Title: atioglxx.dll dousn't work
Post by: Zeller on January 07, 2010, 07:09:44 pm
I have an ATI mobility X1700 card. Fso would crash randomly in game so I read the faq and tried both of the atioglxx.dll files.

When atioglxx.dll (either of them) is in my freespace directory, fso just crashes (I get a "freespace has stopped working" dialog) right on when I press "run" on the launcher. I am using windows 7 64bit

Using 7 you're out of luck. There are no working vista/7 drivers that would support GLSL (shaders) so you won't be getting normal maps to work with that graphics card. The only option is to disable the shaders from the troubleshooting list of features in Launcher. Or you can add -no_glsl to the custom flags field.

How will disabling the shaders influence the game?

As in, you won't get the absolutely maximum graphical pleasure from the game.

To correct you... this is wrong :)

There are working x86/x64 Drivers for Vista that support GLSL. The atioglxx.dll from the 7.1 Catalyst work with it (but i don't know, that it is supported by Win7). But it has a horrible and nearly unplayable performance, though.
But maybe with a stronger CPU (i have a 4 GHz Single-Core) and more RAM (2 GB for me) it is possible to get playable with shaders even on that cards on modern os.

x64 has nothing to do with it. There are WinXP drivers (I'd expect them to work on x64 XP as well though I'm not certain at all) that can get that card to run GLSL shaders via a driver hack, but these versions are so old that they simply don't exist for Vista/7, and XP drivers just won't work for the newer Windows operating systems due to different... well, almost everything, in terms of graphics.
