I can't seem to find the nameplate texture for the Orion when using texture replacement. Is there something special about the Orion, or is it just that the texture is not called nameplate?
-
:v: actually used different .pof files for the ships via tables. Still texture replacement should work. The textures are capital01-05a and b. Alternates are capital01a-05 can capital01b-05.

The nameplate texture is, in fact, not called nameplate, and differs a bit from the other nameplates.
Open the mediavps, and locate the Capital01-05 texture. This is the base texture you should use for all Orion nameplates. And, of course, the one you should replace when assigning plates in FRED.
capital01a-05 is the Galatea nameplate, 01b-05 the one for the Bastion.

My fault :( I didn't know what the invisible polygon textured 'Nameplate' was for when I converted the Orion, so it's not there.
-
To be honest, replacing Capital01-05 with a modified image with the text on it makes it look a LOT more like the canon nameplates (which is wonderful)

Thanks , I got it working.
I followed the instructions in the wiki and it does look a lot less like a sticker. It's strange there is a guide specifically for making Orion nameplates, but it doesn't tell you which texture to replace.

The canon nameplates look a lot better than the 'text on a texture' nameplates... they've got the whole painted-on vibe going for them.

There is nothing stopping you from using the same technique for other nameplates.
