short period of time.
-
2000-2010 isn't a decade, it's 11 years. :P
The decade starts with 2001.
-
You know what I meant. :p
-
2001-2010: US proves to world no reason is necessary to walk into a Middle-Eastern country and start shooting people.
No, but really, there's nothing *really* significant that's taken place 2001-2010. I mean, 9/11 is probably the only thing people'll remember of now in about 20-30 years; they probably won't even study the Oil/Second Gulf War in High School anyway.
-
What about Georgia? It's as significant as your precious Iraq war. Just that there's no costly occupation for all eternity.
On happyer terms, there's a nice image on kuvaton about what happened from 1999-2009. Can't link it now cause I'm on a phone.

The decade of the beginning of significant planetary change?
Everything is beginning to increase or decrease in a bigger than normal way, or so it seems. Maybe I was to young in the previous decade to realise...

you should go see a doctor about that :p

2000-2010: the big suck
Lol, pretty much.
Re: Mass scaremongering and retarded things that people believe:
Heh, I remember when comet Hale-Bopp came by and hundreds of people became convinced that an alien ship was in the tail of it. A lot of them committed suicide thinking they'd be reborn with the aliens.
-
Yeah, but now we have scaremongering being disguised as being the rational course of action. Just look at the ridiculous amount of security thingies that have been done to prevent terrorism. Or filesharing.
-
Nearly every generation is conceited enough to think that society/culture/the world(tm) is going to end in their lifetime.
We're not so special either.

The Great White Hankerchief is coming for us all... :shaking:

2000-2010: the big suck
That'd be accurate :)

That wasn't nearly as widespread as this other stuff was. During the run up to Y2K there was a huge run on canned goods and survival gear. Then a few years after that during one of the BS government terror alerts, they had a lot of people across the country convinced that a major chemical or biological terror attack somewhere was imminent. Result? A huge run on duct tape and plastic sheeting (I remember seeing news reports of empty shelves where duct tape used to be).

2000-2010: the big suck
Why not to 2009?
-
We don't want to exclude this year's potential suckiness. :p
-
A) the momentum that the previus decade had can not be reversed in a single year
B) [2000,2010) ?
-
we went from kids growing up on pokemon (my set) to kids growing up on yugioh (next set down) and now there's kids growing up on bakugan.
what the **** is bakugan?
-
little sphere transformer things
-
World would have been so much better if all the kids would have just sticked with the 151 original PĂ´kemon.
But this decade will be remembered for all the un-settled science that we didn't manage to settle or make solutions.
-
At least we didn't beat the 80's in terms of bizarreness.
-
Well, in that light I guess it wasn't all that bad... :p
-
Yeahs. :)
Well, for some stupid, stupid, reason; the chav kids around here are trying to bring the mullet+rat's tail back. ARGH. Here we ****ing go. At least 2011-2020 can be remembered as the "Worse Than The 80's Decade". :P

skinny jeans suck pretty bad

Cannot agree enough.
-
What ever happened to plain, sensible, boring clothing? And a neat haircut. Perhaps I'm the only one...
Let's bring back the '60s NASA look.
-
Yes please. :)
-
Why wear clothes if you're going to wear boring clothes? Geez.
-
But boring clothes are so... easy.
-
Indeed. The vast majority of my day-to-day wardrobe consists of solid-colored sweat/T-shirts and jeans/shorts. Cheap, simple, durable.
-
for my wardrobe i borrow ideas from both johnny cash and einstein. pick a color thats both stealthy and doesnt stain no matter what you spill on it, and get everything in that color so you never have to sort laundry. get cheap jeans that last forever, cheap tshirts that dont. get between 4 and 7 sets of those, top that with a leather jacket and a good pair of shoes. you will find more money in your coffers than you would buying trendy cloths that cost a fortune.
yep the 80s were indeed horrible. everyone listening to something posing as metal, with their hair as volumetric as possible, guh, hippies dressed better than that. im glad they did away with that look ant took up biker attire. at least the thrash death and proto-black metal scenes managed to keep themselves from dressing all girly like the glam rock people, instead dressing like members of motorhead. still, growing up in the 80s was a horrible experience i never want to relive. the 90s were at least tolerable. as for the zeroes, im glad their over.
-
Eh, I wish I could just stock up on plain clothes and never worry about buying anymore clothes again. :P
My wardrobe may/may not borrow heavily from 50 Cent/G-Unit. :D
-
I do admit there are certainly difficulties getting dressed in the morning when I have to color-coordinate with my pink hair. Today I went with the "**** it all" approach and am wearing a green shirt because it is warm despite the way it clashes. :D
But I went through some phase in middle/high school, all black, all boring, all the time. Bluh.
-
^failed goth or rebel emo, you decide
my choice of color is purely out of efficiency.
-
E.g. What's closest when you open your closet in the morning. :P
