Google, facing an assault by hackers who sought to penetrate the e-mail accounts of Chinese human rights activists, will stop cooperating with Chinese censorship and consider closing its offices and operations in China altogether, the company said on Tuesday. (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/13/world/asia/13beijing.html?hp)
I can't believe a dominant, publicly-owned corporation is actually doing the right thing over the profitable thing. I'm absolutely stunned. Google, you rock.
-
well.. i cannot say filtering their results so they can operate in the market is the wrong thing, it was just the necessary thing.
unlike Yahoo, they weren't in the habit of handing over human right's activities email credentials.
-
I'm tempted to ask Kara what he hears people saying about it but I'm worried they may take him out.
-
I don't think they can "take out" a foreigner.
-

They did some Brit smuggling drugs, and they told Britain to piss up a rope before hand when they whined about it.
-
That's drug smuggling though. Seems like people might get uppity if a Brit gets took out for talking about China's stupid censorship rules and stuff.
-
Well if you are in China, you have to abide by China's laws. While China may not execute kara, they may declare him persona non grata and kick him out.
-

QFT.
A thousand times yes.
-
Yeah, deporting I can see. but I wouldn't call that taking someone out. :P

Well to be honest I was mostly trying to pull your leg and China of all places has reason to be twitchy about foreigners bearing narcotics. But it was important to note from that example that China has reached a position of world political clout that they can tell the West to piss up a rope. In days past they would have been nervous about ignoring a country like Britain.

Yeah, I spose. It's not like the US would do anything. Our media would probably just hush the whole thing up, even if it was an American.
-
Gotta have those Happy Meal toys, right?
I'm glad to see that Google's experiment of 'limited access is better than no access' has run its course to the inevitable conclusion, and that they're (almost certainly) pulling out. Leave the Chinese to Microsoft and Yahoo, and let Google be not evil.

Nothing in the world is the way it ought to be. It's harsh and cruel...but that's why there's us. Champions! It doesn't matter where we come from, what we've done or suffered, or even if we make a difference! We live as though the world were as it should be, to show it what it can be!
*blink* *cough* *ahem* Whoa, I don't know what came over me there! Continue on. :P

are you nuts, do you really thin fox news is going to just sit quietly while a TRUE RED BLOODIED AMERICAN HERO is molested by EVIL FOREIGN COMMUNISTS? REALLY?

"They" won't.
-
To save Karajorma from paranoia attacks i'm going to gently nudge the flow.
Does this mean google searches won't return results from china?
-
Or the website won't be available at all.

Yes. China is our friend (or owner). The person is question would probably be a human rights activist, and probably a liberal. Fox News would talk about how he deserves it.

1. Google reluctantly cooperates with China.
2. China backstabs Google by trying to hack their systems to get at human rights activists.
3. Google gives China the bird.
Wow, that's cool. I'm interviewing with them today, and this definitely scores them some plus points. :)

seems they tried to get/got more than just that. China is a tech thief on a massive scale. 't ould be nice if they were brought to task over their thievery and what not. I'd gladly forego china-produced crap.
-
Heard that Google is back pedalling, some what, on the pull out.
China also issued a mildly threatening (imo) statement that Google should "reconsider its pullout", or something along that line.
-

Good luck with that, stuff made in China is everywhere.

Got sources for that? You have me curious.

Owner, considering where all the National Debt comes from...

say goodby to some 90% of your electronics components. your mobo may say made in tiwan, but you can bet your balls that all the resistors, diodes, caps, transistors, voltage controllers and whatnot were made in china.

Read it in a local newspaper. I'll try to find a digital version.
-
I also remember seeing somewhere that China called Google's bluff
-
I wish Google says f- you to Twitter. I just noticed a block of the latest twits? displayed near the top of my search results. Like I give a flying frak about some random jackhole's tweeter posting when I'm looking for info on a search engine.

* Ain't it tweets?
Anyway, I doubt that is going to happen. Twitter doesn't have serious problems with the moral thingy.
-
Twitter's out of tweet. It used to be all the rage, but I don't see it being as popular as it used to be half a year ago.
-
* Ain't it tweets?
I prefer to call them twits also.
-
I'm sure there's more than just moral or political issues on that action, I bet they are just wasting money and resources by putting up to China's requirements.

It's pretty clear-cut that basically they made nice to China and China decided to launch cyberwarfare attacks on their infrastructure in return. That's not partnership behavior, and Google is responding to a breach of contract.

hence the use of the verb "would", which differs from the verb "could".
It's like with the lottery: I would like to win it, doesn't mean i could win it.
