Title: The COB2FS2 Converter
Post by: Nebula on April 11, 2002, 09:20:21 am
Ive just downloaded the COB2FS2 coverter and it works well at converting My test model which was just a single sphere into a POF but when i tried a proper model i made, it goes through the dos prompt the same and everything looks to go fine but with my Test model the POF would appear in the C:\ directory but my proper model dosent appear anywere.  Could this be because of the size of my proper model.  could someone help.  Thanx

COB2POF sucks...get Kazan's pof-constructor-suite. If you want to know where it is, look at his profile under the 'members' section.

PCS may not convert some models from what I've seen. But it probably does a better job of what it will convert. Here is how I use Cob2FS2:

1. Make a shortcut to it, wherever it is. (I put it in C:\Windows\Command so I didn't have to add anything to the Path and can run it from anywhere, but don't need to anymore.)
2. Bring up the shortcut's properties and set the Start In: field to a folder you can easily open. (I use C:\Windows\Desktop)
3. Put said shortcut in C:\Windows\SendTo for easy access. :) Just right click a cob file, chose Send To->Cob2FS2. It will appear on your desktop (or wherever) as Test.pof. Before making a new one, rename/move/delete/etc. the old one.

PCS is better though 'cause you can edit stuff in the POF model and do things like choose the "scaling" factor when converting.

There is a version of Cob2Pof out there with a generic Windows shell; I just use that. ;) Same with Cob2FS2.

Now that I didn't know. Did know there is a POF2Cob for Windows, but it's one way. Don't suppose you know an ORF to COB/DXF/etc. converter? And where to get one? D3Edit could be much easier to model in then TS1.) :)

Thanx for your help guys but ive figured it out but there is something else.  Ive got my model into the model veiwer and it looks pritty sweet.  But when i go to put it into FRED2 it crashes, does anyone know why.

i found COB2FS2 quite good at converting i just get the COB2FS2.exe onto the desktop along with my COB Formatted file and just click and drag the COB onto the program, it then goes through the DOS prompt loading the materials and the finnish POF is then placed in the C:\ ready for inserting into freespace.

Probably something wrong with the POF data, missing textures, or a bad ships.tbl entry. We'd need more info then "Fred 2 crashes" to diagnose the problem. :)

Possibly a polycount problem?

What;'s the error message - It should be copied to clipboard IIRC.

I'm not sure, but LithUnwrap ( http://www.geocities.com/lithunwrap )might be able to convert these. I know it can load both pof (FS1/2) and oof (D3) files directly, but I am not sure what formats it can save in.

I just got that program today. Hadn't thought of trying it for this though. It can open OOF format and save in COB format, and might be better at translating files then the oofto3ds program. D3Edit Beta can actually be used as a model editor! You can't really do textures from it though. But it might be useful for some things. (It makes things too big though. Have to resize them before converting them to POFs.)

It comes up with a massage saying Invalid Page Fault and totaly closes FRED2 Down.
